WAS it a failure?

On one hand, yeah no one saw it.

On the other, the game is selling like gangbusters, and for the first time in years, people seem to be giving a shit about Ratchet and Clank.

It might be worth it to make the Sly Cooper movie just to see if it revitalizes interest in THAT franchise.
>>
>>82479051
If you make a movie for $12 million and spend another $12 million marketing it and only receive 4 or 5 million back, that's still a loss. And you can tell Sony was angling some sort of "Sony video game Cinematic Universe" with Jak and Daxter references in it.

Honestly, if it were up to me, I'd just shill out for a Netflix series or a show on Nickelodeon. Cheaper to produce.

I doubt the references were anything but just that. If they were seriously going all in for a cinematic universe, it would've made more sense to have Jak and Daxter be the next movie.

A TV show sounds like the better way to go, but maybe Sony still has cold feet after the LAST time they tried that.

They TRIED to revitalize the Sly Cooper franchise like two years ago and it was basically the PPG reboot.

Insomniac has been releasing Ratchet & Clank games on a regular basis for 15 years, the movie didn't revive it by any means.

As far as the movie goes it's completely average. It's pretty to look at but the story is basic, the characters are nothing and most of the humor falls completely flat, but there are one or two actual great jokes.
Overall I don't feel like I wasted my time or money on it but I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

It'll probably break even in the long run.

And meanwhile, the game is the fastest selling in franchise history and has been the #1 seller in the UK for two straight weeks. If we can consider the film as a glorified ad campaign that in the long run pays for itself. the movie may be a failure but the enterprise as a whole can be taken as quite successful.

Doug Tennapel worked on this. The Earthworm Jim guy.

Hundreds of people saw this happening. And no one said anything.
>>
>>82481982
I haven't seen the movie, but I saw the scene where Nefarious screwed over Drek and randomly becomes the main villain, and it just feels unnecessary. There's just no reason for it except that Nefarious is the most popular villain, especially since Drek worked alone in the first game.
>>
>>82482843
Are you implying that Earthworm Jim wasn't a great series?
>>
>>82483210
No, it was.

Mostly I'm wondering how the guy that did that looked at this and said, "yep, this is acceptable."
>>
>>82483059
Drek was screwed over in general. In both the movie and game any shred of menace he had in the original game was stripped away (a large part admittedly has to do with replacing Kevin Michael Richardson) and was reduced to being a complete joke villain.
>>
>>82482395
not exactly warcraft's numbers in people familiar with it, and even that movie seems a stretch

>>
>>82483059
>>82484902
If I could rewrite the movie, I'd replace Cora with Helga, Cora is bland as fuck, at least with Helga you could have some funny banter between her and Qwark, considering his hard-on for her and her sensual powers of seduction.
Drek still gets voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson and is still sinister as fuck. Nefarious doesn't betray him, it's more when Drek is defeated, Nefarious acts like a failsafe to make sure shit gets fucked up for everyone anyway. That's mostly so we could have had a Drek bossfight in the final level of the game as well as the Qwark and Nefarious ones.
Ratchet is a dick at the beginning like in the original game, none of this cliche "wide-eyed youth has his dreams come true" his Han Solo style "self-serving pragmatist learns empathy" development was much better.
>>
>>82479051
I won't say like gang busters but it is selling well. What matters is if it made profit, depending on the Development time and marketing. it might need to sell over two million to be profitable.

Of course even if it isn't it won't matter, Sony makes it's money from subscription fees now.
>>
>>82479051
So they movie end up LITERALLY being an advertisement basically?
>>
>>82485779
> it might need to sell over two million to be profitable.

I doubt it. This game appears to be made well, but well made on the cheap.. 2/3rds of the cinematics are either straight from the mlovie or just 3 characters standing without moving and just talking to each other. Not to mention all but one of the weapons a are from previous games so that couldn't have been too hard to implement.

I enjoyed the game but no surprise that the devs didn't do anything significant with the formula. I'll complain but I was happy to be playing a new game on the PS4.

I listen to this game podcast and one episode they did on Jet Grind Radio. During the episode it was brought up whether it would be good or not if there was a new JGR game. One of the hosts argued that a new game would be unnecessary because the game has gone far as it can go. JGR is the best example of that very specific formula and improvements couldn't be made without changing its framework considerably (arguable).

I think that's a problem I have with R+C. Ever since Going Commando, most of the games have just been a remix of that game. There's not much you can do with that formula. All of their spin-offs like Full Frontal have felt like gimmicks at best.
>>
>>82487181
I'd argue that it's on the same level of quality as the first game. It does some things better, while some things are worse to the point where the two are in perfect balance. Meaning if you enjoyed R&C1, you'll enjoy the remake, but not for all the same reasons you enjoyed the original.

>Ever since Going Commando
Try Up Your Arsenal. Going Commando made a lot of major new additions and refinements to the series (especially strafing), but Up Your Arsenal refined most of the rough edges plus introduced the Lock-Strafe control scheme, AKA the most optimal control scheme for any R&C game where it's available.

Does the game follow the same problem that the ps3 games do, where they are incredibly short and have less weapons as they go on?
>>
>>82487789
Out of all the Ratchets, I think this one suffers from the less weapons as you go on the least. All the weapons keep up a level of effectiveness even late game.

As for the length, I think it's pretty good. It's not incredibly shorts. It's just behind UYA in length, and I consider UYA's length to be pretty good.
>>
>>82487789
Yes and no, but the game is $40 and it has roughly 2/3rds the levels as a result.

>>
>>82488111
Wait wasn't the bouncer in the first game?
>>
>>82488076
Untrue. The Heavy Lancer and N90 Hurricane were useful weapons in a pinch by the endgame due to their high rate of fire. Even when you pump up all the rate of fire upgrades into the Magma Combuster in either Tools of Destruction or R&C 2016 it's still slow and barely does any real damage.

>>82488186
The Bouncer was in Going Commando. Also >>82488111 is wrong since he forgot that the Devastator, Tesla Claw, Morph-o-Ray and (to a lesser extent) the Glove of Doom existed in the first game.

I forgot about the Walloper, another great weapon. But you are using the Devestator wrong, you have to fire it whenever a green target appears on the enemy. And once you get the Gold Devestator even if you miss you'll probably hit since that ricochet is insane.
>>
Here's my real question tho........

..........Sheepinator.....or Morph-o-Ray?....
>>
>>82488531
Sheepinator. Sheep are funnier
>>
>>82488448
Those didn't get introduced until GC, but they were pretty great. A bunch of those tossed out plus the Kilinoids plus the Tesla Barrier plus the Plasma Coil = instant victory for any arena battle in either GC or UYA.

>>82488531
The original Sheepinator from Going Commando was the worst morphing weapon in the entire series. The Sheepinator in R&C 2016 (which evolves into the Goatinator) is one of the best and most overpowered morphing weapons in the series.

Unlike the movie the game had destruction physics. Seriously, during that entire battle on Kerwan, in the movie every single time a warbot was blasted it just toppled over. In the game whenever you fought warbots or any other similar enemies they'd explode into pieces once you've dealt the finishing blow.

>>82495078
I do agree that was pretty annoying. I know Insomniac was helping to make the movie too, but they couldn't have been THAT understaffed on animators. Rainmaker's one job was to animate the damned thing themselves while Insomniac worked on the game.

Insomniac think they're slick with that too.

>We need to save money on this game to justify the $40 price tag, what do we do?

Anytime it's a cutscene not from the movie involving a character from the movie, like Qwark or Elaris or Nefarious we do a full in engine, well directed scene. Any other cutscenes involving characters like skid mcmarx or the blarg brain doctor we do a cheap mannequin version of a cutscene.

>Brillliant!
>>
>>82492725

>>
Basically, the movie based off the bagme sucked but the game based off the movie based off the game was very good?

Also, it sounded like what they did with the movie is exactly what bootleggers did when they made the Final Fantasy X movie. Play through the entire game, record the footage, cut out the game bits and stitch together the cut scenes.
>>
>>82485604
I'd take Nefarious out entirely. I'd give Drek the same role as the original game with the same reveal that he was polluting his own worlds for a profit. I'd give Victor more of a design based on the robot Lt from the first game, and while I love Stallone, go back to the military schtick and get R Lee Ermey for the voice. Also, make Victor more prominent to make up for no Nefarious.
>>
I was replaying Going Commando recently and it got me thinking about how much of a shithole the Bogon Galaxy is. >Ratchet is more of a dick and is less compliant with Quark's idiocy.
>Take Nefarious out completely.
>Have Clank's origins changed to where Gadgetron manufactures police bots (That all look like Cronk and Zephyr) that patrol the galaxy, and have themes of ethics explored with this, and have Clank as a defect. Maybe barrow some of the plot elements from Chappie.
>Have Max Apogee appear as a retired-explorer-turned head of Robotics at Gadgetron foreshadowing Talwyn.

I hardly even think of any of the devices beyond "Zurkon and the Groovitron used to be one of those". Such a useless feature in a game where you're encouraged to level your real weapons whenever you can, glad they scrapped it after one game.

Elaris should be added in-between Courtney and Vendra. Corra should be after Angela.

Corra was a nothing character.
At least Elaris was voiced by Based Rosario Dawson and was actually cute af.

I guess it was too much to ask for a grovatron scene where this plays:

Is Rosario Dawson is that based? I think so. She might be the most based, more based than based God

Rosario is pretty cool and also pretty pretty

I always knew Rosario Dawson was based. When I first saw Kids I said, "That girl having unprotected sex? Yeah, she's something special..."

Her name was Hydrogirl.I was actually disappointed she has never been mentioned or seen in a game in the series since.
Evidently, she was supposed to have a larger role in Deadlocked where team darkstar was supposed to rescue her but was cut.

When I first saw pictures of Cora I thought "she looks like a new Talwyn, hopefully she's as cute as she looks". And then her voice actress phones in every single line of dialog.

The common complaint is that it's formulaic as fuck. What I find neat is that nobody says bad things in what makes a movie bad, just that it's boring as fuck
>>
TOkk my kids to it today. They fell asleep and I was bored out of my mind.
There were a few chuckle worthy moments but ultimately I could not have given fewer fucks about what was on screen and the kids got antsy.
They sat through Jungle Book slack jawed and engrossed.
