The problem is they've hit the Dead Superman Ceiling. They got a lot of sales from Superior by "killing" Peter for a while. They can't top that outrage, and realization (and apathy) kick in. The audience can't care because all plots are meant to rile them up, meaning nothing in the narrative itself has consequence. Ben could come back next week, it wouldn't matter because nothing about the story has meaning anymore.
