He wasn't able to keep Oksana alive after talking Rhino down, he let Lizard just walk away with a few dozen people after Lizard ate Billy Connors and getting his shit kicked in, and Gauntlet led up to Grim Hunt, wherein Spidey failed to save Maddie. Gauntlet was easily my favorite time for Amazing Spider-Man, but Peter fucked up hard during these issues.

It's not really fair, no, but the fact still remains that he failed, Reguardless of outside interface or not, Spidey has been beating the odds since day one. It's just with Gauntlet he wasn't able to, yes everything was set in motion by Karven's family, but it was Spidey who played like a pawn on til he realized that he was actually a Knight on the board.
Also, OP, Thor: God of Thunder, the whole God Butcher arc is basically one giant shit storm that Thor (with the help of Loki and Kang) caused.

Empowered is actually a better "superheroes are shitty" mileu actually. I was dissapointed with The Boys because I expected Operators led by a Frank Castle type keeping supers in check but instead he just gave them powers too.
The subplot of Emp's boyfriend being anti supers terrorist badass normies against powered threats is what I was looking for.

For a book where a guy fucks a cup of coffee, The Boys has a lot of surprisingly human moments. There's a moment where Annie insults a guy whose been bullying here since the beginning of the book. She feels good at first, but then she feels bad because she knows that being a jerk just isn't in her nature.
And literally every stupid shit ends up becoming important in the end. Even the guy that jizzes blood under Hughie's doorstep

There's a pretty, semi-famous scifi example in the Known Space universe, I think it was. Where a largely pacifist, weaponless humanity is attacked by warlike aliens, who think them easy pickings. It doesn't take the aliens long to realize the humans rather powerful ships can just point their engines at them and obliterate them.
