He only really looks ugly in the mask. and that's because they tried to make it like Batman with a covered nose. That completely changes the look of the character from fresh-faced and handsome to grotesque and ugly. That works for batman, but not for DD. It's like the Flash. The exposed nose look has stuck for a reason.

I think what they're missing is that Matt isn't supposed to be a boyish or innocent kind of man. Matt is genuinely a cool, outgoing and charismatic man that's successful and popular. He just holds himself back a lot because of his issues with his dad and his blindness, which honestly makes him even cooler to people.
