I just started this show last night and finished the episode where Opal is revealed.

It made me cry a lot and I don't know why ;_;
>>
>>82646642
Just that file name makes me not want to believe that you just started this show.
>>

I just grabbed one from google images, I didn't care to change the name.

Are you of the female persuasion? I'm a male and I cry a lot during movies and such, but Steven Universe has never made me shed a tear.
>>
>>82646950
I'm just an emotional person is all. I had to stop watching anime because everything made me cry so easily.

Not sure. I think I'm just a big cry baby.
Or at least my boyfriend sure thinks so

SU is just too girly for me to get into.

The show does a good job of a family dynamic set against all the fantastical and weird shit. Nobody feels too important, it's just a strange family trying to get along while dealing with war-in-heaven style stuff.

>>82648361

That's not a thing. That's something you think because you see the fandom here, the tiny tiny piece of it, and assume it's all waifubait.

I've never understood this. What exactly is this? Do you just want episodes of them doing nothing like a regular day? The reason episodes exist is to show the character development between them or show big events that would go un-noticed otherwise.

It'd be nice if they were able to be Opal more often. In terms of show structure, I'm fine they don't save for brief moments, but I'd like to think they're doing it more often offscreen since they both went through Pearl's recent colossal fuckup.

>>82648561
I think he means the characters hyper emotional responses to things at times bursting into screaming or tears suddenly and with seemingly little provocation.
I think that is more a symptom of the shows compressed run time than a actual trait of the characters though.
When the whole episode's plot has to fit into 11 minutes there isn't much room for illustrating the subtle changes in the characters mood.

I'm sure it's different outside of Jesusland (south east USA), but most parents I'm around (I work at a k-12 tutoring center) think the show is downright evil. Not "DnD is satanic" levels, but 'gay atheist agenda' evil. So they don't let their kids watch it. Even outside of super conservative places, the show probably just looks weird and off putting to anyone swooping in with no context and does not dig the artstyle from the get go (I know I didn't), as you really need to go in blind and from the start to get into it.

>>
>>82652549
The only hot thing about Peridot is her voice.
Not a lot of good Amethyst, Garnet, & Jasper content that are straight.
And not a lot of new content either.
>>
>>82652387
That's true, and what I meant on the second part of my post. I think most kids probably have a hard time getting into it because its not just random humor and bright flash explosions, so they lose patience, or there is just something kinda off-kilter about the show most young-un's pick up on and don't know how to put in context with most other media aimed at them. I would have liked the show as a kid, but that's because I am a weird fuck who watched sailor moon as a tyke and was able to pick up on the fact the 'cousins' were totally into one another.

So at the heart of it, my guess is kid turnout is low because a lot of parents are reducing exposure, and even then, it's not really presented in a way that grasps little kids attention, unless they really resonate with the subject matter.

Oh, and the really shitty Steven Bomb format of doing the episodes probably does NOTHING good for more exposure. If you are a 6-11 year old, and happen to miss the bomb, or can't remember the plot from the months and months since the last one, you are more than likely not going to track it down and watch the episodes on a streamer, even if you are decently internet savy. So you just ignore it.

>>82651734
They still don't have any fuckin' SU tshirts is why.

I don't think CN expected it to be such a breakout hit, and it wasn't based off any older properties, so they've dragged their heels and delayed new episodes until they could churn out swag to sell.

It made you cry because you saw two bickering family members set aside their differences to protect a child that they both held dear. Furthermore, Opal singing "Giant Woman" was a confirmation that Gems not only actively listens to what Steven says/sings/does but also hold these moments close to their light projected hearts. They care, and they love him. And all of that was conveyed in a giant sexy woman singing "All you want to do, is see me turn into..."
That's good writing, Anon. That's some damn good writing.
>>
>>82652798
The mods probably deleted it because it could have applied to any one of the various female members of the cast, and they weren't sure which one--ergo, it was deleted for its vagueness and ambiguity.

Or, it might have been deleted because it was a spoiler nearly as massive as Steven's junk.

It couldn't have been deleted because it was crass and obscene, no sir. It was because of that other jizz that I mentioned.

Giant Woman is the first legitimately great episode of the show.

When Opal's theme hit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akk40fqmLKs), I knew this was the episode where the show started showing its awesome potential. It's the first time they got everything right about the show, apart from Steven being slightly annoying.

No, I didn't get cold feet;, in fact, I was the same guy who made the earlier post about about Steven healing another character with his semen. The mods deleted that one in less than two minutes.

>>
>>82653822
I don't think SU deconstructs Tumblr. I bet Rebecca Sugar and most of the staff loves Tumblr!

The way I look at it, what Sugar is pushing in SU is basically all of tumblrs views on gender and sex and feminism and identity and such, but distilled by a sane person. Sugar just has progressive views while not going off the insane deep end with militant SJW hatred. She believes in loving people not screaming at them on Twitter. So she tries to make her "queer" characters relatable and likable instead of a bunch of mean frumpy translesbians.
>>

>>82654104
That works as well but I've always just seen the show as more pushing of "it's love, these are people, just fucking leave them be or we're going to beat Homeworld's ass". It appeases my boner for Voluntaryism and CLAMP love at the same time.
>>
>>82654073

On the surface it'd look like that, you got a mostly-female cast with a token male. But as the show progresses the token male bails out the gems like a fuckton of the time
>>

>>
>>82654114
I don't think that's what I was suggesting. I meant that it actually appears to endorse feminist beliefs.

>>82654175
>>82654178
It's got a large cast of female characters with ample development for each. None of them slot into lazy "stereotypical female character" roles. The writers treat the female characters with respect. There's no sign of catering to a male audience with female sex appeal, etc. Gender roles are mostly nonexistent. That reads to me as a feminist's dream show. Even if Steven does save the gems regularly, it's not really a gender-based thing.

Just compare SU to, say, an actual harem anime that also has a mostly female cast. One sits well with feminists; the other is anathema.
>>
>>82653762
Its funny cause if you wanted to spin it you could say "the gems have the ability to change every aspect of themselves. These forms however are unnatural and the gems will always revert to the original 'birth' construct"
>>
>>82648782

>>82654357
The show appears to be relatively sex positive for a kid's show

>>
>>82653354

...Oh boy, are you gonna feel bad when that actually happens
>>
>>82654357
IT's a show about women fucking everything up and a young white boy having to fix everything and fight for equality for all because everyone keeps PMSing and screwing things up while the women stop a good dad from living with his son.

There is absolutely zero feminism here. First or Second Wave at least.
>>
>>82654178

Wait. You think a feminist show would have a male character never do anything? What?

Feminism is about dismantling gender roles. That's it. What did you think it was?

>>
>>82654510

>>
>>82654537

That's incorrect.
>>
>>82654453
For accidentally spoiling it?
>>
>>82654458

Everyone in the show screws up. Steven more often than anyone. They all also save the day and deal with their mistakes. Greg chose to let him live with the gems. No one is stopping him from living with his dad.

The women have different personalities, skills, and body types. The boy is affectionate and loving while never being shamed for it.

That's feminist.
>>
>>82654521

Completely serious. What do you think it is?
>>
>>82654458
I don't think that really fits. The entire gem cast is female, both the protagonists and antagonists. For every instance where one gem fucks something up, another gem has a moment of heroism. The human female characters are also portrayed sympathetically (see Connie), as are non-white characters (see Connie again; also note the casting of the gems). It's the non-Steven males who get the short end of the stick, really: Marty, Lars, etc. And Greg and Steven seem okay with their arrangement.

And I just listed a bunch of pretty obvious feminism in the show, so there's that too.

>>82654510
Two exceptions, actually: YD and Jasper. At any rate, when love and bonding are major themes, it's a given that most characters will be quick to befriend the protagonist.
>>
>>82654478

Equality, mostly. For the most part, the show does a good job of that. There do exist self-proclaimed "feminists" who happen to be very anti-male and dislike conventions like "damsel in distress", or how often the gems are portrayed as moody and emotional. Thankfully these peeps make up a veeeery small part of the fanbase, though they tend to be a vocal one

Also, tangentially, would you say a show's gender ratio affects how "equal" it is?
>>
>>82654818

Well I meant feminist, not tumblr. Tumblr is made up of very young people who will probably grow out of whatever phase they're going through. Hopefully.

As for gender ratio. Sort of? The majority female with token male approach is a bit refreshing because it's so rare while the reverse is so common. But character development and quality is more important that quantity.
>>
>>82654818
unless the target of the show is equality, equality should not be a factor in the creation of a show

I believe the amount of female characters actually reflects the creator being female and not some agenda

there are some moments, like in the new trailer where two watermelon stevens are hugging before the battle and saying goodbye, and the feminine watermelon runs to battle while the masculine watermelon looks after a baby watermelon in which there is but it isn't a reflection of the whole show
>>
>>82654911
Folks around here tend to conflate "feminism" and "Tumblr" out of habit. Does make it a bit hard to have a discussion.
>>
>>82654991
If the watermelon roles were reversed, there'd still be an agenda, though. Seems like a lose/lose, in terms of trying to avoid that.
>>
>>82648836
I honestly don't understand /trash/. Like the intended purpose is pretty cool, sending threads from other boards that don't belong there to a purgatory is something online forum's have done for ages. What I don't understand is why the fuck you're allowed to make new threads. Since you can make new threads it just turns the board into a sort of slower version of /b/ (that doesn't allow loli or shota for some reason) with nothing but porn dumps and generals that don't belong anywhere else. The addition of /trash/ also gives 4chan like 3 boards that are literally dedicated to nothing.
>>
>>82655080
I don't think so, they were purposely wearing masculine and feminine clothing, which a large majority of the watermelons do not
>>
>>82654991
The way I see it, the watermelons do that because what they do is based on Steven. They use childish methods (the nose knows), form family units despite the fact that they grow their babies in fields, and keep livestock they have no need of eating. They're based on Steven's perception of what communities and families are like... and from Steven's point of view, the dad stays at home and takes care of the kids while the mom(s) go out and beat up monsters.
>>
>>82655138

Misinterpretation, or because it reinforces their thoughts/beliefs that they are "good people" because they like something cute and something that's about love and loving everyone.

There's an actual word for this, look up the "Dolores Umbridge Paradox".
>>
>>82656813

Well, we'll see about that. If that rumor is true, there's a lot of ways it could go.

If we get five Rubies, it could be like they are all the same... kind of justifying Homeworld's policies... or they could be wildly different, despite looking identical.

Of course, there is probably social pressure to act uniform...

>>82657064

Feminism is the philosophy which operates from the notion that women should have equal rights in every way as men. Equal rights. Not more rights.

It's really nothing else than the idea that any individual human is in principle equal in value to any other, and that anything else is determined by choices and actions.

Of course, it makes a difference where you are born...
>>
>>82657707

"In comics and animation, I’ve noticed something I call the “Dolores Umbridge Paradox”. That is, the people who’re obsessed with sick, gross, dark humour tend to be the biggest sweethearts in real life. The people who only want to see cute, innocent characters getting up to cute, innocent stuff usually turn out to be the nastiest, most vindictive shitheads. Maybe your experience has been different, but it’s something I’ve found to be generally true. "

...Well, it applies to me. I am a complete pussy, but if you looked at my FA account you'd think I'm the love child of David Parker Ray and Katherine Knight.

>Also, tangentially, would you say a show's gender ratio affects how "equal" it is?
I guess I would? Most of the shows and franchises with somewhat of an equal male to female character ratio, or with both great male and female characters have been some of the best I've seen/read/played/etc.
>>
>>82657724
>Feminism is the philosophy which operates from the notion that women should have equal rights in every way as men.
And equal treatment in other areas. Feminists generally dislike things which they think are stereotyping women or portraying them as something "other" (with men as the default).
>>
>>82653748
Because certain people's psychotic woj rage doesn't reflect the actual opinions of their victims.

They're equally ignorant of things which support their victims' views, and tend to try and "claim" them for themselves by willfully misinterpreting them. For example, claiming that a species outside the gender binary actually supports the gender binary (which is a good thing because pwnage) due to being all one gender, despite the clear fact that the show has people who don't fit into static gender roles and treats that as acceptable.

I'm not OP, but Steven has had very little integration with responsible adult figures. He looks up to the CGs, but they are very mysterious. It's implied by the extended opening that they did not raise baby Steven, Greg did then he dropped Steven off when he turned 11 or 12 right before the beginning of the series to learn how to be a Gem. Imagine your single parent gets suddenly remarried - you've seen this person around while they were dating but this new adult is new and mysterious. You're curious, you want to get to know them, and you want to be liked by them. You start spending time with this adult and building a relationship. Then suddenly you find out they are like, a super hero with magic powers, which reinforces your idea that they are like so beyond your understanding and experience, but you still think they are cool and you want them to like you - you aren't sure why they are taking the time to hang out with you and be nice to you. And after they totally demonstrate their insane coolness they look down at you, waiting.

>Oh man, what do I say??

"Do you...know who I am?"

>Am I really so important to you? That you would go to such efforts to protect me?

"All you want to do, is see me turn into.."

> You are, you are so important to me!

It's "parental" validation rolled into validation for the audience that yeah, this goofy little fuck is going to do something amazing, something big.

it will be remembered as the show that leant heavily on the failed 3rd Reich of Feminism, kind of like those Disney super racist shorts, a product of its time, that hold some significant in the new day and age, but was firmly rooted in social problems of the past.

the whole plot line and stuff will be quickly forgotten in favour of looking at the effect it had on people "back in the day"

that or it'll be remembered kind of like Courage, bright and positive, but hiding horror.

>...Because it gives precedence to a male, which is precisely the opposite of what feminism is.
I have a feeling this is really wrong.

I thought feminism is about females and males.

You are only right if you have a very broad definition of gender roles. Wage gaps have nothing directly to do with gender roles.

If you want some more specific things:
>young boy, hybrid of human and conquering space alien race
>said race was sent to Earth to conquer/use it but ended up protecting humanity instead
>Big hype for the arc when another of their race shows up
>Said member of their race ends up giving a warning of more of their kind coming, more dangerous than they were.
>Two more of the race arrive at the climax of said arc
>Now we're getting hype for an arc dealing with the leader of a galactic, conquering empire
and, looking into more spoiler-y stuff and speculation for the future:
>One alien that's more disgruntled/has history with the lead characters ends up becoming really close to the hybrid child and that facilitates them becoming closer to the others
>Potentially here, not saying it's certain to happen, the powerful member of their race that invaded is later forced to comply/help the good guys reluctantly. ends up becoming a good guy but still being an angry prick.

Those are just minor details though. My skepticism about your reasoning is because you are saying that you and by extension others like or might like SU because it's like DBZ, but no one in their right mind would think someone would like SU just because they like DBZ. They are two VERY different shows regardless of their plot similarities. People don't watch DBZ because of they have a boner for those very specific plot points you mentioned. They watch it because of much broader things. Science fiction setting and so can superhuman fights, but SU and DBZ differ in a many very significant ways too.

I would never say "you love DBZ so you are probably going to love SU".
