It's a solid film that carries the first plot while also having the weight of establishing an expanded universe going into The Avengers.

I'm so tired of this meme opinion on Iron Man 2. It was superior to Iron Man 3 and is a solid sequel, that, like I said, had the burden of setting up a more expanded universe in between Hulk, Thor, and Avengers, and it succeeded. There are a lot of good moments in the film, especially with Tony and his dad and Coulson.
Sam Rockwell fucking killed it and Mickey Rourke outperformed anyone in Iron Man 3.
These two alone blew away anything that came after.

I feel like Iron Man 2 gets an unreasonably bad rap. Like, it wasn't good, but it wasn't bad either. It's not like Iron Man 3 or Thor 2 where I just left disappointed. There were a lot of cool scenes, it's just got the problem of a messy plot and a few other quibbles.

I rate the Thor movies very differently depending on whether I'm being honest about my irrational love or whether I'm actually trying to be rational and critical about how good they really are.
Thor 1 is actually a solid movie. It's tight, heroic, appropriately corny and visual spectacle. Also villains are one of the MCUs biggest weaknesses and Thor 1 is responsible for Loki, one of the MCUs best. The protagonist having a strong emotional connection to the antagonist and the antagonist's motivations being relatable and sympathetic are a major strength of Thor 1 considering the majority of the MCU villains are just wealth/power obsessed suits or dark alien dudes with paper thin backstory and motives.
That said Thor 1 of course has issues, primarily how they handled the Jane romance. For reasons I cannot explain however I totally enjoy the corny Jane romance shit, but frankly it is badly done.
Thor 2 on the other hand is actually not that great. It's poorly paced, overly focuses on a weak and annoying supporting cast, has a trash villain and in general is kind of a mess of a film. But I love it, I love watching Thor on screen. I love MCU Asgard. I love the fact that a big budget Hollywood movie can even exist in which laser gun wielding space Dark Elves raid space Asgard and the space Asgardians have energy targes, that shouldn't be allowed to exist. I love that the opening of the movie is Thor casually talking about how he managed to resolve an interplanetary space war and bring the Nine Realms back in line as if that shit couldn't have been it's own fucking movie. I love that Thor rides the London Underground in the middle of a interplanar duel with Malekith. I even love the corny bad Jane romance shit.
I love every second Thor is on screen in the MCU. But that doesn't mean I can't be realistic and critical about the actual quality of his films. But fighter jets flew through a hole in space time and ended up in Vanahiem! C'mon, that's great!
