>>82622653
What's his story?

He looks like the kind of nigga that'd be into smooth jazz.
>>
>>82622803

His name is Lozer. And yeah -- smooth jazz sums him up fairly well. He grew up in a united space colony -- unfortunately due to his genetic differences, he's somewhat less capable and this caused him to grow with an inferiority complex. Lozer found a living essentially being a fall guy for a few criminal "buddies" until they sold him out for their own safety and he ended up in prison. Years later, he gets out and seeks to make an honest living.

never progressing. I've deleted and rewritten and deleted and rewritten a lot of shit for so many times now, but its still not satisfying for me. I look at some of the works of other people on the site that I'm targeting and it's not like my story is worse than many of them, but I don't feel satisfied with my stories even though I enjoy the process. I started making comics because I make pretty pictures, and when I made a story, it felt more satisfying than just making portrait/pose fanarts because it actually has a message or well.. story, but I can't write for shiiiiiit.

Make characters people will invest in and have interesting things happen to/between them. Resolve it satisfyingly.

If the writing is good then bad art is forgivable and it'll still be a good comic, but the opposite isn't true. I can't emphasize that enough.

Honestly with how powerful digital art is nowadays, you could get away with tracing as long as you're careful about it. A lot of times the story you want to tell is limited by your art, but really don't be afraid to "heavily use references". I mean, USE the shit out of those references. Put another layer on top of them and trace it, then flip it horizontally and make some edits.

As long as you're not a retard like Nick Simmons you'll be OK.

I always wanted to do a story about a family of Superheros. But the MC has no powers and has to live with while struggling with his senior year in high school and bring a damsel all the time.

So how unoriginal am I?
>>
>>82625184
This. Just trace and edit a little, anon. Why improve your skill in drawing when you can do it the easy way?
>>
>>82625353
Reminds me of this Disney Channel Original Movie I saw when I was a kid. "Up, Up, and Away", I think.

Also, anything with superheroes needs a dramatically original take on it or it's like white noise. I think your idea could end up pretty good, but the premise might get a little stale. What else is there to the plot?

It's mostly like him just hating Superheroes and villains in general as they pretty much ruin his life even if it isn't related to his family like being stuck in traffic while a giant battle is going on.

Mostly things like that about how his life gets fucked over by the capeshit that hits his world. Plus I'm thinking about using the idea of him considering being a super villain most cases but as a tease most cases.

It seems generic and awful but I'm hoping to find out so things to spice it up. I'm going for more of the comedy drama feel of it, pretty much showing the hardships of living life within the shadows of others. But I'm just testing the waters on how it works.

Should I play it straight or go full parody
>>
I miss Jim Shaw
>>
>>82625656
Eh, that sounds like it might work as an episodic comedy along the lines of Dan Vs., but it really needs a set story if you want to take it beyond gags. "I'm late to work because the villain of the week melted the road and ugh now I have to watch Captain Amazing beat the shit out of him while flying, how ironic that I find this blase and annoying" will work as a joke once before it gets tired.

You can push him as a supervillain but does he actually hate his family or is he just kind of jealous? Is it in his nature to commit evil or is he hopelessly incompetent? Is he proficient with villainous technology or is he just winging it and hoping no one notices he has no power?
>>
>>82624818
ah cool

Even decorative lacing would have a faux split which, while not a true split, would at least look like one, similar in concept to the fake pockets that you find on a lot of women's trousers these days, where there's a buttonhole and a button but no actual pocket.

Yeah with action figures, it's going to be an action comedy drama, but it's all just parody.
you know how wwe always has some bad plot, like Wrestler A slept with Wrestler B's sister or some shit? that's pretty much it.
i'm thinking of using shitty dollar store wrestling and action figures for the characters, and cutting out images of people in magazines to be the audience kinda like how you see them in a ps1 or N64 wwe game.

To the anon who asked before:

No, I don't have a background in animation, but I have studied the contrasts between conveying motion in animation and conveying motion in comics for a long time. As a sort of hobby, and in the development of my own techniques.
>>
>>82631304

Hey, this isn't bad!
>>
>>82625172

Disagree. A lot people won't even give your story a chance if the art is shit. Conversely, if your art is really good, that can motivate people to put up with a mediocre story.

So unless your writing is God Tier or something, it's hard to hold an audience with even mediocre writing and shit art.

It's comics. Not literature. To me art is weighted more heavily.
>>
>>82633083
I love it. Nice page! I also like that you write your own sound effects.
you wrote that, right? that's not a font?
>>
>>82633155
I'm the exact opposite. Writing is what matters. I'll overlook middling art if the writing is on point. But if the art is great and the writing sucks, it just ain't good enough. Good visuals can only carry the work if it's animation. Still image comics? Writing all the way.

And I'm not alone in that sentiment. It's almost like many people have different tastes or something, and it's a fool's errand to make the post you made.
>>

>>
>>82633155
>Conversely, if your art is really good, that can motivate people to put up with a mediocre story.
I'm with you. I've read through countless chink comics to confirm this. HOWEVER, there is a limit to everything. A story with really shitty art like the OG One Punch Man still pulls in readers because of the story. Not to mention, even if the art is gorgeous but the story utterly shit, it'll only take time before the readers grow weary. You can only pull them in for a limited time.
I think topnotch art is good bonus and eye candy to attract people, but don't make your drawings look like utter shit too, you know.
>>
Good writing is important. And so is art.

But one is more important than the other, and its writing. Because writing is what has to be good FIRST.

But the mistake people are making is wondering how they'll gather the most eyeballs. Brad Bird knows what's up about this; You can't account for an entire audience of people you'll never meet. Too many pitfalls. When you're creating something, make the thing YOU have always wanted to see. Aim to knock the socks off a younger version of yourself.

One house has to be kempt before the other, making it more important. And that is WRITING.

Oh, absolutely, there have been comics where the art was great but the story was SO terrible that it just couldn't be salvaged. OR it had some other significant problem like horrible paneling or gratuitous walls of text.

I'd never say this was an absolute. There's a limit break on everything.
>>
>>82633412

Disagree. In a comic art is more important. If you have amazing art you can basically dick around and people will still at least look at your stuff.

if your art is garbage you'll barely get the benefit of the doubt. At least from me. I've "noped" countless books back onto the shelves after cracking them open. And I'm not the only one who's like that.

But of course, this is a matter of personal taste. All these generic cape artists are still getting work after all.

Also riffing on that other post - comics are about storytelling, which is the synthesis of writing and visual art. It's worth it to be good at both of them - and it's possible to be good at both of them independently but still be a poor storyteller.
>>
>>82634347
Soda probably would suit her personality more. And the type of story I want to make is about the changes that happen in young adult hood, for better and for worse and adapting to those changes and growing up. I picked her as the main character mostly because while she tries to be laid back and go with the flow, she's really quite anxious about her and her friends futures in their 20's.
Also I really like you art style, the beak nosed lady is cool.

ya know i kept adding stuff to it like chairs, hair shine and a bunch of other stuff but ran into to many problems with adding to many details

1-bar chairs in panel 2 distract from Armadillo holding his girlfriends dying body

2-hairshine distracts from the word balloons and pulls the eyes away from the word balloons and makes the page hard to read

3- accurate blood on the floor on the bottom two panels distracts you from both the characters and the word balloons

so yeah, i had to leave a bunch of stuff out that should be on the page so reading the page and seeing the art at the same time would be perfect! perfect page flow!

>>
>>82635228
I can see where you're coming from, but I really needed a break before getting started on chapter 2. This intermission has given me a chance to revise chapter 2 and get around half of it sketched out, build a buffer, get the hang of working in a new program, and generally get it so that chapter 2 won't suffer from a lot of the issues that I ran into with chapter 1.
I'd probably have been able to get around to this faster if I didn't make the inbetween strips, but I really didn't want to go that long without any updates at all.

I was hoping the setting of the strips, being more focused on the day-to-day lives of the characters when they're not on any kind of adventure, would let the reader see them from a new angle - Skeggöld as the rookie valkyrie who hasn't gotten used to all the magic stuff, Skalmöld's past coming up, etc. Also, a few subtle plot seeds and character introductions that will hopefully one day bear fruit.

Anyway, at worst there's gonna be one or two strips of filler after this one, so I hope you'll bear over with me 'till then.

Roughs/pencils for page 1 of an 8-page mini-epic. I have it thumbnailed out on paper, and I'll aim to build up a buffer then start it next month at one page a week.

P4: I thought the white haired girls were twins from the thumbnail, but they have completely different eyes. Maybe make white girl 3 even paler, and give pigtail girl 4 a ruddier complexion and redder hair, to get a little more variation in tones and to contrast more with Skeg at the back.
>>
>>82635815
Different guy, but the only filler strips I really liked were the newest one with Skeggold and (coincidence???) the one with Skeggold sharpening her axe. The other ones had problems, for example Death Pants was such an obscure reference that its impact was lost on most people who read it, and the one with Skalmold's ex personally made me scratch my head because I didn't know enough about the character (until you pointed it out in /hyw/, something the average reader doesn't go to) to understand why a teenage-looking girl would have an ex that looked rather old. (that one also has the problem of once again being Norse mythology that most of the readers won't get until you explain it to them, which kills the joke)

The stuff that was simple, like with Skeggold sharpening her axe and the most recent Skeggold one, worked, but the stuff that was more complex and required more advance knowledge of Norse mythology and the characters (knowledge that the average reader doesn't seem to have) didn't work.

I hope you don't view this as harsh criticism or anything, I think your comic is one of the best in /hyw/, I've just seen so much anime I don't have patience for filler that is largely lackluster.

That's intended. They're supposed to be identical except for the eyes (even then, the eyes are supposed to have the same general shape).

Ruddier skin's a good idea to make roundface stand out but I want to keep her blonde for that stereotypical Wagnerian Brunhilde look.

>>82636363
Nice trips.
I see where you're coming from too. With Death Pants, I'd hoped the joke "Svipul is into some weird magic shit" would still come across, but I think I got into a cow tools situation where people assume there's more to the joke if you know the context.
The one with the ex, I definitely overestimated how much the average reader would know about Norse mythology (or perhaps rather how readily they'd make the connections between stuff they kinda know) and relied too much on implication for Skalmöld's age - even if the reader reasoned that Skalmöld must be older than she aååears, it would take long enough that the punchline would've died.

You're not coming off as harsh at all! I really appreciate the feedback.

>>82636542
Try challenging yourself to incorporating a new technique in the drawing. Sometimes the reason I'm too lazy to draw something is because it's too easy.

I wrote a sex scene for my occult detective comic today, which I almost never do, because I don't want my comic to be labeled as a sex comic or anything, especially since it's a gay sex scene, so I can see it being off-putting or hard to take serious..

But anyway, just drew some back sides to see if, well, if I could draw them. And as always, I ''modeled'' for these myself. Usually I draw in front of a mirror, but drawing over your shoulder just felt so ridiculous that I just took some pictures.

What do you guys think? Yay or nay backs? And also, what do you think about sex in comics? I personally don't mind it, if it's anatomically realistic and without ''porn noises''. Cartoon sex I can't handle, instant turn-off. Just can't take it seriously.
>>
>>82637387
Yeah, sometimes you need to use common sense when using a reference picture. Many times the drawn pose is anatomically perfectly correct, but comes off as wonky, cause human anatomy can be pretty wonky sometimes and in specific poses.
>>
>>82637813
Those have really pronounced hip curves and buttocks for men.

Personally, I usually skip sex scenes in comics.
>>
>>82637813
jesus you've got some waist and butt going on. though each picture exaggerates it more, so i'm thinking you intentionally deviated from your own anatomy to get more variety

anyway do all the sex you want. the most offensive thing to me is a person holding back
obviously -i'm- not going to enjoy a comic with gay sex in it, but i wouldnt anyway if you kept it out just for me. how the fuck would that make me feel?
>>
>>82637813
Well I'm asexual so I don't reed porn comics, but I don't mind if it's part of the story. I meen, every normal person has sex so it makes sense. Are you yourself gay or is that just the characters? anyways, I think those backs look ok, though I think the anatomy is just a bit off. Then again, I have scoliosis so I'm really not the best to judge what a good back looks like.

>>82637955
Ha, I have mild scoliosis too, so it's funny you noticed it.

And yeah, I'm bi, so I like to explore that a bit in the comic. I don't want to glorify sex, though. I want it to be more realistic, mundane, disappointing, rough, drunken, spontanious, quick, dirty and all those things. Maybe you get a sense from those pictures that I'm aiming to do a porn scene, but that couldn't be further from the truth. I want to keep it real.

Whats up man?
>>
>>82639138
they're for an existing comic, though it's a story within a story iirc
nobody will ever do this with my characters
btw you're*

He's just posting random art without context, thinking it's the Batman thread. Just ignore him.

Touche Anon. Thanks for the correction.

dont think of them as backs, just draw the lines

also I just finished this page
>>
>>82639442
i love it when people are partially made of fragile crystals. that's happened in like three or four comics in here
>>
>>82639442
I like the use of lighting in the first couple panels. And this page alone has me interested to know more. Nicely done.

Crystal guy is cool and they play off each other well.

Here is the next page for my comic. Page five issue 3. And Yes its overt sexiness is intentional to the story.
>>
>>82640108
too bad i'm incapable of being turned on by overt mainstream sexiness. just feels like 'mom' yknow?
>>
>>82640108
That artstyle is so generic, like DC house style or some shit.

Finally drew one of the characters for another project I'm gonna start. This will be the 3rd comic I've got in the works, I think. I've got a lot of ideas.
>>
>>82640108
I literally have no idea in which order to read these panels because they all overlap like crazy.
>>
>>82640108
>2nd panel pointing posture
>pointing at someone while head up high
Haha I love it!
>>
>>82640715
I read it like S form, but its probably an inverted 3 form. Because otherwise it wouldnt make sense.
>>
>>82640231
Well good. The purpose wasn't to turn you on.

>Comparing art to something average from the big two
I doubt you meant that as a compliment, but I'll take it!

>>82640715
That's because there aren't any words to read yet. Maybe wait for the lettering before you say you can't read it yet.

>>82640744
??
>>

You shouldn't take it. The art in >>82640108 feels...boring. It's technically well done, it just has no life to it. If you look at art from other comics in this thread, The Sisters, Carrion Girls, Green Knight, Miss Melee, hell, even West Tree, those comics all feel more vibrant and "alive" than yours does. While on a technical level, they perhaps aren't as polished as your art, the art reads way better because of their style. Your comic...has no style. It's just generican American-style cape comic art #532790.

Shoving tits everywhere doesn't help either, it reminds me of Grimm Fairy Tales and other garbage like that which uses cheesecake to compensate for other deficiencies. Sorry, man, but that shit's boring.
>>
>>82640108
>>82640744
I'm not gonna lie this heads up pointing position looks awkward, especially when the character isn't look at object/person.

Nice line art though.
>>
>>82640822
I mean what I said. She's tilting her head (making it look like shes looking down on her enemy) while pointing at her enemy. Its funny, butnot extremely bad. Like shes mocking her. When you normally point at something, you dont really tilt your head that way, no? Dont even think big boobs block their vision so they have to tilt their heads that way.
>>
>>82640685
well that's creepy as balls
>>82640694
hey that's okay man, it doesn't have to be for everyone
>>
>>82640822
Fair enough. I'm a big fan of how you ink hair by the way. Although I think you should work a bit more on your boob anatomy.

Nah, good old man-on-man-action. I'd be super interested to explore lesbians, but honestly, I don't know any lesbians. Even though my comic has magic and all, the more human parts are 60-70% based on my own life, friends, family and whatever experiences I've had throughout the 21 years of life. I write what I know and see, so that's why I've settled with men for now. But I definitely want all sorts of stuff in to my comic.
>>82639442
Mm, I like this. Seems to be right up my alley.
>>82640630
The comic looks like some kind of superhero comic, so maybe it's suitable?
>>82640108
In what format do you publish your comic? Is it a web comic or..? Looks professional.
>>
>>82640838
>shoving tits
The sexuality is overt because it's a commentary on expectations of superheroines. The sequence is an illusion where they are all hyper sexual. One of the characters I freaking out about it.

And I'm still taking it as a compliment as it stands above most no name works. Thank you for your input. Even though I disagree, I appreciate you breaking down your position.

>>82640947
>>82640885
Ah! Now I get it. Yeah it's a little awkward. I can definitely see that. Lol oops.
>>
>>82641018
>The comic looks like some kind of superhero comic, so maybe it's suitable?
When compared to all but the most generic of house artists, every superhero comic has more life to it than that guy's comic.
>>
>>82640990
I'm just the writer so I will let my artist know about both points. Thanks for the words.

>>82641018
It's in print for the first issue and digital for the second two. I'm looking to move it towards web comic form but I'm having trouble with the square space template.

You can find the first two issues here:https://m.comixology.com/Veiled-and-Vile-1/digital-comic/218366
And herehttps://m.comixology.com/Veiled-and-Vile-2/digital-comic/290321

I would rate that code 2/5.

Without providing context we would never know that.

>that guys comic
>Says so after one panel

This guy >>82641018 is correct. The point is to emulate traditional superhero comics as much as possible so the satire and tongue and cheek stuff hits home harder.
