Quit being so nostalgic, adventure time had a different feel back then because we had different writers. The show itself is still good, major things I've noticed is an increase in complexity of their animation. That took away the simplistic vibe but it's no reason to stop watching, and storyline provides episodes that actually mean something. I would rather have the writers experiment and make their episodes more planned out, with interactions that feel more genuine, they stay consistently brain-dead like in the earlier seasons. You would have just gotten bored with it, there is only so much you can do in the land of Ooo, before things become stale. I do miss the songs though.Sugar come back please

I can only assume you don't read. Almost every princess has a knight servant/bodyguard who says that they don't need the hero and he'll be enough, but is immediately proven wrong when some bad guys attack and later keked by the hero. And at the end he either almost literally melts into the background or is used by the villain to try and kill the hero who he understandably hates by that point for utterly humiliating him and making him obsolete. It's a fucking cliche that you can see a mile away.

Finn's a hero for the sake of being a hero, not for any reward.
He just loves doing good and adventuring. he does it for fun to the point where he nearly got addicted to the Dungeon Train.
As he's grown up, he's still retained that desire to do good, but now he just has other desires as well that occasionally come up to match it, but never really surpass it outside of his depressed spell post FP.
He's the swarthy hero that will never settle down and stop adventuring. Like Billy really.
Billy had Canyon, but they broke up at some point too.
In fact, his girlfriend was a water elemental... Never put that correlation together really.

If you take whole 7 seasons of AT in perspective - FPxF is a romantic centerpiece, it's referenced in lots and lots of episodes, it's possibly one of the main arcs in show, dealing with romance in puberty.
And so far it is absolutely not a comfortable arc to be in, and this drives /co/ up the wall. Many are in denial about this, that's why you have so many differently worded complaints.

I don't think its that, its just that its weird to see Finn, a character who was established as altruistic to the core, gets shit on over and over and over again. Each individual instance makes sense in the context but taken as a whole it put the show on a weird trajectory that moved it away from some of its more charming elements.
Take Breezy for instance. I thought it was an interesting idea for an episode but I can't say I enjoyed myself watching it. I appreciate the attempts at experimentation but experimentation doesn't necessarily lead to an improved product.

Its an interesting arc but I think its unnecessarily comfortable. SU deals with romance and discomfort at times but ultimately doesn't stray from the elements that made it popular and it all feels very purposeful. AT seemed to wander aimlessly into this experimental style of theirs. Certain sections of the show feel thematically connected and there are still good episodes but taken as a whole I feel like the series didn't, and maybe still doesn't, know what it wants to be.

But that said the whole thing was written in a very humiliating way for Finn. They made a bottom of the barrel comedic relief character outsmart and outperform the hero and they executed it in a way that was more humiliating than comedic. The whole thing was done at Finn's expense.

The main reason I was annoyed at the execution of the FP arc was that I had hoped that the Finn/FP relationship might put the shipping drama stuff on the back burner. Have FP provide a stable relationship that only occasionally comes into the spotlight to let the show move on a bit from that theme.
It could still provide lessons for Finn but instead of having Finn fail miserably and get humiliated at very turn he might learn from mistakes that ultimately allow the relationship to grow in a positive direction.
