Name a better newspaper comic.
>>82834129
Peanuts you absolute faggot
>>82834474
Yeesh
C&H is great but I feel like its tremendously overrated, and people have an obnoxious tendency to say they see themselves in Calvin, which just comes across as terribly self-aggrandizing.
>>82834474
Peanuts is good, and you really can't deny it's a pop culture phenomenon, but it's no Calvin and Hobbes.
>>82834129
Peanuts, Prince Valiant, or Dick Tracy
>>82834474
Peanuts isn't funny
>>82834474
>liking peanuts
>calling others faggots
as long as you're already in it, why don't you also defend Garfield or Cathy?
>>82834129
I wanted to say the Far Side, but it's not as consistently funny now that I've grown up.
Still good though.
>>82834842
>>82835109
I liked both of those. So sue me.
>>82835603
I wonder how many people on /co/ had dads who would consistently fuck with them like this.
>>82834129
the bus comes to mind, but it's not even on the same genre so it doesn't really compare. In the end it comes down to a matter of preference between surreal humour and gorgeous art of the bus VS the slice of life humour and gorgeous art of C&H
What is this furry garbage? Take it to /b/
>>82836102
my favorite strip of the bus
Really?
>>82835957
My grandpa fed me crap like that all the time growing up. Even after I got to an age where I knew he was bullshitting me, I still liked to see where his imagination went.
>>82834129
Cathy
Krazy Kat
Peanuts
Pogo
Dick Tracy
Li'l Abner
Popeye
Little Nemo
Prince Valiant
Gasoline Alley
Barnaby
Little Orphan Annie
C&H is just okay, your love for it is performative.
>>82835683
you'll be hearing from my lawyers
Pearls Before Swine
>>82836566
This guy knows what's up.
Judging peanuts by its post 60s output is a shameful display. Don't open your mouth about that shit till you've read a volume of the 50s strips. I don't know that there exists a cartoonist who can express so much with so little.
>>82838765
The other decades aren't bad though.
>>82836566
Pogo is my absolute favorite.
A number of your choices seem a tad questionable however.
>>82836566
I dont get the love for peanuts. It just never seemed to spark for me.
>>82834129
I like FoxTrot.
>>82839996
Its early years were cynical
You're all idiots.
THE PHANTOM.
>>82834842
>Prince Valiant
severely under-rated. Or unknown/forgotten. Hard to tell with newspaper comics these days.
>>82835957
My grandpa made up stuff like that all the time. He was a WW2 vet, and when I asked him what the war was like he told me batshit insane stuff like that he fought Nazi vampires and Japanese werewolves, and that monsters joined the Axis. He also told me that Hitler flew a plane into battle once and it was a special plane that shot Jew-seeking missiles. Since I was, like, 5 or six and still belived the X-Men were real (and thought I might be a mutant at the time) I thought it was the awesomest thing ever. I later found out he joined late in the war and never saw any fighting, just sat around on an island in the Philippines after it was already liberated. Neat story, though
I have nothing to add to this thread.
I just really, Really, reallylike Calvin and Hobbes
>>82840651
The twins are all growed up. I have been away for a while.
>>82840992
So long as you hate Susie.
>>82840792
I don't think it's better than C&H, but by god is it good
>>82834474
peanuts is boring and repetitive.
>>82841140
>hating best girl
>>82834674
Between Calvin and Hobbes the comic is incredibly relatable
Impossible
>>82841446
>>82840935
>Jew seeking missiles
>no one's mentioned Cul de Sac yet
the first comic strip since C&H to give me similar vibes. But like all the best things, it was cut short.
>>82840588
Exploitable!
>>82834674
>and people have an obnoxious tendency to say they see themselves in Calvin,
Shit man it's almost as if most people had a hyper-active imagination that got them in trouble all the time during their childhood or something.
>>82840588
The girls are always hot to me. Dunno why.
>>82834129
There is none.
Krazy Kat and Peanuts are up there right behind it though.
And I really loved The Far Side.
This fucking kid.
Here's a parody of C&H that shows up briefly in an episode of STAS, thought it was pretty funny.
Just felt like sharing
>>82847443
May as well post the rest since we're talking about Newspaper strips in general
>>82847572
Last one
>>82847572
>goof-ball
my sides
>>82847607
jesus that last panel
>>82847572
Wait, so where was McGurk?
I don't get it.
>>82847704
That's the only one that isn't a parody as far as I know, it has to do with the plot of the episode.
That's Mr. Mxyzptlk
>>82834474
>>82840059
Me too.
>>82847798
i don't get this one
>>82847443
>Peanuts parody
>By Broken English
heh
>>82848050
Calvin is that one kid who constantly does stuff the teacher was never trained for.
We know his teacher smokes, drinks antacid straight from the bottle, and is multiply medicated, and it's all implied to be because of Calvin.
>>82848107
I don't get that one
>>82834129
Garfield
>>82847884
i dont understand
>>82847884
>Wait... What's the...
They did it! The absolute mad men!
>>82848168
It has to do with a certain... Loss...
>>82848168
loss
>>82848217
>>82848227
OH LOSS! AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I see it now
>>82834674
I don't see myself in Calvin, but I'll fully admit that Calvin was the kid I wanted to be. Whether that entailed spending a lot of time hiking through the hills and woods, or getting tons of mileage out of big cardboard boxes.
>>82848249
I still don't. Spell it out for me?
>>82848385
You're either very new or have managed to avoid being exposed to one of the most pervasive 4chan memes since 2008
>>82848436
figured it out
Garfield
>>82840741
>baby raccoon
Oh snap
>>82847884
Faggot.
>>82848050
He's heard of other languages having genders for inanimate objects, and saw an opportunity to bug his teacher.
>>82835957
My dad claimed that cows that grazed on hillsides had to be driven around to the other side of the mountain every year or else one side of their legs would grow shorter than thr other.
I fucking believed him too until I was like 12.
>>82847733
Huh, that's actually kind of clever.
>There are people in this very thread who think Peanuts is shit.
Disgusting.
>>82834129
it definitely deserves to be on a top 10 list, if not top 5. whether or not it's outright the best depends on taste
>>82847784
it's been a thing way before anita did it
political radio personalities in the 80s and 90s did it (see rush limbaugh) and even news casters in the 2000s did it
>>82835957
My dad convinced me that fairies lived in the fireplace, and I spent hours on end trying to catch them.
He thought it was fucking hilarious. He still makes fun of me about it to this day.
>>82834129
Sorry, I can't. Nothing can.
Pearls Before Swine and early Bloom County are close faves of mine.
Gentlemen, I offer you...
B. Virtanen.
>Let's have a coffee break
>There is no time for coffee
>We have to have a coffee break! Even the law says...
>Alright alright. I'll get the coffee to drip.
Sorry, its the best pic I could find of this particular strip in such short notice.
>>82845749
How retarded are you?
Calvin is acerbic and critical of flaws in society. People who claim they're like Calvin are the same idiots who call themselves lone wolves or rebels.
>>82835957
My dad and I once used a Regular Show joke to convince my little brother he was stuck in the 70's.
>>82853798
Fingerpori > B. Virtanen
>>82853865
I know Fingerpori is great, but there is too much wordplay for international spread, except for few strips like one where Heimo introduced a foreign visitor his friend Rape.
>>82853899
You do know there are official english translations of shit tons of the strips, right? An entire book of them has been published.
>>82834129
it's disgusting that people are attempting to answer
>>82854059
>it's disgusting that people have differing opinions
Horrifying.
>>82836102
As far as being consistently funny and good art, I'll go with the bus as well.
>>82840059
>tfw the weekly comics are gone
>tfw Denise is gone
>tfw Phoebe and Morton might as well be gone
>>82848050
to annoy her about something that doesn't really matter in english
>>82848050
Other languages, for example, Spanish, have gendered nouns for inanimate objects, but English doesn't. Calvin is just finding a way to annoy his teacher about something that doesn't matter.
>>82847806
>>82847784
Watterson was really ahead of his time
>>82854275
it had a good run
I don't get newspapers anymore so its weird to see it again and see the same teenage characters who constantly made fun of this new 'Blizzard' company and were hyped about this new Jurassic Park movie talking about Star Wars 7 and curved smartphones
>>82836566
This barely scratches the surface but its a step in the right direction. For my money Count Screwloose is the best but I also enjoy pic related
Any that don't rely on the same old repetitive gimmick.
>>82853704
Anon, you- you're a fucking retard.
>>82834129
I remember reading a lot about Watterson's fight for formatting. How he wanted the freedom to mix panels and use a different flow, which resulted in some really visually interesting sunday comics.
Going back and reading them as an adult makes me appreciate the social commentary much more, now that I can understand a lot of the concepts more clearly. It is and probably will always be one of the smarter strips.
Another thing that always got my respect was that it was never "sold out". No Calvin T-Shirts, or Hobbes lunchboxes. It was a strip to be a comic, not to make a marketable product.
There was a lot of things Calvin and Hobbes that I respected, and Watterson's integrity was definitely one of them.
>>82854275
What happened to Denise?
>>82854940
How did people get away with selling all those decals of Calvin pissing on things? Did Watterson ever sue?
>>82836566
What's the big deal with Krazy Kat anyway? I bought a book and couldn't get all the way through it and I love half the strips on your list.
>>82834674
>People have an obnoxious tendency to say they see themselves in Calvin
Gosh, it'd be horrible to find a character to be relatable
>>82853820
I haven't been bitten by a radioactive spider recently, but I'd say I can see some of myself in Spider-Man. Do you know what relatability means, anon?
I love calvin but I have a soft spot for mafalda
>>82836566
>your love for it is performative.
I'm not familiar with this usage
>>82834129
Garfield. He is king of the Sunday Funnies after all.
>>82855280
It means what it sounds like: doing something as a performance, an act that makes you look or feel a certain way. In other words, posing.
>>82834674
I honestly see him more in my little brother
>>82855230
>plata = silver
Who was the dumbass who translated this?
I bet he'd translate dough as "masa" from English to Spanish.
>>82834474
You're just wrong my man.
