let's talk about mediocre webcomics /co/

You know not what mediocre means.

And I know what you want. You'll get nothing from me.
>>
Why has this page gotten so much attention from the same person lately?I'm following the comic now. What more do you want?

I'm confused, this is my first time posting it here. Has someone else been spamming it?

I'm calling it mediocre because while the art is mostly good, the artist doesn't draw humans well, and the storytelling takes a back seat to all of the "look at this race I invented, isn't it cool?" stuff. The constant "dumps" of information (as in the ones that aren't told through the comic, but are just single pages with a bunch of facts on them) interrupt the pacing of the story, and so far I just do not absolutely care about any of the other characters besides that guy that transformed. I don't know anything about them and have zero investment in their well-being.

That being said, it is apparent that the author put a lot of thought into the race they created (things like not being able to pronounce th's with that sort of teeth is a nice touch) so it's down to whether or not they can put as much thought into the rest of their story or worldbuilding.
>>
>>82866232
I mean it's a fetish comic. What do you expect?
>>
>>82866285
If it's a fetish comic then it's doing a great job of not making me aroused at all

I would need to know the worldbuilding that you think is good first, on that bet.
>>
>>82866736
That's a difficult question for me to answer because I've only recently discovered that this is even a thing I enjoy.

I like the thought put behind how the magic works (and how it interacts with characters who negate it) in poppy, and I think the spirit stuff in paranatural is neat but isn't as clearly defined and has more room for bullshit. I find Unsounded's world hard to follow.

Does that help?

God, I hate TG.

but TG never fails to make me profoundly uncomfortable.

>>
>>82875896
ok it was less weird then that.

We just wanted to experiment with making a setting where humans aren't the "most populous, widespread and default" race. Started with humans as non-natives to the Fantasy Setting that show up randomly like demons and other outsiders do in dnd and shit. The original gimmick was that humans get like random powers that don' fit the normal rules of magic but that felt kinda shitty and uncreative.

Now humans are fundamentally unstable from the interdimensional trip. Causing them to tend to accidentally transform into natives/ deliberately transform into natives to avoid rotting away to death in the course of a day depending if you want goofy borderline fetish stuff or grimdark WoDish "humans are now shapshifting vampires hiding in kobold town."

>>
>>82876592
I see

well thats kinda sad
>>
I really want to like this. I like the author's sense of humor. The setting is great. And almost the entire cast is made up of loveable fuck-ups, which is my favorite character archetype.

But the art. Jesus. It's clear that the author's strength is in more graphic, cartoony styles like pic related, but the main comic is all over-rendered muddy shadows that can't decide whether it wants to be realistic or cartoony. It's distracting in a bad way and makes it hard to read.

I can tolerate bad art if the writing is good, especially if the author's self-aware enough to make it work. This is just depressing because it's clear that the author CAN do art well, but she just chooses to make it ugly for no apparent reason.
>>
>>82877047
Constructive criticism - nurture an webcomic creator and sometimes they'll make an effort to genuinely work on and improve their art/writing.

... sometimes.
>>
>>82865701
I think you mean this page.

And it's not the same person. This just happens to be the funniest page in the comic. Also the comic is something new to /co/.
>>
>>82866232
It's actually amazing how well the yinglets are drawn while the humans still look like something out of a 13 year old's 6 page sonic fanfiction.
>>
>>82866382
Real cute, anon. It would help to post both halves of the comic. I mean, usually.
>>
>>82865103
It's cute looking, but I get the impression the author wants to fuck it. I think I prefer when the viewer comes to that conclusion on their own.
>>
>>82877047
She might be rushing her work, and a lot of what she has posted demonstrates she is self taught. There is room for improvement as always, and some of the dialog reads a bit strange. Her latest page is definetly an improvement, if she works on her humans, dialog and a few fundamentals she has the potental to really stand out in a good way.

At any rate, the concept is cute and I will be following this one.
>>
>>82865103
those rat things look cute
>>
>>82878136
Didn't feel that while reading it but after looking at the extras he definitely wants some.

And it's weird that the protagonist hasn't gone to the bathroom or something, how do they even pee?
>>
>>82878691
As long as they keep their desire to fuck it low-key, I can be fine with it. They are pretty cutely drawn, I must say.

>And it's weird that the protagonist hasn't gone to the bathroom or something
Is it? That kind of thing isn't typically addressed in fiction unless it's some kind of punchline or setup.
>>
>>82866232
>That being said, it is apparent that the author put a lot of thought into the race they created

they sure did, not only in the info dumps on the comic itself, but the extras include a yinglet talking to show how they sound and also an animation of how they walk/trot/run

>mediocre webcomics

We haven't talked about Sinfest in a while, what's happening with that these days? I'd imagine Trump + #BLM + campuses controversies has probably been giving Ishida plenty of fuel for the last year or so. I wouldn't know since I dropped the webcomic 3-4 years ago and even though I'm curious about it I don't really feel like giving that website any traffic.

>mfw the last time I visited the website
>>
Bad Adjectives is pretty mediocre
>>
>>82878258
Her "about" page says she's an art graduate.

I'd be 1000x happier if the whole comic was done in the unshaded black-and-white style that the latest page is in. But the lineart pages are only filler for between chapters. She always uses the ugly soft shading for the main story arc.

I do like the comic a lot. It's just baffling to me that someone who went to school for art would purposefully draw their passion project in such an unappealing way, especially since it seems like plain black and white looks better and takes less time. Imo, it's the biggest thing keeping it "mediocre" rather than "good."

But hey, I'm just some nitpicky asshole with too much free time. The author isn't obligated to cater to me.

>>
>>82886738
You'd be disappointed with how little attention psychology gives to fetishes. There's not even a framework to judge them by. Such a site would effectively be a whole new branch of sexuology.

Fetishes are largely unexplored outside of anonymous image boards and autistic teenagers. Normies hear "fetish" and immediately only think of S&M.

There's something I never thought I'd see here.

I also keep continually checking in on Todd Allison & the Petunia Violet despite it not updating in months (right after saying they needed to update quicker), and being an all around just okay comic.
>>
>>82886683
That's the main thing that bugs me about webcomics/webcomic creators. The pacing is always awful. Weekly updates stagger things too much to have impact and anything faster almost always burns artists/writers out.

I don't get how so few realize the fact that official comics come out in, y'know, issues. It'd be like if book were published a page a day.
>>
>>82887148
Pretty much. And psychology has this taboo about sex, strangely enough. It's a very sensitive science, because no matter which way they go, if they go "too far", some politically motivated cunt will start moaning and bitching about it.

So when it comes to fetishes, the only thing they want to look at is parafilia's. Which basically means a fetish that's so strong that people can't get off without it. Which is also something I've never seen an actual example of. As a condition it's so fleetingly rare that it's damn near impossible to do any research on.

Of course, you can do research like "does the smell of cookies make people want to shop more" and stuff like that, but people get skittisch once sex is involved.

It's a real pity, because the mechanisms behind a lot of fetishism have every indicating of being deeply rooted in human psychology. I mean, take anthropomorphism. It's been around since the Stone Age. Sure, people only started fapping to it en masse in recent times, but it's unmistakenly a core concept of the human mind. I have seen absolutely no research about it, or its possible function. I can only give my personal theory, which is that it's likely linked to empathy, and a mechanism that allows us to predict the actions of animals by putting ourselves in their shoes. Which would have been useful to early hunters, because humans hunt with their minds. We're capable of following prey when we've lost track of them by using our cognitive skills. So reasoning some antilope must be thirsty, and will go to a watering hole nearby, requires some way of imagining yourself as the antilope, as it were.

Sucks to be you. You'll never enjoy great once in a blue moon comics like power nap or gone with the blast wave
>>
>>82887366
I don't know, I don't usually bother to keep up on authors outside of what they post on the comic's website.

One assumes, what with her not having any real form of monetization with the comic, that she has a Real Life Job that was getting in the way. I don't know what the circumstances were then, but I know it's gone long stretches without updates before. So one hopes this one will end at some point too.
>>
>>82887379
Seriously, how is that the post that triggers people?

Power Nap really lost me, though. Just couldn't get into it. Gone with the Blastwave is OK. I'll finish reading it one of these days, when I'm in the mood.

But really, it's not weird to expect a webcomic to adhere to some form of regular schedule. The ones that don't quite often end up dying, or simply go nowhere. I'm looking at you, Our Intrepid Crew.

>>
>>82887183
Wouldn't be a problem if independent artists weren't procrastinating little duds that do things last minute and then want instant gratification. If they went into it with a buffer and a plan, the crowd-pleasing regular weekly update cycle could work just fine with the inconsistent creative process. A regular release schedule does not need to imply a regular production time. Some episodes of a weekly cartoon have FAR more time and work put into them.

But that takes discipline.
>>
>>82888067
>But that takes discipline.

No, it takes working in a team. I think you're massively underselling the advantage of having your obligation being to other people in the same room. A webcomic artist? It's essentially just them, their autism, and people who are far away behind an internet connection.

I mean, you showed up for school every day when you were a kid, right? Despite it starting sinfully early and taking up your day with boring shit you only barely remember at the time, let alone now?

Would you have spent the same amount of time on all that crap if someone had just dumped the books in your lap at home and told you to read them?

No, I don't think you would have. not a single kid would. Yet they all do it when you give them the obligation to just sit in a building with a lot of other people and do the same damn thing.

Someone said he thought Unsounded was a bit girly in the last Out of Placers thread. Some butthurt Anon sent part of the comment to Ashley Cope's tumblr, where she responded angrily, and the thread resulting from THAT was the largest Unsounded thread in the history of the board, and consisted mostly of Anons bitterly discussing whether or not it's appropriate to call Unsounded "girly" long after the original Anon got in contact with Ashley and they came to terms with each other.

So, the next time you see the comment "why is this comic so girly?" in an Unsounded thread, you know where it came from.

TLDR
It was just a competitive game the two Gods were playing, using mortals as their proxies

Okay so

Basically the giant green Dragon and the blue Griffon were big nerds playing a nerd game against each other.

They had rules and shit, but in the end it came down to each of them getting avatars that they could fight one another with.

In the final stage of the game, the Griffon was going to use Grape (purple cat), but then changed to King (transformed guy), finally going to Bailey (transformed guy's bitch).

The Dragon went with the psychic dog.

In the end everyone got sick of their shit and the Fox God fucked them both over.

Yup.

This is exactly where I dropped it. I read it, found it cute, and then suddenly PLOT but wait no it's stupid lore self-wankery and none of it really leads anywhere

It suffered, or suffers, I don't know--from the same thing that now haunts Tim Buckley for the rest of the eons. He took a slice of life comic and tried to add drama, and it went from "Kind of mediocre" to outright bad.
