It's a generation defining story about a guy realising he needs to get his shit together to be a decent human being, using fantasy elements to display his escapist desires and refusal to take things seriously. Also, it's awesome.

Its simply not that compelling anon. It's a pretty fun story about 20 something year old asshole not a philosophical treatise. Its way too shallow to be called a "generation defining story"

But I promise you for a number of 20 something assholes, they looked at this comic and saw themselves in it and it resonated.
I've met people who had a great time of their life just dicking around, not really doing much but used Scott Pilgrim as a reminder that you do have to get it together eventually. It's not the biggest thing in the world but for some people it was the world.
its a fun little series about a world that runs kind of like a game and that has wide appeal
the characters are cute and i like the jokes
also the movie has an all star cast
