Ive been saying for YEARS that it must be an intolerable in-person quality that she has. Kelly Osbourne comes to mind when I try to compare to an IRL person, she isn't UGLY but it's not hard to imagine why she's been single for so long (that said, I'd be on Kelly like a fat kid on bacon).
I guess it depends on your taste but I guess she's not exactly hideous. She's not some super model and she has quirks but there's far worse in the same series.
I think it really does come down to the fact she's a boring character, but that's more on MacFarlane and his writers really. It was funny the first few times, but then it just started getting weird. And its not a matter of being oversensitive to this stuff or anything, it's just the material over the running joke of putting her down just isn't really funny, and because of that comes across as well...kind of weirdly genuine. But its more that its like this weird joke that keeps persistently being pushed when it wasn't really all that funny to begin with to me.
Then again though I really don't want to try to dissect or reason out the thinking that goes into characterizing anything from this series.
We're talking about the show that killed off Brian for two episodes, simply because they wanted to see how people would react.

Well the episode where Peter went blind revealed that Lois looks horrible without makeup, and other episodes have stated that Meg has relatively poor personal hygiene and rarely wears makeup herself(, so I'm guessing that's what makes people in the show think she's ugly, which I blame on Lois being an awful mother to her and not properly teaching her how to make herself presentable)
