I preferred Lin, Tenzin, Varrick, Jinora, and Korra post-season 3 finale.

Bolin was fine by season 4, but he never really had the same arc that Sokka had, going from comic relief to a leader in his own right.
>>
>>82989647
Yeah surprisingly LOK had some views that I would not expect the sequel to ATLA to have. I didn't realize until the end with the party being thrown for a very elite few with the ruins of a city as a backdrop how friendly the show is to the rich.

Mako and Bolin were really the only average people in attendance.
>>
>>82989605
The worst things Su did were scarring Lin's face, though that got her banished from RC, and keeping her son out of prison while his Hitler gf will probably get life sentence.
>>
>>82989460
Varrick at least acknowledged the things he did were wrong and had to go on the journey to fix what he started.

Su just pinned everything on Lin and Kuvira.

Best characters were pre-book 4 Korra, Tenzin, Lin (though I got tired of her angry old lady shtick especially in book 4) and pre-book 4 Jinora. Mako gets an honorary mention.
>>
>>82989460
Varrick
>wants to start a war to make money
>rather than help his own Tribe, he also gives resources to the North
>has his men kidnap Unalaq who Korra rescues but Unalaq uses this towards his stupid plan and puts Korra's dad to death then later changed to prison as Korra kickstarts the civil war
>fucks around in the URN and hires gang members to steal Asami's stuff
>wastes time with Bolin
Book 4
>builds weapons (the energy beam) and modifies the mecha tanks for a military that doesn't need them in the first place as they are bringing order back so far without them
>by gathering all those vines, he's hurting spirits and even back in AtLA that was a bad thing in Aang's eyes
His wedding is the main focus of the end of Book 4 where the people he's hurt or wanted to hurt for profit all smile and sit content while Bolin babbles and wastes time.

Suyin
>scars her sister and says Lin should just get over it since she has already forgiven herself
>puts her mother in a position that (I guess?) makes her feel uncomfortable being Chief - this I'm not sure of since no one else knew what happened so there was no scandal involved
>hangs around pirates and bad guys even after she is asked to leave the URN
>uses Beifong money to create her own city on EK soil and doesn't want to pay the Queen for living there in her own utopia
>tells Korra to go and risk her life and the lives of her friends because
>kills P'li rather than restrain her thereby allowing Zaheer to abandon his humanity and no longer have a personal goal in life thereby allowing him to fly so he can complete his personal goal
4
>isn't good at metalbending as poison was still in Korra adding to her messed up state making recovery time last longer which means Kuvira was uniting longer
>doesn't want any person from her utopia to help her neighbors using her resources
>tells Korra to fight for her and then breaks a truce to try and assassinate the Fuhrer with her children as backup
continued in part 2

He was the only one to really conform to the Avatar TLA standard of being both goofy and serious as the situation called for it. Not to mention was flawed without the writers acting like he wasnt (like they did with Korra: she was flawed, but was written in such a way to be "but not really")

>>82985378
Is the only other character that was any decent and for the same reason.

You look at the characters in TLA and they're flawed. They dont hide their flaws. They are funny and but when the situation calls they can serious.

You look at Korra and they're flawed but the writers keep tripping over themselves to either hide these flaws or make them not count. Its similar to what fanfiction writers do.
>>
>>82989666
He was a magic boxing sports superstar, the protagonist of the first movie franchise and a corporal in earth Hitler's army.

He is also apparently an ordained minister, apparently.

He has accomplished more than anyone here would dream of.

>>uses Beifong money to create her own city on EK soil and doesn't want to pay the Queen for living there in her own utopia

ATLA had a similar problem though, funnily enough Aang is the only main character who isn't royalty or obscenely rich. Even Katara and Sokka are the children of the Chief of the tribe.

It got ridiculous when it turned out that Korra was also a secret Water Tribe princess in addition to being the Avatar.
>>
>>82989917
>secret Water Tribe princess in addition to being the Avatar
As well as the first person to ever tame a Polarbeardog, which she did age 5.
>>
>>82989917
To be fair the south seems to treat the title of chief differently and nobody has referred to Korra as a princess since the end of book 2, but I did think it was really silly that they did end up moving into that big ice palace.

You're right that ATLA had it too but its ending didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth like LOK's did. Probably because there were so many more rich people and they were having a party while the city was in ruins around them.

>wants to help her eldest son get through this heavy time after Kuvira's attacks fail while Kuvira who, she says was like a daughter to her, Su wants Kuvira to pay for all that she's done despite her son playing a part in it all

Su is an attendant at the wedding in the end and needs to go back to building up her city and reputation.
Varrick eats screen time and doesn't pay for it.

Suyin's are more personal than Varrick's grandiose shenanigans. Plus Varrick's voice actor gives a lovable performance being one of the only characters allowed to have fun and laugh to counter Su's bland voice acting. General opinion is Suyin for 4chan.
>>
>>82989863
It's not about being well written.

It's about /co/ wanting to praise him and say what a shame it was that he wasn't the titular character because Bryke would have suddenly written a better narrative.
>>
I think the thing that still bothered me about Suyin was the completely different way she treated her adopted daughter from her other kids.

Baatar Junior helps destroy cities and only apologizes after Kuvira throws him under the bus, but Su welcomes him back with open arms. Yet she doesn't flinch at the idea of having Kuvira killed or imprisoned in the end. Yet no one ever really calls her out on it.
>>
It still makes me rages to this day that they didn't do a 'I'm not worthy to be the avatar I'll an hero so you can get a new more suitable avatar' arc
>>
>>82990062
>Baatar Junior helps destroy cities and only apologizes after Kuvira throws him under the bus, but Su welcomes him back with open arms.
She got that from her mom.

>Yet she doesn't flinch at the idea of having Kuvira killed or imprisoned in the end. Yet no one ever really calls her out on it.
To be fair Su spends most of the book locked up and it's not until the very end that we see her trying to excuse Baatar's actions and at that point everything was so busy and clogged with characters to really focus on it. Assuming the comics will ever not focus on a close up of Asami and Korra's vaginas rubbing against each other it'll probably be brought up because Baatar was literally Kuvira's right hand man, which means we're getting another Beifong family conflict.

The show acknowledges that Varrick is a backstabbing dick and has done horrible stuff, even if it's part of the joke. You are free to love or hate him.
The show is also utterly convinced that Su Jin is some kind of saint despite her blatant, all consuming egoism. I

In universe Varrick did a lot more damage, but the later is worse, because it generates a disconnect between the show and the viewer.
The show shows something disagreeable but tries to paint it in a light that makes it look positive.

This generates something cognitive psychology defines as reactance, which stands for the recipients rejection when they get the feeling that their autonomy of decision is being manipulated.
Same thing happened with Korrasami in S1.
>>
>>82990399
Thank you Mako that was very insightful.
>>
>>82990074
She was thinking that at the end of S1
>>
>>82990399
>Korrsami
Shit, I meant Makorra
To elaborate, if Su Jin being way to full of herself was acknowledged, used for jokes or depicted as a genuine issue that just can't be addressed right now, people would probably be more willing to accept that character flaw.
Likewise people would have received Makorra better if the show had taken a moment to say: "Yeah the way Asami gets the shaft here is pretty messed up and all parties involved feel bad about it, but love isn't always fair."
>>
>>82990712
>Yeah the way Asami gets the shaft here is pretty messed up and all parties involved feel bad about it, but love isn't always fair.
They kinda did this because Mako was visibly upset while he and Asami were breaking up, the problem was how it was framed and because people were too dense to understand it was a breakup.

Like four years later and I still think a majority of the problems with the Krew's writing can be traced back to the decision to keep Asami on board and do nothing to change her character (besides flipping the 'evil' switch to the 'good' one) or her plot in book 1.
>>
>>82990777
The scene in question was staged horribly though.
It seemed like the writing was trying to sweep the issue under the rug quickly instead of addressing it properly.
Mako half-hearteldy mumbled an apology that amounted to: "I'm sorry you feel bad."
The rest of the entire season doesn't show Asami dealing with the aftermath of the break-up once, as if to say: Yeah, don't worry about her.

That was just badly handled, man.
>>
Asami was the only one who wasnt terribly selfish, forced or painfully incompetent. she also suffered the most and was the most likable.
this is coming from someone who hasnt seen season 4
>>
>>82990151
I wouldn't mind some callback to Zaheer and Kuvira as well. If Azula can get some semi-redemption via the comics, I don't see why we couldn't see those two again.
>>
>>82991115
She was still terribly bland, useless and had no real reasons to stick with any of the main characters after book 1.
>>
>>82991205
To be fair, I think almost all the characters in Korra were terrible and bland. Tenzin was alright though.
>>
>>82985164
him, varrick and tenzin
>>
>>82990712
>"Yeah the way Asami gets the shaft here is pretty messed up and all parties involved feel bad about it, but love isn't always fair."
Pretty good summary. I mean, the love triangle felt forced regardless, considering how everyone barely knew each other. But the fact that Asami was just kind of dumped offscreen only exasperated what was unlikable about it.
>>
>>82991115
Asami wasn't anything. She had no flaws, no real personality traits beyond being nice, nothing drive her beyond her company, her plots were consistently handed off to other characters and the second she got one, it was basically resolved within the span of a commercial break and never brought up again until the series finale. Asami exists for three reasons: to drive the Krew around, be sad, and be a love interest.

No Asami fan who has actually been paying attention to how she's been treated should be completely happy with the way things ended for her.

>>82991027
It's because Asami wasn't supposed to still be around at that point and they couldn't be half-assed to change anything about the love triangle.
>>
>>82991292
This. I don't get how people got so excited about Korrasami, because it basically meant Korra being paired off with a walking piece of cardboard.

>It's because Asami wasn't supposed to still be around at that point and they couldn't be half-assed to change anything about the love triangle.

if I didn't know how fucking long it takes to make cartoons I would say that the Asami stuff in Book 1 was rewritten at the very last minute and bryke never bothered to make any revisions to the script other than adding the Hiroshi/Asami fight in the finale.

The Mako/Korra love story turns into a huge mess just because of her being there, she hardly interacts with anyone in the krew and Bryke never knew what the fuck to do with her post-Book 1, not to mention how she wasn't in any of the early promotional stuff or trailers.
>>
>>82991541
Korra should be Fred and Mako Velma
>>
>>82991510
Probably because the big Asami stans are batshit and heavily project onto her to the point where people who aren't familiar with LOK think she's a totally different character.

>>82991541
I think Bryke must either really like Seychelle or Bryan waifus Asami hard (iirc he designed her and was really proud of it because he's never been great at designing women) because that's the only reason I can think of they decided to keep her around.
>>
>>82991681
>Bryan waifus Asami hard (iirc he designed her and was really proud of it because he's never been great at designing women)

Yeah, she was actually the only main character that he designed himself, most of the others were designed by that Ryu guy.
>>

>>82991681
>if I didn't know how fucking long it takes to make cartoons I would say that the Asami stuff in Book 1 was rewritten at the very last minute and bryke never bothered to make any revisions to the script other than adding the Hiroshi/Asami fight in the finale.

Wait this is definitely true because look at how they resolved the conflict between Korra, Mako and Bolin compared to how they handled Asami. There was basically an episode dedicated to Korra making amends for what she did, and Bolin got apologies from both of them that were well written.

It takes Korra six months to actually talk to Asami about it and apologize for what happened. And people thinks this means Korra is abusive towards Asami, or Bryke hates her when it's more like they don't care about her.
>>
>>82991681
>>82991794
Think it was simpler, they probably wanted a gender balanced Krew and didn't want to add a new character.
>>
>>82991794
And even then Asami just looks like Lust, Talia, and Zatanna.
>>
>>82989605
his role in the civil war wasn't really villainous. he saw it was inevitable and schemed to give his people as much of an advantage as possible in the only way his resources and skill set allowed. the fact that he planned to profit off of it wasn't evil because it was all going to go down anyway, so why not make a buck
>>
>>82991832
I don't know, if Bryan gets the chance he usually ends up gushing about Asami and/or Seychelle. Gender balance was probably a factor but not the only one. I think Opal would have made a better final addition to the Krew but she'd have to be introduced in book 2 at the latest.
>>
>>82991962
I always liked the idea of Jinora joining before they turned her into the magical princess of fairies.

I never liked Asami much because of how badly connected she was with the rest of the krew and the other main characters, Varrick played the wealthy industrialist role much better than she did and her fighting style is essentially just cartwheeling and electrocuting nameless non-bender mooks.
>>
>>82992223
Yeah Asami is literally the poster child of wasted potential and now they'll never fix that because the fandom is in love with their own idealized version of her.

It's my personal opinion that Korra should have had a new crew for every season.
Asami's the worst example but Mako and Bolin are also guilty of being completely irrelevant to events outside of Book 1. They keep being forced into random new roles (Cop, Actor, Nazi, Royal babysitter) that aren't natural progressions of their characters, simply to keep them involved. It also means that their personal storylines end up being completely superfluous to whatever real story is going on in that season because they simply weren't designed to operate outside of the Equalist plot line.
They should have just had Korra be a travelling Avatar who forms her crew to tackle whatever event she's dealing with, and then drift off once she's fixed all their lives.
