in Doctor Strange's book we learn there is something causing issues with the balance of magic in realms, and that spells are not working properly
Strange later discovers that other worlds and dimensions are dying and that magic is being stripped of these worlds along with Sorcerer Supremes from each of these places going missing/dying
This is then revealed to be all part of the plan of some asshole from a world that worships magic instead of science, and has cult like tendencies. This world killed the villains parents as a child and so he has used the science his parents left him to create machines to destroy magic in all known worlds and universes

The one thing I don't get with this event is went only magic users are dealing with it. Empirikul's entire schtick is that they're anti-magic. If Strange just called on Tony or Amadeus, who are both science-powered, Empirikul wouldn't be able to do shit.
