ITT: the worst episode of (insert cartoon here)

Pic related. Despite the Grade A chubby chaser masturbatory fuel that is the Love God himself, this was also the episode that made Mabel absolutely irredeemable in my eyes. Weirdmageddon was just the olive on top of that shit sandwich.
>>
That's not Roadside Attraction
>>
Little dipper pissed me the fuck off. It's the shit short guys have to deal with every day, and it's treated like it's just le meems XD!

In fact, they even blame the shorter guy because he was genuinely better than a woman at something. What a better way to deal with it than bullying him relentlessly over it.

>B-but they put quotes around "better" surely kids who totally don't bully short guys couldn't possibly misinterpret that!

Being short means you won't have a fulfilling romantic life. We don't need bullying, especially from our escapism, because of it.

Anon, that isn't weirdmageddon 2. Maybe its not the worst episode overall, but its pretty much where you realized that the payoff was nonexistent.
>>
>>82486814
Yeah I agree with this actually. I was so hype and the way they handled a bunch of shit in that episode. I realized I'd end the series feeling sort of dissapointed right then. Especially when it came to Dipper and Mabel's relationship.

Weirdmageddon was amazingly bad when you consider it in context of A Tale of Two Stans and general Twins-Stans parallel. It also pissed away any chance to have anything truly interesting in design, but with that I can live.

I liked this epiosde. I liked seeing Robbie and Tambry get together. Its a cute couple.

I like the moral lesson that Mabel learned. About not trying to play God, not interfering in the lives of others, and often times, things just work themselves out in the end.
>>
>>82491084
But they only hooked up because of the chems.
>>
>>82491084
The mindset behind the ending was probably more in terms of "We aren't snapping back on our love potion plot, so subversive" rather than any kind of moral stance but the fact how shallow Mabel's rationale was and how she prevailed still is grating.
>>
>>82482417
>whenever gf guys are brought up its always only the shotacons, fat chasers, and bill fangirls

>>
>>82491121
I assume the drugs wore out and they actually did find out they liked each other in the end. I liked this ending more than an ending where Mabel fixes things by making Robbie and Tambry break up.

I think the lesson to be learned here is "let sleeping dogs lie." I liked how Mabel realized that she played God enough, and how the beautiful the relationship between Tambry and Robbie was. Things worked themselves out in the end with the group getting back together after Mabel decided to stop interfering and let sleeping dogs lie.
>>
>>82491256

I always found that episode really creepy. Robbie has been established to be a piece of shit that just so happens to wear dark clothes and be sort of gothy.

Tambry isn't really a bad person, she just has her nose in her phone, like lots of stupid kids.

It really just comes across that they slapped them together because their character models are vaguely similar.

Sock Opera is when I legitimately lost respect for Alex and this show in general.

overall I still liked GF, but when Mabel literally hesitated to give Bill the book over some fucking dipshit she just met, rather than saving her own blood, was just about the worst fucking thing this show had done. They really fucked up.

Still, GF is at least a 7.5/10 imo
>>
>>82485477
>>82490559
>>82490677
The show had a lot of what seemed to be emasculating moments and ideas but I really think that comes from the fact that Dipper is based on Alex and that self deprecation is considered a safe go to for comedy. It probably would've come across worse if the opposite happened and Alex projected a bunch of masculine traits onto his self insert.

I think Mabel's problems also stem from the fact that she was based on Alex's sister. It seems like he desperately wanted Mabel to come across as lovable and quirky but because he's so close to his sister, and thus Mabel, he can't see the forest for the trees.

And so we get a bunch of moments where Mabel shits on Dipper or Mabel acting incredibly self centered but Dipper, and thus Alex, forgives her and moves on as if these reoccurring traits and behaviors don't reflect the real Mabel that everyone loves.
>>

I don't think that was the point, it just seemed like a humorous attempt to invert what we might expect from a Love God. Its like making your super strength character skinny

I definitely see what you mean but at least she did make in the right choice in the end though, that episode in the end became the only episode where Mabel was ever called out for her bullshit especially since her fucking up with the rift literally never even came up.

I think the idea was Mabel just always thought the Journal was stupid and worthless, she didn't see the big deal with handing it over for puppet guy, but her attitude towards other people's property does make her a bitch and her total indifference to all the supernatural shit and the books made her look kind of retarded. She always seemed to assume the weird shit would just sort itself out on its own no matter what she did

Maybe Mabel having no interest at all in the mysteries was a bad call. Like on Breaking Bad, Skyler doesn't want Walt to make and sell meth which in real world terms makes her totally understandable but in terms of the show it makes her a killjoy. Since you have characters actively against the protagonists moving the plot forward or even being involved in the show's plot.
>>
>>82499807
That makes sense.

>>82499846
>Maybe Mabel having no interest at all in the mysteries was a bad call.
That's a good point too. They weren't really the Mystery Twins we thought they were going to be, it was more like Mystery Boy and his selfish twin who everybody likes for some reason.

I honestly feel like Dipper and Pacifica's chemistry as mystery partners in NWM is better than anything Dipper and Mabel had. I think that goes back to what I said earlier about Mabel being too close to Alex for him to write her well instead of being overprotective of her. He doesn't seem to like Pacifica nearly as much so he was more conscious of her flaws and was able to play that off against Dipper who could be more assertive back and be justified. There's a give and take between them

Whereas Dipper acts more like a doormat to Mabel.
>>
And then ot became a stealth gravity falls general

You fucking zombies, die allready.

Nothing came of that stupid aug statue in the woods either.
>>
>>82499807

I liked a lot of things about Mabel as an overall concept and some of the execution but also really hated a lot of things about the way they handled her especially towards the end. I liked The Last Mabelcorn for example but the unicorn actually did have a good point about, for example, only doing good things to gratify your own ego. Mabel knew for example about the Bill situation and that he was a threat that she was supposed to be getting the unicorn hair to protect against, but she said herself she wasn't thinking about protecting her family but about herself seeming "pure of heart," and they had the unicorn just be an utter jerk the whole time instead of maybe Mabel learning that everything wasn't about her and caring about other people is part of being truly good.

Compare to Roadside Attraction where Dipper "learns a lesson" and has to apologize and is painted as this huge jerk when he didn't even do anything wrong. But the show acts like he was some kind of asshole. Meanwhile Mabel nearly destroys the universe later and no one ever mentions it.

And again unlike a lot of people on /co/ I actually do like Mabel but some of this shit was seriously weird and did no favors to her as a character.

Hirsch's lack of subtlety does him disservice.

He wanted to hammer down that Mabel is not selfish all the time and lingering on it made her look hesitant to save her brother from body snatchers.

In retrospect, I think it also seriously damaged Time Traveller's Pig because Mabel reaction was just too conspicuous to be sincere.

They are gonna go back that's what the "See you next summer!" and hat switch thing was about. I guess it won't matter though outside of people writing fanfiction unless Alex really does those comics he was talking about in Russia someday (I wouldn't hold my breath even if they do make GF comics that could be two or three decades from now for all we know, just in time for the eventual reboot to capitialize on childhood nostalgia).

How can you hate this face?
>>
>>82499395
You are retarded. The scene wouldn't work if she didn't hesitated . If her puppet show means nothing to her then the episode would mean nothing.

If Dipper in TTP didn't hesitated to help Mabel then he wouldn't learn anything.
>>
>>82503922
If this episode actually stuck, it would be nice (But it should be like this from the start)

But soon Mabel is back to her own tricks.
>>
>>82503996
Cartoons work that way. Stan should learn by now not to be greedy and selfish but that would ruin his character and kill alot of plots.
>>
>>82499395
Dipper is about as guilty of doing this as Mabel, but people only remember Mabel's moments

He not only hesitated but actively fought the idea of going trick-or-treating for the better part of an episode, even when he knew not doing so would get a bunch of children killed and eaten by a monster, because he didn't want to look childish to muh wendy and he couldn't go to the party to impress her
>>
>>82504092
Oh, and that's besides him ruining everything after a night of work by spilling his spaghetti when Wendy showed up. Only thing that fixed his fuck up was Soos showing up in exactly the right moment
>>
>>82504080
I'm pretty sure her selfishness was not intentional. I mean, Stan is greedy and selfish, but he's not venerated. Mabel's selfishness is something Hirsch wrote by accident and it just won't go away.

>>82504092
The difference is Dipper is mostly suffering and is shamed for it.

>>82482417

The worst episode was the one where Dipper brought in some weird leaves he found for Show and Tell and Bill stole the leaves because he forgot that it was Show and Tell day. So in the end Bill admitted what he'd done to the teacher and got an F, but he learned the importance of telling the truth. And then at the end the characters talked to the kids watching about why they should always tell the truth. It's so obvious that it only happened so Disney could write the show off as "educational programming."

Second worst was the drug episode where Mabel took up smoking and beer and crashed the family car with Waddles inside of it. Too preachy.
>>
>>82504092
Yeah because Dipper is always presented as being wrong for it. Mabel does this shit and we're supposed to give her a pass.
>>
>>82504176
Dipper's fuck ups are massively bigger than Mabel's, mostly because Mabel's are most often the subplot. Bringing the dead back to life and almost turning the whole town into a zombie apocalypse because he essentially wanted people to take him seriously or almost erasing the mind of his uncle because he saw something he was specifically instructed not to and didn't bother waiting for a proper explanation (and after already having been shown why it would be impossible for Bill to get into him) vs acting kind of childish because a unicorn told her she wasn't a good person or accidentally breaking up a group of friends because she used a love potion
>>
>>82504080
Stan did learn not to be greedy and selfish at the end though which is what his whole "sacrifice" was about. With Mabel it wasn't always obvious the writers knew she was coming off as selfish which was the issue I think. Characters having flaws isn't the problem but I'm not sure whether or not this was meant to be a flaw.
>>
>>82504288
There are less consequences for her, but I don't recall her ever being depicted as on the right
>>
>>82504383
So you didnt watch the show? Cause its literally all the time. Biggest example is Roadside Attraction but besides that whenever she should get called out it's swept away.
>>
>>82504312
/co/ does seem to forget Dipper is a pretty big dick a lot of the time and project its own sibling issues onto Mabel while over-identifying
>>
>>82504312
>almost erasing the mind of his uncle because he saw something he was specifically instructed not to
Care to remind me what was it?

Anyway, I don't really defend Dipper here, and I don't really criticize Mabel so much as I criticize her veneration. Mabel is put on pedestal and venerated even (especially) when she fucks up.

Dipper fucks up because he craves approval, sure. And he gets punished for it.

But Mabel's arrogance and desire to control people's life causes trouble and strangely it keeps being validated. From validating her as matchmaker to validating her desire to control life of her brother that ushered weirdmageddon.

And never did Mabel ever thought "Gosh, I promised Dipper something, I guess I have to not do what I want for once". One time she accidentally made sacrifice for Dipper she made sure it's undone.

>>
>>82504417
Dipper is also never called out per se, the plots just stem from him dealing with the consequences of his actions and as such you see him learning what he did wrong
>>
>>82504528
Are you kidding? He's called out all the time, he's always getting reprimanded either by the plot and his consequences or characters telling him straight up.
>>
>>82504493
Mabel with the love potion isn't validated. She's explicitly told why what she did is wrong and the love god is rightfully pissed at her trying to steal another of his potions. At the end he just goes away because he's tired of her shit. She and Dipper decide to not use the potion because they guess that it's only going to make things worse after they more or less sorted themselves out
>>
>>82504493
I do feel like the writers were antsy about showing its female characters as flawed sometimes outside of Pacifica who was originally meant as a 100% bad cardboard cut out strawman. Steven Universe does a much better job of this and really focuses on the flaws, weaknesses, and mistakes of its female characters.
>>
>>82504493

>>
>>82504597

Most of the time it's only by the plot itself though. It's rare for anyone to outright tell the twins "Okay, you fucked up". Mabel also gets called out a couple times by those terms

>>

Man, I still can't believe Mabel causing the apocalypse never even came up. And I don't think it was really her fault but the fact that a character can do that and then it's like it never happened is bizarre.

It was her fault. She didn't mean it, but
a) What she meant was pretty malicious
b) It was all brought fourth by her personality flaws

>Dipper what the fuck is wrong with you? Look at how miserable Mabel is you heartless bastard!
Dipper was using the time travel to prevent the girl she liked from hooking up with one of her friends, Mabel was using it to relive getting her pet for the first time. Dipper then succeeds and tries to make Mabel forget her pig. It's definitely a more selfish and malicious use of the time travel and that's why Dipper gets the short straw. However the whole episode was horribly written and both the twins acted terribly.
>Mabel what have you done! Oh wait never mind they're actually a great couple, good job.
More like
>Mabel uses a magic love potion on two people
>Mabel what have you done! Alright the love potion is still working fine so let's just leave this alone

I don't have a objection for this one

This was already a flaw in the show's writing as far back as A Tale of Two Stans, it was already clear how this was going to end and not something specific to Mabel

I agree with the context of how Mabel is treated in the show. It's perfectly okay for her to flirt with everyone Tom, Dick, and Harry, but when Dipper does it, he must learn a damned lesson.

>>82505035
>This was already a flaw in the show's writing as far back as A Tale of Two Stans, it was already clear how this was going to end and not something specific to Mabel
It could have been done fine. The show just had to make Mabel come to terms with Dipper leaving, only for him to realize afterward that he'd rather spend a few more years with her. Hell, that would even strengthen the theme they were going for, since Stan's problem was that he couldn't accept his brother leaving.
>>
>>82505191
I'm still more weirded by how it reflects on AToTS. In that episode Stan got mad that Ford would have life of his own, and broke him machine in his mad.
In Weirdmageddon Mabel got mad that Dipper would have life of his own and broke the world in her mad. Let's not get fixated in that Mabel actually bore malice in her actions, even if she was tricked into different malice.

So apparently the answer is to not have life of one's own, because this is what Ford did and Dipper didn't?

Since everyone is already talking about gravity falls, which were the best episodes?

I liked Irrational Treasure, Northwest Mansion Mystery (despite everyone being so far out of character they were probably doing astral projection) and The Legend Of The Gobblewonker the most. They were exactly what I wanted out of the show, lighthearted comedy with a dash of paranormal mystery I genuinely felt sad for McGucket then and was a tiny bit mad when Society of the Blind Eye ruined his character.
>>
>>82502653
I disliked that episode because it wasted 40 minutes telling backstory instead of doing interesting things with the frame. (Really, the only interesting moments in the episode was the last minute.)

Also I find it really distracting that Stan and Ford just sat down and splurged their whole backstory. Who would actually do that? Wouldn't their memories be emotionally charged? And even if they were willing to share it, wouldn't they have eventually argued about some point, like the whole Stan accidentally destroying the perpetual motion machine thing? I mean, come on.

My favorites (wouldn't say best, just the ones I liked the most):

NWHS - for the reasons everyone knows, the episode was pretty much perfect and had great characterization, action, emotions, set pieces, music, etc. great payoff for the Stan mystery.

NMM - the best stand alone episode, Dipper was at his most likable in this episode plus obviously very nice Pacifica development, how she had to save the day and make a meaningful choice was great, also very nice visually.

DaMvtF - did a great job exploring Mabel and Dipper's characters, the end and end credits were fantastic, super hype and very scary/tense, nice exploration of the show's themes.

SatRG - one of the funnier episodes, Giffany was a great MotW and nice parody unlike the D&D ep which felt halfhearted parody wise.

SO - Bill was his funniest in this episode and the animation for Bipper was brilliant, Mabel's play was great and Mabel realized her mistake and saved the day which was nice to see.

ItB - great MotW with great voicework, some of the creepiest visuals, very nice and heartfelt way to tie up the Wendy stuff too at the end.

Dreamscaperers and GR - Nice Silent Hill crossed with Psychonauts visuals in Stan's mind, great cliffhanger ending, GR was fun too.

There were others but these pop to mind first.

>Can you elaborate?

It's not that Dipper wasn't likable before, for me it's mostly just the contrast between the way he acts around Wendy and the way he acts around Pacifica in this episode.

He tends to be pretty selfish around Wendy and sort of a sneaky shit, like when she's crying over breaking up with Robbie and he's just trying to ask her out all excited. I get it he's a little kid and kids are selfish.

But in this episode for example, when Pacifica has her breakdown, although he has plenty of reason to hate her he sits down with her and comforts her and talks to her honestly.

I think you can see why many people started shipping Padippica after this and it is nice to see characters grow and change into better people.

Well this is because Mabel is based on Alex's sister and Wendy is Alex's waifu so he didn't want to portray either as flawed. With Pacifica she was supposed to be flawed as you pointed out and I think that made her more fun to watch in NWM than either Mabel or Wendy when Alex decided to make her more than just that cardboard cut out because he was aware of her flaws.

You're right that SU does a better job of this but at the same time it really has to since most of its central cast is female.

It could be unintended outcome at first, but
>Thompson getting ice in his pants on all fours, followed by 2 shirtless scenes with a close up belly shot
>multiple scenes of Soos shirtless, one in his briefs, one in boxers, playing with his belly on camera, and is shirtless in a Burt Reynolds pose
>Stan playing with his belly with animal cracker, 2 scenes in a jacuzzi
>2 shirtless scenes of Sheriff Blubs with Durland and the OBVIOUS gay undertones that'll make Free Iwatobi Gay Swimming Club look tastefully subtle and nuanced
>Love God being bisexual
>finding out Soos is based on his chubby classmate in his college days
It is definitely a classic case of being friends with a person you have the hots for and then finding out they're straight so you became good friends with them instead and hope you see them in swim attire, followed by making a healthy outlet for your transgressions by either jacking off or making a show around your fetish.

TL;DR: Alex Hirsch is a closet chubby chaser

-lucky enough to have Disney ask him to pitch a show

I guess they've seen Soos and the Real Girl now.

>In that episode Stan got mad that Ford would have life of his own, and broke him machine in his mad.

I think the issue there was that breaking the machine was an accident and Stan got some hugely disproportionate retribution with his whole life being ruined and getting kick out of the house for basically, really, nothing. Meanwhile not only was what Mabel accidentally did much, much worse (one guy not getting his absolute first choice school right away, big fucking whup, vs. destroying the universe) what she TRYING to do WAS still bad (trying to trap everyone in a time bubble without their consent) AND it was never ever even mentioned, it all comes across as seeming fucked up, Stan made his incredibly tiny by comparison mistake as a kid, too.

Did you watch the newest episode yet? It continues on the Red Throne story, but it was actually pretty good

What puzzled me more is why Stanford couldn't get into whatever college he wanted if he could build a perpetual motion machine on high school
>>
>>82523950

The silliness of it being a cartoon basically (since in reality this would be all over the news, not something nobody ever really looks into, and Ford might just be able to skip any further schooling altogether it'd be such a huge deal). In real life it's not unusual for someone who went to an iffy undergrad to go to a brand name/prestige grad school either. Which is what it seems eventually happened with Ford. Him still being pissed at Stan was just him being a petty, shallow nitwit/jackass.

I did science fairs as a kid and won some stuff and not checking your shit right before the fair starts and again right before the judges come around is retarded, anyway.

What is that?

I'm not disputing this, although it's worth considering that it looked like Stan did it on purpose and he didn't really defend himself.

It's a licensed polystone replica of the Bill statue that Disney is selling. TMoGF just released a bunch of info about a new GF merchandising campaign on his twitter.

I hate it when characters could resolve some huge drama by just talking to each other for five minutes and they don't.
>>
>>82524925
Sort of, but this fit thematically into tragedy. Stan couldn't get over his entitlement and ruined everything. Ford helped too, but it was Stan's flaw that started it.

Weirdmageddon just completely fucked up.

No, I'd say that ranking list is pretty accurate. It's just this board that has messed up opinions.

To who? I don't hate imdb but like any self-selecting Internet poll of course it's not going to draw a balanced sampling of everyone. People who really love or really hate something and people trying to be contrary will vote.

Imdb ratings give a general idea of what people think. It's not irrelevant just because you disagree with some of the ratings.
