This is just something DC is accustomed to do (to be fair, I would have to include Marvel and many other companies in here). It hails from back in the Cap Marvel days and Charlton days, this is their way.
They recently did it with the Wildstorm Universe, they now have both Midnighter and Apollo with Batman and Superman in the same universe. Why? There is no good reason. M&A are a direct reinterpretation of B&S, narrative wise it makes no sense having them share a universe, but they earn a little more cash when things are in continuity.
This is coming from a guy who fucking loved the recent Midnighter by the way.
Also, I do have to commend Marvel on not just absorbing Miracleman into continuity, though I'm sure it will come sooner rather than later.
