Jesus Christ, its mind-boggling how popular Spidey has managed to stay despite having the absolute worst supporting cast in all of comicdom.
His villains are awful but his friends are even worse.
I can't help but think it was the Spidey Team-Up series that managed to get the character through the character through the 70s. By largely jettisoning his own supporting cast to go hang out in the rest of the Marvel U it helped solidify his popularity while allowing readers to forget what a wasteland his own book was. Just a bunch of loser hangers-on who never got the revamps they needed in the 70s and 80s.
