Depends on what exactly you mean, continuity wise they've stayed the same since 2012 when the current stuff started. They do re-number comics after a writer finishes a run though.
>>
I love Valiant comics but it pains me they get so little attention despite being better written than the Big Two and doing the whole diversity pandering better.

They got a bunch of press, I think it's a shame the mini was not to my Valiant standards, the setup was too long and it wasn't very interesting.

But the ongoing is getting publicity, that's good.

What got announced?

>>82857903

I'm behind so I need to pick up some trades of events and get hardcovers for X-O and Bloodshot but nice to see they played the SJW crowd well to give them more of a boost in the public eye.

I don't get it though, Valiant are able to write different ethnicity characters really well without making a big fuss about it but Marvel just uses it as a selling point and are really in your face about the whole thing to the point of being obnoxious yet Valiant are the ones not getting love from the public.

>>
>>82858319
Yeah, they're the kids that Bloodshot broke out of PRS that triggered Harbinger War.
>>
>>82858319
Yep, them. They have more X-Men vibe than Harbinger did.
Harada eventually got Rightclops/Xavier/Magneto vibe, but Harbinger remained bitchy & whiny group.
>>
>>82858331
Start with Harbinger, X-O Manowar and Bloodshot. You'll figure out when to get other titles.

Humor -> Quantum and Woody
Humor/Action -> Archer & Armstrong
Action -> X-O Manowar
Spooky -> Shadowman

The rest of the series fall into place, you'll know when you need to read something else, there's not a lot of overlap.

Valiant's being backed by a chinese media conglomerate that's hoping to expand the brand as far as it can. There's already been publicity for Valiant energy drinks and the the possibility of a Valiant theme park. They're in good hands, they just need to get the attention. Though I question using Faith as a glorified oversexed fat nerd girl to broaden the demographic appeal. I mean Faith is nearly boardering on parody at this point

Van Lente is a better writer in general but I am not sure I am comfortable with someone who isn't Dyrst writing anything Harbinger related.

Not that Roberts is bad; I am just not sure he can the more emotionally weighty stuff needed

Odd strategy for a publisher that has 0.75% of the market share as of April 2016. As leading comics retailer Brian Hibbs observed, the trend among readers is they're moving away from buying "lines" (i.e., interconnected books) and towards self-contained titles—call it blowback from the events Marvel and DC have been foisting on the market.

I don't know how long Valiant can keep expanding like this when the reader growth doesn't seem to be there. It seems like the publisher has a small but stable base of readers, but at this stage, adding more titles on top of the ones they already publish won't lead to more readers—what's more likely to happen is that the completists will just buy more Valiant titles. Good in the short term, but I think risks flooding their market niche with product that outstrips demand.

That said, this is somewhat similar to what BOOM! was doing a few years ago (they were just launching books left and right, whether or not the readers were there), and look at where they are now. The key difference, though, is that BOOM! had a diverse line-up of new standalone titles—superheroes, licensed comics, horror, humor, crime, sci-fi, fantasy—they were bound to make inroads in some relatively underserved segment of the market.

Despite the unique spins on the superhero premise, Valiant is still very superhero-centric, so that means its targeting a market segment that is already pretty saturated by Big Two books. It just doesn't make sense to me. Retailers are fairly conservative when it comes to ordering superhero product. Given a choice between ordering superhero books from an indie publisher or ordering superhero books from Marvel/DC, they're going to go with Marvel/DC almost everytime.
>>
>>82863295
to add:

Maybe Valiant is seeing something with digital sales that we're not privy to (since digital sales data is proprietary) but just speaking from my online experience here, outside of these threads on /co/, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of mainstream buzz around Valiant.

Also, I can't forget the rumors that Valiant supposedly paid off the Harvey Awards committee last year so that they'd get more books nominated than any other publisher(in categories they're not even qualified!), which doesn't help dispel the feeling that things aren't on the up-and-up as far as the management/ownership of the company. Is all this part of a scheme to inflate the value of the company to make it more attractive to investors or outright buyers, perhaps?
>>
>>82863339
>adding more titles on top of the ones they already publish

I do believe they're cancelling some books, their longest running title, X-O for starters, maybe Imperium, and some of them are replacement books (Bloodshot, Divinity)

>Also, I can't forget the rumors that Valiant supposedly paid off the Harvey Awards committee

I've never heard about this, any source?

I absolutely get your point though, as much as I love Valiant, I don't exactly see how they will grow to say a 5% marketshare.
>>
>>82863441
>I've never heard about this, any source?

Here's an article that discusses some of the confusion over the Harvey nominees as it relates to Valiant (and BOOM! and Dark Horse, who also got some questionable nominations):

http://www.comicsbeat.com/harvey-awards-confusion-leads-to-response-from-zdarsky-others/

The rumors were mostly on the fan-side of the discussion... I don't think any of the major comics news outlets actually mentioned them, but you know that's what everybody was thinking. I mean, c'mon, Jen Van Meter getting nominated for "Best New Talent" for her work on Dr. Mirage? When Van Meter has been a comics pro since 1999? (Heck, she was already nominated for an Eisner in 2002!)

Anyway, the Harvey Awards have always been a little iffy as far as their nominations go, so it's not really anything new. I'm not a fan of comics awards in general, but the stuff last year with Valiant did make me sit up and take notice.
>>
>>82863441
Yeah, they're just doing what they've been doing. A few series are or have reaching their natural conclusion points so they're putting out some books to replace them. Not to mention 3 of the books they announced today are minis.

Divinity iii was all but confirmed already, i dont give a shit about faith, renegades is frankly worrying, savage will be shit (everything peter milligan has done for valiant is terrible), Britannia will be average

Dysart is nowhere to be seen, hopefully bloodshot reborn is not being replaced by a mini

Potentially gen zero will be their only good good comic, compare this lineup of titles to valiant next which had imperium, ivar, divinity, delinquents and i think rai
>>
>>82864579

>>
>>82863441
>as much as I love Valiant, I don't exactly see how they will grow to say a 5% marketshare.

I'd say 5% is optimistic, if Valiant continues to identify and market itself as a superhero comic company.

The traditional readership for superhero comics (male, white, ages 16–40) isn't growing (it might even be contracting). It's been this way for several years now. And anybody trying to get a slice of the superhero comics publishing pie has to settle for Marvel/DC's crumbs.

The only growth markets are the non-traditional ones: women, seniors, so-called "minority" markets, preteens, etc. (Fun fact: According a recent study by Kobo, women age 45+ buy and read more ebooks per capita than any other demographic. That's a potentially huge market for digital comics.)

Are those non-traditional markets receptive to superhero comics? Maybe. Marvel/DC seem to believe so, which is why they're doubling down on diversity. Maybe Valiant can break through with a comic like Faith.

Personally though, I think Marvel/DC have poisoned the superhero well, so to speak. They've devalued non-traditional markets for so long that now, those markets will only respond to superhero comics publisher overtures in a limited way. You'll get the occasional success like the new Ms. Marvel, for instance, but otherwise, I think Marvel/DC have yet to overcome the barriers to entry they themselves erected over the past half-century of catering (pandering?) to (mostly white) male teens and adults.

The smarter bet in my opinion is to court those non-traditional markets, not with superhero comics, but with non-superhero comics (a thesis that is supported, I believe, by the current resurgence in manga sales as well as Image Comics' continued growth).
>>
>>82865758
I think what they should sell themselves on is not a shared super hero universe, but I shared universe of varried genres that happen to have superhero characters which is honestly more apt to how they work typically.
>>
Gen Zero sounds neat but I really don't need or want 4 Harbinger ongoings from a company that released 9~ issues a month.

Britannica would be exciting if I hadn't known who the writer was. Looking forward to the rest of the limiteds, though.
>>
>>82861792
What they need to do is create a comic starring a Chinese character and market that to the CHinese market. Rich Johnston seems to think that's what DC is doing with New Super-Man and if it works for them there's absolutely no reason for Valiant not to do so.
>>
>>82862203
I don't really keep up with Valiant stuff. Is Peter still fucked up from his fight with Harada?

If that's what Rich (or DC) genuinely thinks then they might want to brush up on Chinese history and culture. New Superman writer Gene Luen Yang isn't going to write something just to ingratiate the book to mainland China's politics. For one thing, he's Taiwanese-American, a practicing Christian, and his most popular works (the Avatar: The Last Airbender books, American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints) have an undercurrent of being critical of regimes like the the current one in China. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets blacklisted by communist China at some point.

Where the fuck is Dysart? Imperium cancelled now he's not writing Stanchek? Fuck this shit! Valiant's now got me as annoyed as Marvel/DC do.

I only count 3 at this point. Although, I barely count Faith as a Harbinger book since I doubt it really deals in the Psiot corner of the universe.

He's got a project in the works, probably more Harada.

I am so fucking bitter that Kindt and Lemire work at Valiant and not DC right now. Taste my salty tears.
>>
Anyone else excited about most of the books? I mean, they've almost all have atleast a first issue purchase for me.
>>
>>82856633
no, pandering to the cover fags did that. Just like what their doing nowadays.
>>
>>82857098
meh, until they have the cyborg show up and nuke a city, I'm not impressed...
>>
>>82864325
Yes, but they all look much older than the first time around.

All I wanted was more Harbinger by Dysart. Is that too much too ask?
>>
>>82866794
You're right, I thought Imperium was gonna continue but it's absent from the August trades.

Haven't gotten past Book of Death yet so I'm behind in my info

I think he's probably told the story he wants to tell with Peter. I feel like a new writer should have a go.
>>
>>82866988
Yes

>>82866962
Eh, Lemire doesn't do that well in the Big 2, his only good book at Marvel is Moon Knight, and that's because editorial doesn't give a fuck about Moon Knight enough to pull him into events and shit so he has liberty.
>>
>>82867099
Moon knight isn't even that great. It's completely carried by the art.
>>
>>82866988
No. I'm not.
>>
>>82867201
That's your opinion and I respect it. It's totally false though.
>>
>>82856700
Well that's underwhelming.

>It's totally false though.
You're too easily impressed

I mean, I guess I'm less interested in Britiannia after hearing its Milligan and I was never really that interested in a Faith solo. But the two Harbinger books and the other minis are definitely something I want to read.
>>
>>82868212
What the fuck is with some people's Milligan hateboner?
>>
>>82870532
I don't necessarily hate him, he just hasn't done anything I really liked recently.
>>
>>82862203
Kris never really played that big of a role in the series, let alone the original. In the 90's comic, she just served as a catalyst for the birth of Magnus by fucking Torque. Other than that, she was just sort of an avatar for the reader
>>
>>82863339
I know we hate the site of le upboats, but related anecdote to that rumor: /r/comics had to scrap some of its own user-run comic award categories because a Valiantfag tried to rig the votes.

What if Dysart's new book is the Psi Lords book teased in the FCBD issue?
