The cast had gotten waay too large over the years. And really Ghoulia had become "that smart monster with an answer who speaks up once a movie". And with the new line characters drinking up the remainer screen time anyway. Something really had to change by this point.
Shave things back to homin in on the main three allows for more concerted focus and storytelling potential for the main characters. Of course there has to be support character so I doubt most are really going away.
I would welcome the Apple and Raven styling of branching with characters.
