Good evening owls of /co/,

what will blow up tonight?
>>
>>82560323
anyone got get some FCBD swag?

anyone see someone traumatized by the CW2 freebie?
>>
>>82560363
when I go to my LCS on FCBD, I never pick up any freebies
>>
>>82560363
I haven't actually

I think people got most of their anger out a couple weeks ago when it was leaked

But maybe there's some rage I haven't found on twitter
>>
>>82560423
I never do either because honestly, I don't need more stuff and it's mostly stuff I'm not really into

Eiling's such a prick
>>
>>82560323
Hello Storyteller.

Looks like he didn't quite explode this time.
>>
>>82560363
Nah, FCBD doesn't really happen where I am. I would have liked to pick up the Rom, Space-Knight thing maybe.
>>
>>82560458
>>
>>82560494
so how are you owls today? I painted a chest of drawers.
>>
>>82560363
The only times I've gone to FCBD have been on accident when I went to pick up my normal pull and it happened to be the right day.

I usually love free shit. I don't know why this doesn't do it for me.

I really want Simon and Jessica's book to be good, but Humphries...

Clayface was revealed for Gotham.

>>
>>82560521
I had tons of stuff planned today that I just didn't do, a combination of staying out way too late and the webcomics thread on the board making me catch up on a bunch of shit I used to follow.
>>
>>82560521
I'm literally running out of space with all these X-Men comics, so even though I was originally planning to keep the collection just because, I'm gonna have to nuke it.
>>
>>82560593
Gotham without Batman is actually pretty interesting and an elseworld I would like to see currently in maybe a short limited series DESU.

>>82560573
It really is so good. I can't see Rob Williams' Suicide Squad coming off in the vein of Ostrander, but I wish someone these days would try to replicate what he did.
>>
>>82560521
>So how are you owls today?
Fine. Although... it's almost too stupid to explain, I had a dream where I was playing this video game that was like a mashup of Kingdom Hearts and Mario Party.

I don't even fucking know. It looked kinda fun though.
>>
>>82560640
Ah, dude! That's some crazy shit.
>>
>>82560655
I once had a dream I was watching a show I had created about a family of suburban worms on the Moon.

It really is.
This entire season had been amped up.

It's only a matter of time before Disney buys everything and delivers that game to you.

>>82560560
Oh man, that is some horrible shit up there

>>82560573
Heeeey, maybe we could mix some Squad into this, Ostrander writes some issues late in this run (and you WILL see THE WALL here)

That's a baaad joke, but it makes me imagine like Patch Adams replacing the Wall.

I dunno, I think I might almost be okay with that. The gameplay looked fun and the story seemed interesting-ish. The main character's family was possessed by like, voodoo demons or something, and she had to beat them one by one.

Dreams always seem simultaneously coherent and nonsensical.

You can get cheap external drives, both portable and plugged, refurbished direct from a reputable source. I have an older iMac I like to keep that I mainly use as an office stereo (because great speakers) so I needed a Firewire that was also USB 3.0. I got a 1TB LaCie from the manufacturer (so full warranty) refurb for $99 (they retail for $249 - 299+ at the time).

I've seen inexpensive ones on Other World Computing and there are other reputable sites, or you can stick with Amazon. A friend bought me my 2TB plugged that is where I keep my comic horde for $150 or so, from them. It's an Iomega.

>>
>>82561793
>I'm kind of a sucker for this whole "reconnecting with your adult kids" story
It's a very real premise, and thus easy to get invested in.

I kinda feel like superhero comics have really lost the urban fantasy feel they once had. It'd be nice if more cape stories were about dealing with more grounded situations rather than fight yet another apocalyptic giant dude.
>>
>>82561930
>>82561952
Say, speaking of computer speakers, mine are 1) over a decade old 2) one fell prey to Kid Flash and keeps falling apart. Any general recs for something good and small to plug into a PC? Do they make 'em wireless yet?
>>
>>82561964
It all harkens back to the death of the supporting cast. Now it's all about the latest summer blockbuster event or whatever. In a way, superhero comic books have definitely regressed.

>>82561960
Black dude I think but subject to the indignities of original and re-flat coloring

>>82561964
There's a full texture to these stories, in part because they're not decompressed and a lot of detail goes into each issue

>>82562038
Everyone should be forced to write 4 to 8 page stories down to a fine art until they're allowed to tackle 20 page ones.

More storage is never a bad idea, X-Anon. Especially if you're still in school, you really want to back up everything. One spilled bong and you could be fucked hard on a semester worth of work.
>>
>>82562038
I hate to sound old, but comics used to be more complex and dealt with actual issues, which fit with the idea of extraordinary people doing what they feel is right. Now things have become far too basic, and boil down to "beat up bad guy".

>>82562055
>There's a full texture to these stories, in part because they're not decompressed and a lot of detail goes into each issue
Decompression was a mistake. Or at least, the type of decompression that's common now. You'd think longer stories would mean more character development and deeper exploration of ideas, but no. It's all just filler.
>>
>>82562195
>>
>>82562137
Harking back to a week or two ago: That's my concrete criticism about Hellcat, there's an entire issue covering about ten minutes of real time, and most of the ten minutes are characters passively waiting for something to happen because the focus is on the group who's captive.

You have to be a master to make that work, and it didn't work. It's not a comic where you get your value in that $4.
>>
>>82562101
Do any writers workshops offer up lessons in short story writing? That really should be a thing.
>>
>>82562226
>You'd think longer stories would mean more character development and deeper exploration of ideas, but no. It's all just filler.

I hate how true this is. And it's not just capeshit at this point. I don't know how you fix it.
>>
>>82561964
They had problems back in the day too, though. Reading the Dazzler storytimes, I kept getting disappointed at how they kept dragging her into superhero fights even though the heart of the comic was her career and relationships.

It doesn't help that Bendis was one of the early pioneers, and is still going strong using the same damn style.
>>
>>82562252
You know, I think DeMatteis offers writing workshops, and he's certainly written enough short stories in his time to know how to do it.

>>82562271
One thing that might help is to stop trying to make every single fucking storyline into an "epic". Not everything needs to be worldbreaking, you can have low-key shit too.

>>82562317
Bendis' problem is that he tries to insert character development and interactions in his stories, but he doesn't understand how people work. Everyone he writes is an annoying, immature douchebag.

>>82562476
>>
>>82562236
It's really interesting to think about how easy or hard it is to pare down a particular comics issue. Right now stuff like Providence, or even The Fix, is fairly dense and it'd be difficult to hit all the notes in an issue while taking a big cut in pages. But other stuff, it's easy. And there are comics that could be cut down but use their space to good effect, like Omega Men. The pauses and spaces in that are part of the work.
>>
>>82562499
>>
>>82562476
Wet Moon is so obviously Not For Me that I don't feel completely comfortable criticizing it, but yeah. The first four volumes have very little happen beyond an inching in and hinting towards relationships. It's an extremely slow comic.
>>
>>82562520
new Fix next week

I appreciate how much work Lieber puts in on each issue in the service of comics-style funny storytelling.

Reading Tom Taylor's Stuck On Namek epic was so grinding because each issue had so many clear red pen places in it, even allowing space for Nicola's glorious asses

I think it's been retired by the author now but I probably would have kept reading it if not.

Even with slow pacing and a teeth-grinding cast there's something appealing about it featuring a great variety of body types that is nonetheless very clearly driven by the artist's fetishes and preference. That's a hell of a lot more interesting than the extremely safe Jem comic. I like a creator who wears their heart on their sleeve sometimes.
>>
>>82562226
>I hate to sound old, but comics used to be more complex and dealt with actual issues, which fit with the idea of extraordinary people doing what they feel is right. Now things have become far too basic, and boil down to "beat up bad guy".

The shift in writing away from wordiness and individual issue stories from the 2000s killed a lot of the room they used to have to build supporting characters and themes and actual issues.

When you're writing a comic like 1/6th of a movie script, and for as many full page or even two page spreads as possible, there's just less room for story.

>: Ronnie/Jason is a fine Firestorm

It was good before Blackest Night, okayish after (because killing Gehenna was ugly forced drama) and very badly written out of the gate in New52, but I only looked at like the first or two of that because it was pretty famously bad.

IMO the best period of JasonStorm was when he could Matrix with whoever was available. It made for some fun mixes.

DC never outright stated a ban on smoking as far as I know but I can't think of the last time I saw a character smoking

maybe Al in the first Earth 2 annual? I remember being surprised that he had a cigarette
>>
>>82563143
Early New 52 Firestorm was really weird and violent, and it got completely swept under the rug.

So, let's review.

Classic villain Dr. Spectro is an in-universe fictional character made up by the government as part of Captain Atom's cover story. So after figuring out the truth, this guy, who may or may not be the Rainbow Raider(?) decides to become the real Dr. Spectro to claim the trademark.

>>82563176
I kinda liked the basic premise.
>>

Add to that how Captain Atom's government cover story is his pre-DC Charlton-era canon, and it's all delightfully meta

Ooh, that reminds me of something I'll run later, that's short

I think Gail defaults to horror and grindhouse when she doesn't have a plan. This leads to some really off-the-mark stuff, like Firestorm and The Movement and Babsgirl.

Intentional horror, tho, totally different story.

I guess, but she kinda has an unfounded reputation for being more Disney than she actually is. I expect some amount of grossout from her, physical or psychological, it's just a matter of whether her execution's on point or not.

Even her excellent DCAU episode had that little touch.

Arthur @MsNonCompliant 1h1 hour ago Bendis has shown in issue 0 that he has no idea how to write Carol, and that CW2 is going to be an awful to it's female cast

Yes, Carol fandom. Be loud and stand up for something that is legitimately bad.

Meanwhile, I know someone who legitimately doesn't think Marvel will delete/kill off the remaining comics Captain Marvel legacy if the movie's plot requires it, and if it would streamline the brand.

Speaking of Carol, I saw some art of her new look, but the outfit was colored black. I much prefer it over the blue.
