The novel is said to explore the small area of Northampton where Moore grew up, ranging from his own family’s stories to historical events to fantasy, with chapters told in different voices. The author told the New Statesman that there would be a “Lucia Joyce chapter, which is completely incomprehensible ... all written in a completely invented sub-Joycean text”, while another chapter would be written in the style of a Samuel Beckett play, and a third would be “a noir crime narrative based upon the Northampton pastor James Hervey, whom I believe was the father of the entire Gothic movement”.
He told the BBC that the “middle bit” is “a savage, hallucinating Enid Blyton”, and the Guardian that the last “official chapter” was being written “somewhat in the style of Dos Passos”.

Those Vertigo titles were more or less always DCU. They just didn't directly interact with the world at large a lot. Swamp Thing probably crossover the most at first, Hellblazer did once the series got a bit more settled, and I haven't read Sandman but I've read the JL crossover.
Wildstorm was saving a dead brand, Milestone brings a lot of good heroes in the DCU with little to no real effort.

It's definitely a story about the times, and there's nothing wrong with that, but in the yeats since it's come out we've had dozens and dozens of other stories that have handled its themes and said what it said and did it all just as good if not better.
It was the first real deconstruction of the genre so it deserves respect, but it's not really relevant anymore when cape culture as a whole now is dedicated to deconstructing superheroes.

Doesn't that mean that Watchmen is more relevant than ever? Seeing as how the comics industry has yet to let go of mixing maturity and superheros (rather than making mature works that don't feature men in tights) Watchmen is just as current, at least in my eyes. But then again, this is just how I feel about the issue, so ymmv.
Also, what stories would you say have done Watchmen better than Watchmen? I'm honestly curious.

watchmen's a little different because of its cred. it's built up this holy grail reputation and moore's opinion has only solidified that. add the polarizing reaction to the movie which still divides fans to this day, and the abysmal shitstain that was before watchmen, and you have this sort of universal agreement that it's too sacred to be touched by anyone but moore.
i don't agree with that at all. i think a good writer can make any premise work, but the fact remains that dc would be facing an enormous amount of pressure to make things work, and they probably wouldn't be up to it so they'd just play it safe.
