I don't know how you could possibly reach the conclusion that they don't care about him or his problems and only use him as a problem-solver. More often than not, what happens is that they don't quite understand his problems. They've lived near humans for centuries, but they haven't actually lived with one before Steven. That doesn't mean they don't care. Gems seem to have a one-track-mind. Steven's humanity is what makes him unique and essential to the team. The entire point of the show is that it's seen from the point of view of the human sidekick whose human point of view is a key element to the team. The show is all about Steven's humanity.
