However, his overconsumption of the sugar implies that Johnny does not like the grown up life, and wishes to return to a simpler time.
His father, startled easily by loud noises due to his disorder, always confronts Johnny about it. Not only is the father someone Johnny takes care of, but he also serves as a limiter on the son. He reminds him that while it is okay to be nostalgic about the past, there are current duties in the present that cannot be neglected.
Johnny momentarily feels guilt, then sucks it up to be a better person for the future, hoping to leave the past where it should be. However, it is inevitable that Johnny, like many people, will always come back to the sugar. They want to forget the duties of the present, and instead have another taste of a time that can never be recaptured.
