It's the whole blank robotic inhuman aspect of it, the unblinking deep one eyes, the sociopathic culture in genral.
That's what made the dynamic in the movie so uniwue, they weren't inherently evil, they were like children not understanding why playing too rough with an animal is wrong, but on a large and scary scale. That and the fact that they do show logic and kindness and civility on occasion actually makes it worse because you don't know what these aliens are thinking behind those red eyes. It's like,uncanny valley.
I get the comic might be going for a different angle but that side of it definitely gets lost.

I love this movie, it's one my favourites movie, both animated and in general. The 70's music, the atmosphere and an English dub, while not the best, adds to the surreal quality of it. Even the creepiness of the Draggs I enjoyed and admired. >>82916604 is one of my favourite scenes even if I can't explain going on, I don't want to. This is the sort of a a film that takes you on a ride, leaving you different person then when it found you, Any explanation would ruin that experience.
