Some not even trying to keep proportions, others semi-proportionate still with psuedo-cartooniness. A little bit from an idea I finished, a little from an idea I'm working on now, and a little just trying certain styles I never really understood and still don't.

In an unrelated thread a day or so back, we were talking about this comic Andrew Hussie made in which increasing skill leads to a certain uncanniness for a time. I'm almost certain I'm at that point. Nothing amazing, nothing horrible, just overwhelming mediocrity.

Thanks! I know there are quite a few color and clean-up errors, but I'm chalking it up to just learning experience for the future. Now that I have no deadline for myself, I would love to make a minute-long short for a concept I have and try to get it to look as clean as I can, since clean-up seems to be one of the hardest things for me in animation (Time-consuming wise).

i think i can do something similar to this with color pencils irl but i have no idea of how to do it digitally with all the tools and gradiants and stuff i need to use

Started sketching out some kind of Pirate Mermaid, but I have no idea what to do with her.

I also sketched her lying in a pool and another with a treasure chest at the bottom of the ocean, but I'm not sure where to take it.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>82584540
Maybe like an Ariel type character that's found some wrecked ship and is pretending to be a pirate. And she's fending off those old time divers with the big suits and porthole helmets and the hoses that go up to the surface.
Maybe trying to figure out why a wet musket doesn't work.

Or she works with pirates by luring ships into rocky areas like a siren.

Not so much the backstory (I figure she just looted a sunken ship or something).

I mean, I think I have an idea for a design, but I just start drawing without any firm idea of what the pose should actually be, so I end up not knowing what to do with her arms (which is why they are missing). I'd also like to give her one of those long, fancy coats (open fronted because shell-bra), but again, I can't draw it in because I haven't got the pose figured out.

I want to do more original art (instead of niceh interest fan art) and I was thinking of making this suitable for a print or postcard.

I had the idea to create a character for Overwatch.
She's a robot originally built for fighting fires, so she's equipped with a hose-cannon and has the ability to generate rainclouds that can heal allies and poison enemies.
I suck at drawing mechanical things though, so any design advice would be much appreciated.

I have no idea what kind of shapes/motifs to put in her design, except for her having transparent water storage areas around her hips.

I'm not certain what you're going for here (like I don't understand the pose exactly). What I think I'm seeing after looking through earlier posts is something I have a fear of or problem with myself. And that is the feeling of losing something by overlapping/foreshortening it.

welp i the first thing you should fix are your lines
they are very scratchy and it might be because of the way you use your pencil

what you want is to have nice smooth llines, look ast this video

also just try to learn one thing at a time, you can use this guide, i know it can be very frustrating and in my case it even made me stop drawing for a while but now im taking it a bit slower and i have improved a bit again after months of having no improvement

first time doing digital art, turns out drawing with a mouse is hard.
just powered through the justice league cartoon and totally-not-diversity-hawkman-replacement hawkgirl seemed to be the punching bag for an entire series, so i drew me a hawkgirl.
shamelessly mirrored wings as she's gonna be standing with dr. fate or stewart lantern, not sure which, and i'm not about to spend ages more drawing a wing that'll just be obscured anyway.
she looks real odd in a thumbnail, but seems passable to me in full-size. would it just be the odd pose making me think this, or is the anatomy deeply flawed? please tell before i become the next liefeld.

Detailed model sheets are available online. I know a moderate amount of toonboom, and I also know that they use it to animate the show. I made the character rig from scratch, but my rig isn't as good as Morty anon's, it's not as complex but similar principles.

i think the one on the left is just flat and the pose is weird, it almost reminds me of powerpoint clipart

Protip: when you're feathering for texture, always do that across the short side of the volume. Pic related is an example.

Also, try to keep the bulk of the hatching closest to the lines. Following post explains why

Hope pic related explains it decently. Since linework is still a simplification of volumes, the detail should naturally gather around the edges (the lines).

Otherwise what you will achieve (much like hatching across the long side) is that you'll flatten everything.

Yea, i used the model sheets that are available online but everything in that is drawn on top of that and the mouths/hands freehand drawing.

This is what it looks like once line width is equalized for the composite shot (man i love toonbooms ability to keep line width the same on any zoom).

For the first time in a while, I began a streak of daily drawings, to the point that I actually made a personal tumblr to upload them and share them to other people so that they could help me improve.

However, after a while of asking them a couple of times to help me improve by pointing out some deficiencies and problems with them and them don't answering it, I lost my desire to keep drawing and I haven't drawn in like 6 days going "what's the point if I can't improve and these guys don't feel like giving me some advice." Also my tumblr had like six followers, but four of them were bots.

It's hard being a hobbyist, poor so I only have pencils and papers and not having someone to personally help you.

>>82652996
Look for some critique outside of tumblr, mate. It's a good platform for posting personal progress, but it doesn't have the best structuring for active discussion and evaluation. (I also don't know how you tag it, that can and does play a big part in how much attention it gets, but you probably already knew that.) If you're looking for critique outside of the /co/ threads, I think pixelovely has a forum for it.

I can maybe feel where you're coming from, though. For months and months it's felt like I should be practicing to "get better," but there's no immediate challenge or trial I keep feeling like I'm preparing for. I could think of maybe a few chances when people could possibly "see my work," but there's just nothing concrete to motivate me. No immediately-achievable endgame for me to fight for. Hasn't been for months, probably won't be for months unless I can get lucky again.

Tumblr is for exposure, it's not a community and it's not a place where you want to ask for feedback.

Improving is tedious and slow, you better set goals for yourself on something to improve and work on that thing. If you're an amateur you probably don't know anatomy so that's a good place to start.

Moving on to make a new portfolio called
"Prisoner 301"
>>
>>82670631
Quick Summary:
Prisoner 301 is a recent addition to a comically high security incarceration attraction called Jail Land. Reputation is key to having higher status that comes with numerous privileges. This comes in handy for our fellow protagonist because he's committed one the biggest crimes of the decade. Unfortunately, he's been falsely accused of this crime. There are high expectations from his fellow inmates that he knows that can't be fulfilled. The only way to leave this land is by succeeding the ridiculous requests/games made the crazy Warden, to reduce his 500 year sentence.

So do you think the character sketches I posted might fit the main character?

Inspirations are Superjail and Catfish Deluxe studio, a bit of Panty and Stocking.
Trying to think of more but it's not coming to my mind right now

Kind of frustrated with the time it takes to work on something so I'm kind of switching back and forth between things to try an keep myself motivated.

I still need to work on the hair and some other things around the face and legs I think.
>>
>>82670821
Couple of things:

What do you mean by "attraction?" You make it sound like a theme park, which is what you might be going for, but then why would there be prisoners there?

Do you know what the crime was, or is it going to be a sort of "unspeakable depravity" joke?

As for the character himself, while he looks fine, he's not particularly distinct. I like the general design, but I'd do something with the hair. Maybe change the hairstyle, or go with the larger eyebrows that you have in one of your sketches!

If this is a project, I'd love to see more of it as it comes!

Jail land is kind of like a school for delinquents and a state of the art penitentiary to reflect the utopia outside (everything must be perfect). The citizens believe they are helping by making the delinquents more like “them” with their donations/tax dollars. Mostly due to the encouragement and advertisements from the mayor. The citizens often tour around Jail Land to look at the delinquents in their "environment" like it’s a Zoo and watch the criminals making attempts to fulfill the Warden's games (Jail Land profits off of it).

Jail land is fuckin huge with a lot of different sections. Which is why it's like a "theme park" because all those sections are themed differently.

I'm still figuring out the crime desu but it was against his own father, a corrupted mayor on the 30th anniversary of Jail Land. He was gonna spill the beans on his dad to the public. Which is why he was framed for a crime (by his father) and sentenced 500 yrs in Jail.

Which one of the sketches?
Thanks!

i think the main problem with your drawing is that your shading is all wrong, you need to select a place from where the light is coming and add light and shadows based on that

in some parts you are doing something that is known as pillow shading

and most of the time it looks terrible,

btw what drawing program are you using anon?
>>
>>82675888
I'm using Sumopaint, It's,uh OK kinda.

I'm using the free online version And there are a few limitations to it. And I don't have a tablet so I use the line and curve line tools to trace basically. When I don't and try to draw the lines always look squiggly and jagged. That's part of my taking forever complaint. Just to get the line done takes hours.

>>
>>82676768
I've tried that, I started doing that ,but I just don't get the results, I'm looking for, digitally at least. It looks like above but with these awful overlapping parts or tonal differences where the colors meet. But I'm not really getting the results I'm looking for now either. I don't know how much it plays into it, like maybe I'm blaming the tools instead of the lack of talent but Sumo has like a six layer maximum and it's not impossible to work around but it makes things complicated and tiresome. And I'm kind of relegated to working on this after work or on the weekends. So I'm sure part of it is I'm rushing through things and "Fuck it" or "good enough" have become like catchphrases.

I've tried downloading gimp in the past a couple times and both times my computer started fucking up afterwards. So now I think I'm kinda stuck with this for now until I feel like spending some money on this is justifiable. Maybe I'll start again tomorrow. Try something new.

Thanks for the advice and offer though.

Focus less on the outside, and more on the inside of the body. You're building your house without a proper foundation/frame, and it's going to end up looking pretty wonky in the end. Look up gesture drawing/capturing the line of action to get a better idea of how to draw the human form in situations like these.

hawkgirl poster from the other day again, managed to get a new piece in a day and a bit -- maybe a new record for most drawings in a short timespan.
this one spawned after a friend mentioned that martian manhunter is painfully underrepresented in comics and arts, so while trying to think of what to do with him i had a brilliant idea
please welcome j'onn st. j'onn, same dealio as last time; keyboard, mouse, and about a day of work.

incidentally, have a slightly revised hawkgirl.

I'm trying to make a sliding D.va in a weird mechgirl suit, unfortunately though I'm having problems (torso, angle), but mainly I can't get this leg/angle right.

what'd u use to animate with? Like what program?

make her right leg past her knee about twice as long as it is right now, its a little too short as it is right now
her foot looks a little flat too, try fleshing it out a little more along with her ankle
sorry if im being a little vague, anon. I have trouble explaining these sorta things
>>
>>82701672

I undestand for the most part I think. I think I may just duplicate the slide angle that like Vanquish uses, atleast with the other foot.

>>82574735

Neat. How long did a project like this take to produce?

Shouldn't he be a bit more flat? Maybe in the head portion atleast? I mean it looks good, but it's pretty unfinished so it's hard to give any real criticism. Is he going to have a tail?

wanna compensate for having almost no neck, but I'll try to make it more flatter. he's gonna have a tail, that place maker he's holding is going to be that severed tail.

thanks for your honest and reasonable thoughts
>>
>>82709631
I mean he'd be looking headless if i made the head flat, and i wanted him to be big and muscular in contrast to his compainion

is this any better?

>>

He looks fine either way to be honest. I was more just trying to find something. The flatter like that does look a little better to me desu. Again, it's just really hard to judge.

>>82709930

I like this, looks really Poppyish. How exactly are your brushes set for getting such large not perfectly refined (in a good way) lines? Whenever I do lineart (like >>82706068 ) it just comes out a bit too clean, and then I have to give it the once over or just make up for it heavily in coloring. Sorry if the questions weird.
>>
>>82710992
I like your lineart if it's any consolation. I think you need to work on foreshortening and how the body works with that.
>>
>>82710992
I am stealing the movement lines from Poppy, great observation!

I'm working in Krita so I can't give you any real specifics. I just try to keep the line weights varied because it makes it look better to me. I use bigger lines for bigger shapes and smaller lines for more of the detail stuff.
>>
>>82711053

Yeah, I didn't particularly do proper sketching or guides for any of the perspective, and started sketching out the head (big mistake) so the foreshortening is pretty bleh. It's probably my hardest thing to tackle, especially when not working from reference.

>>82711107

>Krita

I didn't even know this existed. How does this program compare to say Manga Studio/Photoshop? I use 5 and CC often (MangaStudio more than CC because it works with my touch features more often). Looks pretty legit.
>>
>>82711235
I'm not going to compare art programs that I don't know much about, just try it out for yourself and see if you like it or not.
>>
>>82709930
the motion lines on his face are really overblown, i think. they've just become a kind of hairy mass. the rest of his body already is showing movement, you really don't need that many lines on his face.
>>
>>82711316

>It's free open source

Oh, I didn't even notice that. Cool, I'll give it a swing.

>>82711394

I was supposing it would be something hitting him right in the face, but that's not particularly drawing in, so if it's just conveying a swinging motion out and no impact then I agree, face maybe has too much movement exaggeration.

How do you guys feel about Stabilization in drawing? I find for doing decent line-art it's almost necessary for me to have atleast SOME stabilization. It just feels kind of cheap using it though. I guess they're all tools of convenience so at the end of the day if it looks good it's fine.

I think it's pretty important, and fairly necessary for a tablet.

The real lifesaver is the vector eraser in Clip Studio Paint.

Screencaps from a thing. It's going to be animated, btw. And the lights and dust motes are going to be done in After Effects, I just made a mockup in Flash to see how it would look.

Not sure how I feel about the shading style but I wanted to try it out.

>>82713781
I don't have an issue with using it or others using it. It's not cheap, it's just an efficient way of doing digital lineart.
