I'm sure she also draws this face in that short

That nose bothers me. It looks like an electrical outlet holy shit.
>>
>>82564343
The same reason any other has a signature style.
>>
I know, rite? Why doesn't she completely change style all the time like any good artist would? What a hack.

It turns out the brother that got brain damage'd is Steven, and SU is all in his dying brain.
>>
>>82564634
Every artist has quirks and fallbacks.

I won't contest that SU is garbage though.
>>
I'm sorry, but her style is abhorrent. It's all so derivative
>>
>>82564634
>>82564648
Weren't these more likely drawn by the storyboarders that worked on these episodes and not Sugar herself?

She doesn't draw every frame of the show.
>>
>frames where the hands are doing sort of tensed poses where the fingers are flexed and the eyes are supposed to look alarmed/upset
>they're all the same
not defending rebecca but cmon /co/ really
>>
There's something about Sugar's way of drawing there's a lot of focus on philtrum.

It's offput ting at most times but I think it's interesting that a cartoon actually tries to play with that detail.
>>
>>82567578
She has really good line control, but her stuff is horribly ugly.
>>
I love that short of hers. It has grown on me with multiple viewings. It was also a warming surprise when I saw Steven Universe for the first time and I could recognize those expressions and style from the short.
>>
>>82564343
I want to know what's with that lettuce cheese and mayo sandwich. They had one in SU too

Also I love the music in that short
I wish there was an MP3 version or something
>>
>>82567909
She worked as storyboarder in We Need to Talk (greg's face) and although she is not credited, she worked on some frames in Catch and Release (I think it's somewhere in her tumblr or the crewniverse's one).

The same way nigger Ian did some poses for Peridot in Logdate but he is not credited as a storyboarder

Don't you have government retard checks to collect?
>>

Ian and Rebecca do at least a couple shots in nearly every episode, even if they aren't credited. I do love Rebecca's work, mainly her hands. She animates hands so well.
>>
>>82564343
cause it's like her style, man

What's wrong with SU besides its fanbase and maybe a little too much drama?
>>
>>82572983
>a little too much drama
I'd say that's a pretty big one on its own. The show is the cartoon equivalent of a women's support group. Crying and hugging and basically falling to pieces at the drop of a hat.
>>
This is trying way too hard. We get it, you don't like SU. Doesn't change that Sugar has drawing chops.

The comparison is like saying making an upside down line for a frown is being a hack. Holyshit people emote in similar ways, no way.
>>
>>82574365
So you never watched the show and are shitposting, cool.

Not that I don't mind, just be upfront about it
>>
>>82574413
So you're throwing away a valid critique because it doesn't suit your narrative, cool.

You're really gonna contending the characters are emotional wrecks?
>>
>>82574433
Yes because "they cry all the time xD" isn't even an apt meme that applies here. There's times where they cry sure but a lot of that has been absent in many of the recent episodes and prior. They're more or less building up to something with a pretty good lack of that sort of content but of course, that won't stop shut posters from bringing up SU out of /sug/ to derail every thread without ever watching it. Not to mention threads like this because we just can't stop talking about Sucrose related content "but we totally hate it tho xD"
>>
>>82574495
When I stopped watching the show, it was because every episode featured an emotional breakdown and flimsy pat on the back mending. Maybe that changed, but it's not a "meme." If people shit on that aspect too much and you're tired of hearing it, that doesn't make it not true.
>>
>>82567578
>I'm sorry, but her style is abhorrent. It's all so derivative
...of?
>>
>>82568191
>There's something about Sugar's way of drawing there's a lot of focus on philtrum.
Examples? Not one image in this thread depicts that.
>>
>>82574644
Everytime I see stuff from this show its either clear aping of anime or generic cal arts blobs.
>>
>>82574683
I don't know if the style is aping anime, but the content certainly does.
>>
>>82574632
I've also semi-dropped the show for similar reasons. Anything focusing on the cluster or the revelation on new gems/fusions, I'll watch. But slice of life episodes featuring Lars and Sadie or the Fry family or Amythyst feeling insecure yet again, Pearl breaking down because she misses Rose, or any episode that elevates Connie and Steven's relationship is a drop for me. Those episodes are so boring and they're so frequent. It often feels like in those episodes, the crew just wants to prop up some hammy moral/speech for one of the characters to say and everything else is a backdrop. All problems seemed to be solved through talking, hugging, back-patting, or some heart-to-heart. It's boring, it has no tension.

The only time it's not is with the Homeworld Gems, which is why I'm way more interested in them. Emotional breakdowns would be way more powerful if they didn't already exhaust them by the end of season 1. Look how strong it was when Eddy cried in the EEnE movie, because we had never seen him cry before. SU's already gone too far down that road and now I'm just numb to the "OMG so sad!" moments of the show. Just looking forward to the mystery/adventure at this point.
>>
>>82576332
So you basically don't care about the characters. The show is primarily character-heavy (the mysteries and lore are secondary), so that's the problem. You have to be invested in them.
>>
>>82564634
>>82564648
Is it also bad that Genndy Tartakovsky loves doing that slow upward pan?
>He uses the same visual technique, what a hack
>>
>>82576902
Reusing the same kind of shots is very different from using the same kind of expression. A large cast shouldn't all draw from the same pool of expressions
>>
>>82577104
Well its a good thing the expressions in SU are varied.
>>
>>82577104
It looks very different sure, but it's still using a distinctive style and/or technique. And that's not to say Genndy doesn't reuse the same expressions for different characters either.

Why does Pen Ward love using this face so much?
>>
>But a few liked David Bowie's music in the 70's

It's an acquired taste and only a few can see art for what it is before the casual crowd eventually find it and commercialise it. 30 years from now sugar will be up there with the best.
>>
>>82577284
XD
>>
>>82577236
Not sure that's stretched out enough to be a Rebecca face. You can see plenty of it at the end of Rose's scabbard
>>
>>82574433
Season 1b was poorly paced and had a bunch of crying episodes all at once. 1a and 2 are far more reserved with it. You're literally a year too late with that criticism .
>>
>>82576607
You could say that's a failing of the show. As he said, emotion is more powerful when it's infrequent and it's the show's responsibility to build up to it. If something is so common causes viewers to roll their eyes, that's not necessarily their own fault.
>>
>>82574409
You might be overestimating her anon, she's okay but it's nothing special, there are hundreds of artists on tumblr and deviant art better than her.
>>
>>82577284
bait
>>
>>82581152
Yeah, and there are a bunch of Disney veterans working on Penn Zero right now and that show is trash.

She's good for what she is and excels at what she does. You don't have to grade her art on a learning curve with other professional artists.
>>
>>82582696
>and excels at what she does
She found an audience. Let's not go crazy.
>>
>>82564343
>>82564634
>>82564648
>NANI!?
>>
>>82582804
She found an enormous audience and made a critically praised show. How is that not excelling for someone who got a show at around 25 with only one show's worth of experience under her belt? In terms of life goals, she pretty much peaked by the time she graduated college.
>>
>>82582880
Success and talent are not the same thing. By your own admission you've already stated this. When you said "excel" I took that as a measure of her talent. If you are saying excel as in how audiences receive her, so be it.
>>
>>82582953
But the key point of my post was "excels _at what she does_", and that includes her ability as a storyteller for children's media.
>>
>>82564634
>>82564648
Christ these two are exactly the same
