Superman and Batman ARE iconic. And older. As much as I love Captain America, and Spidey, the Cap is younger than Bat and Supes by about two years. Add like it or not, more people know Bat and Supes than most other superheroes.

On the comics side they had some amazing stuff in the 80s and 90s with Vertigo and the Morrison era on JLA.
