It's a decent movie, but by the time I watched it I had seen Muppet Treasure Island so much that I couldn't help but compare the two. MPI is much better IMO.

If you took out the robot it would be a top tier disney movie.

I 'like' Treasure Planet (nostalgia), but it's one of those hit or miss movies Disney tried to do when they were appealing to the male demographic. Disney has the female demographic locked down, but for boys, they kept experimenting with stuff and making it EXTREME! (Hence why Tarzan looks like he's surfing on vines and Jim looks like he's wind sailing). Eventually, this all culminated with Atlantis the Lost Empire and this.

When they realized they couldn't do it, they just said "Fuck it" and bought Marvel Studios.
>>
>>82478944
This CAN'T be real
>>
>>82476330
Treasure Planet was awful. Great visuals and a cool setting, but most of the characters were awful, their arcs were mostly awful as well, the comic relief was literally Hunchback-tier movie-ruining and in the story was a hollow and uninspired adaptation, which was a goddamn crime when considering how much they could have done with that setting.
>>
>>82479341
How were the arcs awful? Jim grew up, the dog guy got brave, the captain became emotionally open, and Silver gained some responsibility. Nix the le funny robot and keep Mr Arrow, and you have top tier Disney
>>
>>82479418
>Jim grew up
He turned from a shitty stereotypical teenager into a generic disney hero. It
s development, but it's not exactly inspired.

>the dog guy got brave, the captain became emotionally open
There was no real development here. They basically just threw a switch on their personalities the moment they hit the planet.

>and Silver gained some responsibility
Silver is the only character I actually liked all through the movie. Sure he was a shitbag at times, but his arc was definitely the best one in the movie. No sudden changes because the plot calls for it, but a believable transition from a selfish shitbag to a less selfish shitbag with a heart. Arrow was decent as well but died to soon to make a lasting impression, and Amelia started off good but was reduced to a useless damsel and love interest bait after she got shot.

It was definitely a great setting. I have some issues with how literally they transplanted some ideas (space pirates sailing the space ocean by using the space wind and breathing the salty space air), but the setting definitely had a lot more potential than what they did with it in the movie.
