My guess is that she gets powered by Thanos using the reality gem and Mar-Vell saving her. It's a plausible throwback to her actual origin because we can make the assumption that Thanos already has the reality gem, aka the Aether, based on the Asgardians giving it to the collector after Thor 2.
That is the midway point in the movie before the heroes regroup with their new heavy hitters to fend off Thanos' assault.

That would make Thanos kind of an idiot, because all the events of GotG result from The Collector and Thanos' proxies trying to obtain the stone for them. The Ravagers were going to sell the stone to the Broker, whose buyer was Tivan. Korath was only on Morag to get the stone to give it to Ronan, who had an agreement to give it to Thanos. The rest of the movie basically flows from that conflict. I'm pretty sure that the Collector wants the stones for his own purposes, or those of his other Elders of the Universe.

I actually wrote up a treatment for a different /co/ thread years ago, back before the cast of GotG was even announced. I still have it saved among my various scribblings, for some reason.:

He reports back to the Kree after the events of Avengers to give a more accurate assessment of Earth's defenses. He then receives word that he is to report back to base. With his new data, his superiors have decided that Earth can be conquered. Mar-Vell has mixed feelings about this, as he has come to like humans.
>Captain Carol Danvers is a SHIELD pilot who is friends with Mar-Vell's cover, and they both have an interest in each other. She's competent and skilled, and has been working to qualify for SHIELD's new project to build rudimentary spacecraft.
>Mar-Vell delays leaving. He doesn't want the invasion to happen. His superior officer, Yon-Rogg, comes to Earth to see what the problem is. Start off the movie with a team of people aboard the Nasa/Stark space station codenamed Flight Alpha Observatory. Carol is the commander of the station, and working under her is none other than Karla Sofen. The soul gem is used to clear out the station when Thanos arrives, gives Carol her powers, and sets up Moonstone for her solo movie.

The thing is, she's going to be in the first Infinity War, which is before her movie. Going with and introducing Mar-Vell plus the thought-becomes-reality maguffin weapon is pushing it in then timeframe of the movie.
Starting off the movie by having Thanos or someone else use the Soul Gem, aka a reality warping maguffin, is a good compromise that would also set the tone of the movie. There's a battle on a Space Station with some kree and Carol and her crew, Thanos shows up and blasts the station with his Soul Gem, Carols DNA gets mixed up with kree DNA, and comes to terms with her abilities as the movie progresses against Thanos.

My guess is that the first IW won't feature the avengers that much, and will be more focused on Thanos, establishing who he is, where he's from, what he wants, and why. It'll probably have shades of Thanos Quest, with him chasing around after the different Infinity Gems.
It'll also probably be more cosmic oriented and less Earth oriented. I'd be that we'll basically follow Thanos as well as a few different cosmic heroes trying to stop him. One of those heroes, presumably, will be Captain Marvel. Now, that could mean we get her full origin in that movie, but it might not. She might start the movie as Captain Marvel, and we learn more about her backstory in her solo movie.
Alternatively, Carol is in the movie, but not as Captain Marvel. Instead, MAr-Vell is in the movie as Thanos' main opponent, but he meets Carol, dies, and passes his power on to her by the end of the film, and then the Captain Marvel movie is a sort of intermediary movie, about Carol growing into the role and possibly continuing to battle Thanos.

1. The Chitauri all had a neural link to the mother ship so the Scepter could control them directly, and when that blew up, they all collased.
2. They were never established to have shape-shifting powers in this continuity, they just used the name "chitauri" because it's the name of a group of aliens the Ultimates fought, and they wanted to mix the Ultimates origin with The Avengers origin.
3. The Chitauri aren't really linked to Carol's history in any significant way.

The Infinity Wars movies are going to involve the Cosmic stuff and the earth stuff bridging. I'm just guessing that they won't do that all at once, and the first movie will be more cosmic than Earth. We'll see.
Captain Marvel's movie though, yeah, that definitely needs to not just be another Cosmic story. Carol works best as a character who straddles the divide between Cosmic and Earth based stories, and her movie should be all about her being torn between those two.

The natural role of a movie that bridges the space elements and Earth would be an alien invasion movie. Now, normally, this would be a problem for a solo film, because the Avengers would stop it, but we don't know how Avengers 3.1 ends. They could be off-planet, out of fighting form, or captured by Thanos by the end of that movie, or all three, leaving Carol the defender of Earth. Defender from what is a good question, but I think a possible route is that Thanos has manipulated himself into a position of conquest over or shadow-control of the Kree Empire, and has sent them against the defenseless Earth, or so he thinks, and Carol's movie deals with that threat.

Captain Marvel's a very "of two worlds" legacy. It's cosmically leaning but not fully cosmic, because the title bearer is always Earth-based and oftentimes committed to protecting Earth specifically. In the case of Marv & Varr, this meant becoming a traitor among their own species, to Carol it means having to balance the impulses of two separate genomes warring inside of her, and Genis & Phylla were literally hybrids without pasts to call their own.It's all rather tragic.

I'd like to see her fight Hulk in this movie. And if the trailer has a 'Spidey with Cap's shield'- style money shot involving Carol beating the shit out of Hulk, mainstreamers will come in droves.

I'd like to see MCU Carol retain some of her original comics personality.
You know - arrogant, bloodthirsty, pro-government, alcoholic. She'd probably be the one playing Devil's Advocate for SHIELD after the events of Winter Soldier. Even though this makes her disliked, she's one of the best soldiers around, so the government keeps her in their ranks, at a level so high that nobody has to deal with her.
Anyway, Mar-vell lands on Earth, and Carol is ordered to stay around him, partially to keep him safe and partially to get her out of Washington's hair. It's revealed that Mar-vell is a Kree spy and the two go on an adventure, but along the way Mar-vell's selflessness sparks something in Carol.
Eventually, she obtains his powers and decides to lower her rank to that of a common soldier, pledging to try and become a person worthy of her powers. To this end, she makes her first actual friend - her coworker, Monica Rambeau. Jessica Drew can appear in the sequel.
And for brownie points, Carol's introduction scene could be her setting a world record swimming lap, in a Ms. Marvel-inspired swimsuit, on the International Space Station.
