Black Panther and Wakanda after awhile became an African-American power fantasy (just go to twitter right now and look at the #BlackPantherSoLit tag it's mostly AAs being happy about it).
It's why Hudlin's run was mostly Wakanda is so great, Wakanda is the best, black brotherhood with the other African-American characters, Wakanda dealing with the other inferior African nations and showing them the light, blaah blaaah.

It's not at all unrealistic. Africa right now is a place full of resources. It's an entire continent that has consistently been at war without any concentrated effort to reinforce infrastructure.
East Asia was largely the same for a long time. If there was a theoretical isolationist nation in Africa that could maintain its borders and has access to the most useful metal in the world, Wakanda would definitely exist. It'd be Africa's Japan.

I'm not sure whether or not but you've read "Guns, Germs and Steel" but the African tribes just like the native American tribes and Polynesian Island tribes had many disadvantages than made the prerequisites of building a civilization difficult.
-Lack of available food crops
-The time it took to domesticate proper food crops
-Thus no excess surplus of food to fuel large population
-Lack of herding animals to domesticate
-Thus people could not rely on animal power to work for them
-Harsh environment i.e. Sahara Desert greatly stopped the diffusion of different ideas and inventions.
