Fair enough. It just wasn't as recognizable as a bad thing for me. Like I just thought "Yeah, this is healthy. He's getting himself to talk and flirt with other girls and girls HIS age" and then they come in and make it seem like a bad thing. Hell even at the end of the episode they still point out it was a very important step in him maturing past his crush on Wendy.

mostly these. if you were there during the talkback, the padippica shipper butthurt exploded the moment dipper spilled those wendy photographs all over the place. the candip stuff only made it worse (if it had just been him wooing the non-established girls, i don't think it wouldve caused as much shipper shitposting, but because it was a ship that had some hints and minor support before it, padippicafags felt encroached upon and started to swing the opinion against the episode within the thread before the credits even rolled).
if roadside attraction had aired before NWMM, it wouldnt be as maligned. it was just another Monster of the Week episode where Dipper apologized at the end, so it was the same as 99% of the rest of the series. but by the time it aired, expectations were becoming ridiculously high, ship war shit was reaching cancerous levels, and it just ended up being a perfect storm of /sug/-like bad fandom behavior that further soured people's memory of the episode.
didn't help that the MRAs were starting to get out of control in the fanbase either and that episode gave them more ammo and prepped them for the extreme levels of butthurt they showed during the finale.

Yeah, a lot of season 2 was bad but this episode was some top tier garbage.
The first mistake is including even more pointless screen time of Candy and Grenda, two one dimensional fucks that never get explored past "awkward smart asian" and "it's funny that this girl is masculine".
Candy (who has been firmly established as extremely awkward/a social outcast) decides that she suddenly likes Dipper when he starts being confident despite having months to see his true character. A few minutes in to this shit and she's already a shallow hypocrite.
Dipper learns to talk to girls like they're actual people, and gets shit on. Mabel - who has literally spent her summer macking on random fucking monsters she finds in the woods - criticizes him.
I mean, most girl power episodes are bad. But this actually managed to fuck it up even more. Not only did the guy not do anything sexist to vilify him, all of the girls looked like massive cunts with serious double standards.
