For me it was when Stickam shut down. There was, for a couple years, a highly active Newgrounds Stickam chat room. I basically spent my middle school and early high school years there exclusively. So many bros, so many memories, all gone forever and never coming back.

Flash was garbage, more garbage than Java.
Eventually Java,GameMaker and Unity took the lead and buried it to hell.
Only some decent actionscript 3 programmers could make Flash work without eating up 5GB of Ram for a few shitty vectors.

Like it has been said, the animators went where the money is: Youtube. And some have even ditched animation for easier and faster to produce videos.
NG just needs to offer a contract to someone and figure how to make money better.
It's weird to see how it went from being the-if not one of- the edgiest things that was on the internet in the early 2000s (that's not a bad thing though), to a pretty tame melting pot of content.
If anything went wrong, it's that so many creators jumped ship somewhere along the line, with a lot of their stuff being left to rot, either unfinished or unexplored.I'm still waiting for Joe Zombie 7, Rob.

According to some bullshit I made up, his first two passions were writing and voice-acting. Drawing and animation only sprung up as a backup plan and now that he's a Lets Player and is essentially just a voice actor, he sees no reason to ever draw again. Especially now that he has Justin Roiland and Rob Schneider to get him gigs.

More like they wanted to actually be able to make a career of what they were doing, man.
The biggest problem was that Newgrounds didn't have the capital to help make this dream come true, so the animators had to go to Youtube to make money. They grew an audience there instead of Newgrounds so they had to stay, even after Youtube changed the algorithm.
If Newgrounds had somehow made some sort of system to benefit the artists in a better way, they could have not only combated the Youtube animation rise (or be a safe recovery when Youtube screwed everyone over), but they could have fought other sites like DeviantArt for population for a lot longer. Hell, I bet that could have fostered a community to the point where Tumblr wouldn't be the place artists go to post their work.
Only problem was, it didn't get enough money to create such a system in time, and now a combination of Tumblr and Patreon has kind of made the site obsolete, just like DeviantArt.
