Isn't the only thing you need to have a republic is a President as opposed to a King.

It's actually really odd how no mainstream tv show really made fun of Obama in these 8 years, even Clinton had jokes made at his expense before the whole sex scandal came out.

Clinton was easier to lampoon. Granted, Obama was also easy to make fun of but it was tricky making jokes about him that didn't also involve his race, so even people who weren't worshiping him were trying to avoid it because it was so easy to have a joke backfire.

The thing with Obama is that the Republicans railed hard on him so the liberals and TV chose to defend and rally behind him.

There's stuff making fun of him but it's just not as much as presidents past.

Also since his election the bipartisan stuff has devolved really badly into team sports so while in the past it was cool to mock Clinton, or Bush, or whoever no matter what side you were on now it's like sacrilege to mock part of your side. It's kind of upsetting really.

Eh, Obama got some good gags in at the last Correspondents thing with Hillary and Bernie.

I think the real issue is that Obama is just consistently professional and is highly articulate and socially savvy, and what would be his biggest eccentricities are fairly benign or never really played up. I mean, he's a fucking sci-fi and comic book nerd but geek chic is in and he's a cool black guy so nobody really cares.

While during the Bush years the Onion had shittons of fodder, while Obama was in office they instead had to resort to the wacky antics of a sleazy Joe Biden and an overzealous fitness-obsessed First Lady, and lately violent conquering warlord Hillary.

Nobody besides Trump in the last few years really presented anything worth making jokes about, besides maybe local stuff. Nobody gives a shit about congressional leaders. Who even remembers anything about the 2012 election?
>>
>>82908689
Probably because comics would be made illegal because 'not Mormon enough' and Romney's wife would have read Wertham.

The Michelle hate was mostly on the side that thinks Sarah Palin has good ideas. Not even conservatives in general, but a particular set of them. Since Obama's initiatives were super benign in the long run, people could only really hate them on the principle of disliking being told how to raise their children.

Three First Ladies with Post-grad degrees, and are also the youngest/most recent First Ladies, since they'd be the ones whose generations were actually encouraged to pursue higher education degrees and careers.

>Laura Bush
>Master's Degree in Library Science

>Hillary Clinton
>Juris Doctor from Yale

>Michelle Obama
>Juris Doctor from Harvard

So in terms of time devoted to education, or level of degree, she and Hillary are on par.

But that's not really what's in question, in its totality. I can't imagine anyone in their right mind saying that he's a bad person. The hate and dislike that exists for him isn't really about him, per se.

Nope, you can do president jokes. Like him getting the best of everyone, or being just as amazing and capable as a hero, but seeing legislation as more important.

But if you do bad things you're a bad person. Maybe it'd be a simplistic way of thinking what with them being President and everything that they HAVE to do shitty things. Plus they could read their amiable personality as phony.

But he hasn't done bad things. I guess he might enable people to do bad things, but he mostly just gives speeches and signs things. And the bad things he enables are things that most people either agreed with at one time (without his name on it) or that he has very little ability to stay.

I'll be simplistic too: I think most of the hate for him is rooted in racism. Maybe not directly cause by it, or even bigotry towards him. Like, "Why don't we just bomb the shit out of Iran and Syria?"? A kind of racism that devalues foreign life. Doesn't even involve Obama himself but manages to wrap him up in the blame anyway.

Hillary's reaction to everything is smiling broadly, even to gruesome deaths.

Obama was just some guy with policies, there might have been a lot of hype at the beginning but beyond that his persona wasn't used as a substitute for politics and (mostly) everyone judges him based on whether they like his policies or not because he's just plainly professional about being the president and that's most of what he's got.

Pretty sure Obama was also running on healthcare reform back in 2008, along with promises to stabilize the economy.

And like you mentioned, a lot of Sander's policies are about as realistic as Trump's (his tariff propositions against China, making Mexico pay for a wall, etc). It seems (anecdotally) that a lot of their supporters even recognize this, and admit they're smitten by the idealism behind their promises.

Mm, no. A trump presidency would be a nightmare, but there is a real fear that an establishment candidate won't do anything to stop the middle class' slide into poverty that's been happening for the last 4 decades. It's just funny because poor white people are just now realizing what everyone else has known for years, but they did an exact 180 from what everyone who has been battling to stop it has been doing. It's very American to think that you can just pop a Trump pill and have everything go away, as opposed to implementing, slowly, the Sanders exercise regime.

The greatest lie in this election is that Bernie is some kind of Messiah. He's been pushing for his policies for as long as wages have been stagnant for middle class Americans, and it will probably take as long to implement them responsibly. But we gotta start somewhere.
