I'll start, Go Get a Roomie is a comic i've been reading for a while and its one of the few slice of life webcomics where I enjoy the characters
>>
I have GGaR in my reading list, if only for delicious Richard.
>>
>>82516770
I think its worth the read, the relationship between the two female leads has suckered me in a way webcomics havent before
>>
>>82516617
Harpy gee is one I never see discussed.

I also have a lot of love for Cassiopeia Quinn.

GGAR is good but sometimes its a bit preachy.
>>
>>82516617
Roomie is a shit comic. The art is god-tier beautiful but the writing is terrible.
>>
>>82517147
I'll check those out
and I totally agree on ggar's preachiness, especially that stupid dreamboy labrat character, its the only character i just can not give a shit about in that comic

Let's Speak English has gotten pretty popular because it's a simple gag comic and nobody talks about Mary's first comic Kiwi Blitz which is still running, or her newer one Sleepless Domain which is also good and more popular than the first one.

I like Junior Scientist Power Hour, but I wasn't able to stick with The Last Halloween. I feel like her storytelling chops aren't quite there yet.

the thing with ggar is that roomie it´s just a carbon copy of zii from menage a 3, she in fact just remake zii without her love for dicks, roomie it´s just a lesbian version of zii, chloe as almost every lesbian hate the idea of women being penetrated by dicks

It's a nice urban fantasy story about monsters secretly existing alongside humans, with some of the best art I've seen in a webcomic.

Friday 4Koma is simple 4 panel comics, some are pretty clever.

Another one that I enjoy a lot is spellcross. It's done by a guy from /v/. I really like the world that he made, the characters are likable, and the story is decent (some anime tropes can be seen from a mile away, but it works out). Unfortunately it seems to be on hiatus, and hasn't been updated in a while.
>>

Before I head into work, one other one I remembered, Next Town Over. I am a sucker for westerns, and this one tickles that fancy. The art is fucking gorgeous, the writing is great, and the way the story is being told keeps you guessing who the real villain is.
>>
>>82516617
Started decent, but then the writing got horrendously shit.

I just got into it, and it kind of surprised me. Seeing all the posts on /co/, as well as the quality of the writing and art, I figured it must actually be pretty popular.

But then I actually go read it, and it's operating from this crappy portal site and the author's personal page looks like it's directly from the 90's.
>>
>>82520522
It's a comic predicated entirely on one shitty joke. The art is good, but that's it. I just don't understand this appeal of lolrandumb webcomics. I honestly don't. It's the same as with that Axe Cop bullshit hipsters insist is good stuff. No, it isn't. It was written by a fucking ten year old.

I mean, yeah, funny, the monster is an adorable seal pup. And the gruff Conan ripoff* rides a giant pug. Hi-la-ri-ous. But that's stuff that works for a gag comic. Basing an entire long form comic on such a premise? Tiring.

*Not really, of course. The majority of the people who "rip off" Conan don't know the first thing about the character, and are instead ripping off the public perception of the character, which is a mix of stereotypes based off Frank Frazetta's work and the Conan movies.
>>
>>82523713
Do "hipsters" insist Axe Cop is good?

I really like Vattu but noone ever talks about it. Or Riceboy as a whole for that matter
>>
>>82524011
Well, I haven't seen them sip their craft beers through their beards while riding fixies, but Axe Cop just strikes me as something that hipsters would like. It's lolrandumb enough for them to act like it's never been done before, and at no point runs the danger of developing any sort of internal consistency or any other standard for quality storytelling.

It's almost as if it was purposefully made to appeal to people with no taste, or who reject good taste. In other words: Hipsters.
>>
>>82524186
>nobody ever talks about Vattu or Riceboy

Maybe that's because they're all done talking about it, because those two are somewhere near the top of the list of webcomics that get mentioned every single time the concept of webcomics comes up.

I found Vattu to be a little longwinded, and never really got into it. Riceboy was OK.

I couldn't get into it. The same problem as Vattu, really. Too slow for my taste. I also think a lot of the author's strength is in the use of colour, and the black and white nature of the comic threw me off.

I used to read a lot more webcomics, but at present I'm reading Unsounded and Endtown. They satisfy that need I have for things to keep moving. I appreciate that Ashley Cope keeps pacing in mind, even if she does like to dwell on cute things a little too much for me. Endtown also keeps moving, and is very character driven. I tend to like character driven fiction.

I also used to read Spinnerette, but dropped it at some point. Never picked it up again. It's a servicable parody, though /co/ seemingly got its panties in a twist over "SJW" issues.

One of my favorites is also Crossed: Wish You Were Here. It's probably the best comic in the Crossed canon, and it has the two things I like: Proper pacing, and character driven plot. It also has an ending to it, which is nice. In my opinion, most webcomics drag on for too long. There's this one semi-furry webcomic I used to read in my edgy late teens, and it's STILL running. Let me check. Yup, last update was yesterday. It started in 1997. That makes this comic as old as my career as a chronic masturbator.

Honestly, long form webcomics are fascinating. But very rarely are they readable.

The guy who writes it in HYWC has called it "Fright Night with wizards" . It's a low power urban fantasy comic about three sisters. One is an ugly english teacher, one is a stripper dating a Zak Bagans guy, and one's a teenager.

First two issues are meh to look at, but the cast is pretty good. Bad guy is a violent clayface guy who wants to talk to their mom, because he used to work for their dad. Apparently they ran a cult.

Last update was uncomfortably violent.

Considering view's pedigree (I'd say 75% know about Cheer from how often it gets reposted on /b/), I'm surprised so many folks here don't know about their serialized work.

Scrub Diving is hitting a really nice stride (and is hot as hell right now). Space Pulp was fun for what it was, but I think Never Mind the Gap was the best thing view's done overall.

It's probably got toxic-levels of lesbian and trans-ness for the folks of 4chan, but I also really like "As the Crow Flies" by Melanie Gillman. It's hit a pretty long stretch of no-updates recently, but the colored-pencil art can be gorgeous.

Dude, the nuns being gay is one of the things that the comic is all about. The author has said multiple times that cishet folks literally dont exist in universe.
>>
>>82524624
Vattu is to me the best comic he's done but it is a slow play. I have a very high opinion of Vattu, it does an excellent job of showing people at the same time as showing the structures that influence and control them. One of the reasons Vattu is so special (or powerful, or terrible, depending on whose view you would take) is that she is without these structures.
>>
>>82524597
No, it's more than one Anon. I periodically mention it on /tg/ or /co/.
>>
A lot of webcomics that don't get mentioned so much are hurt by their update schedules or hiatuses - e.g. Power Nap, Alpha Flag, String Theory. Those are all very good.

Bouletcorp doesn't get mentioned often for how impressive it is.

>>
>>82526917
>Power Nap, Alpha Flag, String Theory

Yeah, I've read all of those at one point or another, and just didn't keep reading. Honestly, Power Nap was far more interesting with its sleep-free world than with whatever it tried to pull in the dream world. I really lost me, there. But that's one of the failings of webcomics: It spent so long building up what turned out to be a mere prelude, that I couldn't be arsed to give two fucks about its REAL plot.

String Theory, same thing. It's got this Endtown/Fallout retro-future vibe, with mutants and stuff being implied. But it's all about the ennui of the possibly evil main character and the girl he's in love with. I didn't click the link to the man with the evil-looking eyes for a love story. I don't even know what the story is anymore. A real shame, because the art was pretty attractive.

>Fighting goes more against the idea than lesbians
'fighting' is not frowned upon. There are plenty of reasons as to why someone could fight. For example, for self-defense. Hell, we had the crusades. It's believable that they could learn that as some very weird type of nuns. But lesbians go straight to hell.

>>82526806

Roommates and Girls Next Door.
The latter is a spinoff of the former, by a different author.
It's a musical theatre nerd's wet dream, about Jareth and Sara from Labyrinth moving into the same apartment building and rooming with Eric and Christine from Phantom of the Opera, respectively.
Characters from plenty of other works are included, like Inspector Javert and James Norrington who live across the hall.

It sounds like a 14 year old girl's shitty fanfic, but it's really good.
The only bad bit is that it's only on DA instead of it's own site.

Quantum vibe updates mon-fri with competent art, and is a sci fi comic, those are pros.

Cons is this is the guy who does those weird libertarian sci fi comics and his politics leak. But eh, it's no werder than reading pre-40s Heinlein.

Again, normies react like they've been bad touched when someone does politics in their comics, so I'm not surprised /co doesn't ever go near this one.

Question for anons:

how does one, who doesnt want their comic to be lumped in with ">webcomics", make a comic on the web?

I suppose it's a pretentious way of thinking as a creator. I want to make a 'webcomic' which could never be grouped with any other. something unique and unlike your average tumblr reblogged or RSS-fed digital story comic. it wouldnt have plot, no deepest lore, but no tropes either. nothing.

Kind of like david lynch's angriest dog in the world

has it been done?

First you must train your spiders to weave in the traditional 3-9 panel formats - this is why most "webcomics" publish on a monday, wednesday, friday schedule, as it takes a day for the spiders to create a suitable web for the artist to work on.

Once you have a regular supply of suitable webs to comic on, then you can begin the delicate task of gently blowing small, very watered down, droplets of paint onto the webs in the pattern you want.

Don't worry about the pattern being funny or interesting - it is the spectacle of the process being completed on a regular schedules that delights readers.

Next comes the even trickier task of faxing the completed web to the internet , care must be taken while feeding the web into the fax machine or else it might be destroyed, causing your readership to frown, which is bad.

S... Spades Slick, the mobster? Not the bellsuit guy in her own comic? I guess that's amusing enough, just double checking.

MS Paint Masterpieces is really good

It's too bad the comic switches between decently active and deader than disco on a regular basis

I feel like I so rarely see good, serious space scifi. I probably haven't been looking hard enough.

Outsider is fun, but slower than fucking glaciers. There have been a few other ones I recall, but their either mainly comedies or just not terribly interesting. A lot of Firefly-like stories, honestly. Kinda gets old after awhile.
>>

Freefall, despite being slllllightly furry, is actually really good hard sci-fi underneath the 4 panel newspaper gag-a-day format.

I said it's best Crossed property, didn't I?

The problem with Crossed is that it's Garth Ennis' work. And Ennis is an edgy retard. Crossed is good almost by accident, because it's actually a rather good send-up of the zombie apocalypse craze. Ever since zombies stopped being scary, we've been seeing wacky zombie stuff. Even The Walking Dead is absolutely ridiculous with its zombies.

But Ennis being the shitbag he is just drags it out into pointless torture porn half the time. however, the webcomic is not done by Ennis, but by a fellow names Simon Spurrier. The webcomic also massively dials back the torture porn, and puts the main cast on an island where they try to survive. So no bullshit about promised lands or whatever. This turns the concept of the Crossed far more into an external threat, pressuring the group of survivors, rather than the main event. This is an improvement. The story is essentially about the main character trying to wheel and deal with his fellow survivors, while also dealing with a past that he thought he was done with, but isn't. A good part of the comic is flashbacks that slowly flesh out his past.

It's well-written, it's got good characters, and it takes the Crossed concept to its highest level. It's a good comic. And if you're going to reject it because of a juvenile obsession with not touching "edgy" material, you're honestly missing out.

Plainly put, if you're ever going to read Crossed, read Wish You Were Here.

Inhuman.

No-one has ever heard of it, which makes it all the more amazing.

If your webcomic hasn't updated in a while, save that shit, kids. It's liable to up and disappear forever one day.

Yeah, I'm one of those people. Let me explain.

>Seems a lot of people were upset that it the action scenes were less common

First of all, this is a bullshit, self-serving argument. My main complaint is that shit just doesn't HAPPEN. Granted, it's been a long time since I read it, but it kicked off very strong. Mysterious illness, impending doom, people setting themselves up for survival. I thought that looked pretty exciting.

And then it fast-forwards to the result of that, years later. A minute handful people survive, magic has returned to the world, and apparently there are magic cats. I don't know what the fuck cats have to do with Nordic folklore, but there you go.

And after that point the comic spent MONTHS detailing the completely uninteresting social awkwardness of a bunch of cute-looking young people. I hate to say it, but it was a typical girls' comic. There's pages of them being socially awkward to each other, and even a bunch of pages dealing with sleeping on a fucking bench and getting away with it, because even after the fucking world ended and not even a million people survive, you can't sleep on a fucking bench in a railway station.

And throughout that, is the constant hinting that something very ominous is going on. Electric fences to keep demons out, not being allowed to look out the window, magic spells, etc. I just couldn't take it. It's a slice of life comic with a very interesting setting that it outright refuses to show! If I wanted people being cute, I'd just pick up any one of the dozens of college roommates comics with nonsensical names. Maybe the one with the tranny, that /co/ seems to love so much.

Unsounded moves. Ashley Cope pays meticulous attention to her pacing, and shit is continually happening in that comic.

Maybe SSSS became more interesting in the time that I didn't read it. But what it showed in its early pages just wasn't very interesting, frankly.

I love sci-fi. my biggest complaint with the genre in webcomics is that the comics that keep running tend to have atrocious art (Freefall, Schlock Mercenary, etc.) and the ones that don't tend to die or go on hiatus (Intrepid Crew, Outsider, etc.)

I've heard Spacetrawler is good, in a Futurama kind of way. I've never read it, but it ran from 2010 to 2013, so there's not much of it.

Man, we really need a proper reviewing site again. The one I used to use was The Webcomic Overlook, but it died years ago.

As someone who read for what seems like much longer than you before giving up on SSSS, here's what we know:

The monsters are the Infected from the mysterious illness. It turn people and most animals into horrifying Kronenberg abominations. The whole Cat thing is based on the fact that Cats are immune to the virus, and are trained as guides to pick up on the presence of the monsters before they're already on top of you. The shamanism aspect seems to be based on the same illness, as the Mage character seems to be able to pick up on the presence of the infected in his sleep. I could be wrong, as I haven't touched the comic since they killed that infected Dog thing. See, the problem with this comic, to me, is not the pacing. It's the characters. There's this incredibly interesting premise and setting with all this wonderful nordic mythological inspiration, and the characters ruin it, because they're a bunch of fucking imbeciles.

Not even your standard Zombie Movie Protagonist kind of stupid, where they make bad decisions to advance the plot in a way that creates tension. No, this is a kind of stupid where it doesn't even serve the plot. The characters and their interactions with one another just don't make any kind of sense. Every now and then there's a grain of genuinely interesting characterization, like how the red-headed soldier woman sleeps next to her motion tracker, or the skinny shaman kid's prophetic dreams, but then the fucking blonde-haired guy who lights shit on fire or whatever the fuck open's his mouth and all interest drains from me.

It's a shame. SSSS has the making of something truly great, if only it's writing was as strong as its worldbuilding.
