I think it is good to have a few more soldier-superheroes in the MCU. We have plenty of vigilantes and even Steve Rogers is one now too. But it makes sense that we would have a few more superheroes who are like MCU Warmachine, who like the fight and isn't a leader in and of themselves. Not everyone is meant to fight under their own cause, some people fight for their government and that is okay too.

I'd say instead of "barely functioning" she should function pretty well, but only in a highly structured environment with lots of rules. like (duh) the military. In less disciplined environment she should just fall apart.
I'd say the most important thing about her is: she's a bloodthirsty sociopath who doesn't want to be one and is partially in denial about it. So she clings to rules and structure, because they tell her what's right. She clings to Jessica because Jessica makes her feel like a good person. She was very loyal to Steve because he had the same effect. In a way, she becomes a better person because people see her that way, because she's terrified of letting them down.

Don't touch anything from the Marvel NOW-era though. her two ongoings by KSD were fucking horrible and every book she was in used the KSD characterization, meaning "no character."

Go back in time and make the transition before her character and Marvel itself had turned to absolute shit.
I've been saying this since she put on that hideous suite. They waited to long to make her Captain marvel. They should've done it between House of M and Seige. She was a member of multiple teams and even leading one, and actually contributed to the narrative, she got a massive ego and confidence boost thanks to the Scarlet Witchs little alternate reality where she was already Captain Marvel, and she had a single actually worth reading, written and drawn by people who actually knew what they were doing.
But noooo instead they decided to belittle Mar-Vell's memory by bringing him back in a fucking tie in for a crap event, not even the main book mind you, a crappy add on. Had him say some cheap insperational words and then die off again, and then Tossed a crap writer and even worse artists on a solo series for Carol, while whoring her out across half their titles that all added up to nothing but cheap cameo's, doing less to cement her character but merely get her face out there with no actual foundation to go off of.
Give carol back her body and hair and put her in the Ms.Marvel Costume.
