It'd be too hard to use Great Ten?
>>
>>82734256
I think Yang said they might show up? Probably just wants to develop things more than only having the same team over and over again. That's kind of the point of telling this sort of story.
>>
>>82734256
They'll be in it apparently.

>>82734218
I want to see Batman China and Batman Japan meet
>>
>>82734256
yes it would those characters do not sell and don't have iconic branding
writer said they might show up though
>>
>>82734218
I would've preferred more focus on Great Ten instead of creating new Batmen and Wonder Women. The general idea for New Super-Man sounds so good.
>>
>>82734218
I like Chinese Wonder Woman's look but Chinese Batman just looks like a slightly bulkier Bat-Man.
>>
>>82734256
China has 4 times the population of the US. I think it's ok for them to have more than just one super team.
>>
>>82734576
Eh hes got a pretty gooky face and chin too
>>
>>82734218
>Fatman
>>
>>82734628
China is also poorer than America and having super heroes is usually a function of development and wealth.
>>
I wonder if they'll be super racist to the black heroes during team ups.
>>
>>82734662
I was mostly referring to his costume.
>>
>>82734256
It would, if you want this to get cancelled before it's time, maybe.
>>
>>82734791
It is ridiculously similar to Bruce's normal attire. I wonder if that'll be brought up at any point.
>>
>>82734218

are the International Batmen still a thing, or did they all quit after Batman INC got disbanded?

Is this an officially licensed Batman, or some cheap Chinese knock-off?
>>
>>82734707

DC has meta-humans, and China has poor environmental protection laws, so them having super-heroes that are due to freak genetic happenstance is way likelier.
>>
>>82734218
>not literally just The Bat-Man of Shanghai
Dropped
>>
>>82734938

he could be?
new costume and shit.

actually, China's kinda big? maybe they have multiple batmen just like the US does?
>>
>>82734218
>>82734256
I agree, the great ten should be the focus here. But I do like the idea of a Batman from China. The batman Inc idea lives on, kinda. I'm still gonna buy this book.
>>
Who thought this was a good idea?

Chinese Superman really?
>>

Not by much and you can bet your ass they pour billions into military projects.

What's the problem with Gene Yang?
>>
>>82737621
I get tying a character to a larger franchise to increase but calling him Super-man and giving him all of Superman's power is just being unimaginative.
>>
>>82737867
I like American Born Chinese, but his writing for Superman was terrible.

That Batman better be an angry overweight, middle-aged chinese guy.
>>

His Superman fight club arc was good. It's the issues that heavily tied into crossover shit that were lacking.

>>
>>82734849

The Chinese are masters at knock-off brands. Hopefully his grapple won't give out at a bad time.
>>
>>82734256
The Great 10 was written by Morrison hating the helll out of China.

It's better to leave that alone for a while.
>>
>>82737653

There's a cheap Chinese knock off of everything else, why not superheroes too?
>>
>>82734218
Wasn't his name Kenji until a minute ago? Did Yang finally realize that he picked a Japanese first name because he's a self-assured American trying to write about a country that's not his home?

>>82734538
Honestly, I'm not sure you'll be seeing the Great Ten much in the future. Like, honestly, they were Morrison's stereotypical ideas for Chinese superheroes, I didn't have a problem with them or think they were in bad stories, but if DC is skewing PC, "Mother of Champions" is just asking for a whole Cracked article about xenophobic superhero ideas.
>>
>>82739188
But Mother of champions is the greatest idea.
>>
>>82739237
It doesn't matter if it's a good idea if it's not the kind of idea they want to be known for having.
>>
>>82738888
Well, in the DCU your superheroes are knockoff Apple Store versions of ours. Either that's brilliantly accurate or offensive stereotyping.

Probably depends on how the actual comic is.
>>
>>82739188
All of this is worth a read but the relevant part
http://www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/04/14/naming-super-man

>There was a problem, of course. Kenji is a common Japanese name and this would probably cause some confusion, at least at first.

>(The “Japanese-ness” of the Romanized version didn’t occur to my mom because, like most overseas Chinese of her background, she never learned Pinyin. In Wade-Giles, 恳记 would be rendered K’en-Chi, which sounds way more “Chinese” to English speakers.)

>But I figured readers would get over it once they realized there was an actual Chinese name underneath. Heck, there's even a popular Taiwanese pop star who goes by Kenji Wu, so it's not unheard of for a Chinese person to be called Kenji.

>Also, it would give me a fun narrative wrinkle to play with. Maybe New Super-Man starts off with a bias against Japanese people and the Pinyin version of his name bugs him to no end. Maybe his friends make fun of it. Maybe he eventually has to team up with a Japanese super hero, someone like Katana or a member of that crazy Japanese super-team that Grant Morrison made up. Maybe they fall in love.

>All of this is just a really long way of saying that you can think long and hard about something and still come to the wrong decision. Or at least I can.
>>
>>82739489
>Here's the blindingly obvious fact that I’d completely lost sight of:

>New Super-Man is not a character in one of my graphic novels. New Super-Man is a DC Comics character. He has an iconic value that the average graphic novel protagonist just doesn't have.

>And he's going into an 80-year-old toy box. Hopefully, my book won’t be the only place where he shows up. Hopefully, other DC Comics writers and artists will want to play with him.

>What would I think if I were a casual comics reader and I encountered an Asian super hero named Kenji Kong as a supporting character in a couple panels of a DC comic, without any context for the name?

>I'd probably assume some non-Asian writer had confused Asian cultures.

>I was only thinking about how I’d make this character and his name work in the particular story I was going to write. I’d missed the forest for the trees.

>I had to change the name.
>>
>>82739489
>Also, it would give me a fun narrative wrinkle to play with. Maybe New Super-Man starts off with a bias against Japanese people and the Pinyin version of his name bugs him to no end. Could work although I would rather no romance in it

>But then, I’ve been going around giving these speeches encouraging people to read and write outside of their comfort zones. How could I turn down this opportunity to go outside of mine?
This is kind of sad people will think he's writing it because he's Chinese instead of because of the exact opisiote.
>>
>>82739489
>I was only thinking about how I’d make this character and his name work in the particular story I was going to write. I’d missed the forest for the trees.

>>
>>82740055
This market is so bad that long plotting is basically dead even for indie creators. The way sales just deteriorate means that there's no incentive to write a long running series.
>>
>>82739845
Are you kidding me?

Accomplished Perfect Physician's whole story is 'the PLAN are monsters. The PRC crushes all political dissidents. Nepal needs to be free.'

Mother of Champions and Immortal Man of Darkness are both commentary on the lack of regard China places on individual lives and how they're a machine that devours is populace for a few select elite.

Celestial Archer is there so he can rail about how modern China has forgotten it's spiritual past and all of its rich cultural history in favor of evil Communism.

Socialist Red Guardsmen then talks about how modern China is a joke because it diverted from the original pure goal of Communism, instead taking the worst parts of capitalism.

The Great Ten is mostly just Morrison ranting about how much China is awful.
>>
>>82740319
They seemed to be at least toeing the party line in the latest batman/superman, so who knows

>regard China places on individual lives
And individuality isnt a value in china. Cooperation is.

>
Socialist Red Guardsmen then talks about how modern China is a joke because it diverted from the original pure goal of Communism, instead taking the worst parts of capitalism.

And that doesnt mean the character has the same connotation in a country where the red book is more important than any religious book.

Just like Captain America represents horrible things like propaganda, american interventionism and american exceptionalism, it doesnt mean you have to interpretate it in just one way. The Great Ten can mean a whole other thing to a chinese,

The female Dr. Light was a pretty big character in Crisis on Infinite Earth (even if she didn't really do anything besides be a bitch) but then nobody really did anything that big if here and she just became "Justice League Tech/Science Guy N.3.476" (apparently the smartest female in the League) or having some active role in leading the japanese version of the League. In the New-52, she was the wife of the original Dr. Light, that was not a rapist as far as we know.

Why American knockoffs? Why not mythology and history based? There's tons of stuff they could use. Journey to the West. Three Kingdoms. The twin brothers with superpowers.

Because these are likely not natural superheroes but rather government created ones. Super-Man is already confirmed to be that at least.

I really like that the Jap heroes are mostly trained to fight giant monsters and aliens, since there's barely any normal crime in japan that is a nice twist. I really want a 52 type book with following different countries in the DC universe:

The super young team in the pacific fighting some giant monsters, El gaucho Adventures in Southern Argentina/Chile fighting Nazis, nightrunner adventures in europe, black adam fighting israel, The red rocket army fighting nuclear monsters, the Great Ten trying to fight ancient demons, Captain Boomerang fighting Emus and being defeated. Yes, and this is what activates the chinese superman's powers.

He was a kryptonian this entire time, living in china, raised by two factory workers reproducing knockoff sonic the hedgehog super nintendo cartridges.

He has just never been fortunate enough to live in a part of China that experienced a day of sunlight visible through the dense smog.

The issue will be about his brief window of two hours where he will gradually grow in power, reach near superman potential, then have it stripped away when the smog rolls back in.

It's funny. This whole concept is ripe for shitposting, but I trust Yang and DC. They geeeeeenerally have a better track record when it comes to legacy/offshoot characters, and the book will likely explore this new guy's character in relation to the public perception of Superman, rather than going "here's your new Superman. TAKE IT, READERS. SWALLOW THAT PILL". So, I'm interested.
