I still don't get why the fans of the old expanded universe are so upset. Star Wars Rebels is pretty much a direct continuation of the old shit. There are so many references you can barely count them. If Disney hadn't announced the canon-split and if Rebels had still aired the exact same way it actually did, absolutely nobody would have noticed that anything was out of the ordinary. I'm not even sure the series contradicts anything from Legends.

I think the trouble is that with stupid EU shit, say lighsaber-whips for instance, you can always shrug it off as ''Nah, that's dumb, it's not canon." and completely ignore it without, for lack of a better term, any consequence or any hard resistance except for die-hard fans of that particular bit of EU. But when it's put into the show like this, it canonizes it, it makes a thing that could otherwise be shrugged off as a 'legend' or a 'tall tale' completely carved in stone.
