>On Midnighter

>To start things off, the first and most important thing to say is, I don’t already know how this ends. I thought I did — but I don’t. I’ve said it before, but working on MIDNIGHTER has been an honor. Getting to take a character that helped me when I was younger and boost the signal to a new generation has been an honor. And honestly, to beat the odds with a character people that people doubted, or didn’t know what to expect from, has been an honor.

>From the time issue one hit, I knew we had something special. Messages would come to me, either through social media, or meetings at conventions — “Midnighter gave me the strength to come out.” “Midnighter helped my friend come out.” “I’ve been waiting for a book that spoke to my life for decades — my whole life.”

>Midnighter, in all his Bauhaus violent glory, was doing what I hoped—— bringing strength.

.Because I hoped from the start that even though he’s not perfect, and not a role model in all ways, that that could be precisely why we love him, and why we identify with him.

>Midnighter is a very human character, filtered through a superhero lens. Like so many of us, he’s had bad things happen to him in his past, and just like we must, he’s finding a way to move past it and make a life. He’s not defined by his past, he’s defined by his present. It doesn’t haunt him. Despite being abused, experimented on, and kidnapped, he finds joy.

>And whatever we face in life, that is, I think, or hope, what we’re looking for.
>>
>>82466012
I like his dynamic with Deadshot, but I doubt anyone could put a bomb in him (especially with Apollo around), and the chances of him volunteering to work with the likes of Harley and Lawton are null.
>>
>>82466059
>but I doubt anyone could put a bomb in him
Didn't that legit happen in Ennis' run? He'd work with Waller.
>>
>>82466058
>I couldn’t be prouder of what we created with MIDNIGHTER – “we” being the kick-ass people that worked together to make the book a reality: ACO, especially, made the book his own and brought his work to a whole different level for our own gay badass who lives by action movie rules. But we wouldn’t have gotten there without support from Alec Morgan, Stephen Mooney, Hugo Petrus, Jeromy Cox, Romulo Fajardo Jr, Jared Fletcher, Tom Napolitano, Mark Doyle, Chris Conroy, Dave Wielgosz, Alex Antone, Brittany Holzherr, Michael Shelling and Clark Bull.

>And what did we do? We gave you the baddest man in the DCU, and he was a gay man that didn’t care what anyone thought about him. He was 100% true to himself at all times. He was the guy that even other heroes in the DCU would see in a fight and say “damn, that was cool.” He was a fighter — but not a mindless one. He was someone who could be incredibly caring and just as incredibly violent if you crossed him or the people he cared about.

>And most of all, finally, for people who had maybe been waiting their whole lives, he was all these things, and he was gay. And that wasn’t his sole characterization or his only definition, but for once, the hero in the driver’s seat, the hero leading the book, got to be gay. And that’s powerful. The man that never lets you down, that hears you when no one else will, the hero that doesn’t want to be an urban legend, but instead a reality for anyone that hurts others — he got to be gay.
>>
>>82466072
Yeah, but that involved time-traveling and shit, so his teammates weren't able to help him.
>>
>>82466075
>And most of all, finally, for people who had maybe been waiting their whole lives, he was all these things, and he was gay. And that wasn’t his sole characterization or his only definition, but for once, the hero in the driver’s seat, the hero leading the book, got to be gay. And that’s powerful. The man that never lets you down, that hears you when no one else will, the hero that doesn’t want to be an urban legend, but instead a reality for anyone that hurts others — he got to be gay.

>Midnighter was the one that terrorized the terrorizers. He put fear in the stomachs of those who traffic in fear on a daily basis. He was the ultimate check for people who cross the line — and that competent, strong, unwavering fighter got to be gay. And he got the respect. He got to win the day.

>And I am so happy that got to happen, so proud of it. Because queer people, non-binary people, people of any minority — we can be anything. We can be the heroes, we can win the day, we can be strong, and we don’t have to live to anyone’s expectations but out own.

>And that’s what made MIDNIGHTER special. Yes, if you ask me, we had one of the best damn action books on the shelves. A book that crossed boundaries and brought you moments never before seen in comics. Hell, we killed someone with a porterhouse steak, and stuck Midnighter in a bullet and shot him into space!

>But beneath the blockbuster action, there is an icon that says without question: only you define yourself, no matter who you are, and absolute belief in that is all you need to be strong as hell.

>Thank you so much for reading...

I love that despite being a sadistic bastard, Middy is literally the most well-adjusted hero out there, what with having civilian friends he constantly hangs out with that know all about what he does and generally having a normal social life without any complications that could come with having a secret identity, all because he just doesn't give a fuck.

I don't think he can emotionally connect with anyone currently. He isn't as well together and emotionally stable as Middy.

He does, but you've gotta admit that Frank and most other vigilantes are kind of emotionally constipated. By contrast, Middy's rather open about what he feels, be it anger towards enemies or love towards friends.

My favorite thing about him is that he literally doesn't give a fuck about what other people think about him and that's what allows him to be so open with his emotions.
Like compare how Bats gets prissy about being flown by Supes and how Middy allows Apollo to carry him bridal style in front of their enemies. Absolutely no fucks given. >>82465876

It was a wild ride, I still regret not buying this in my LCS, but I probably would have if they actually stocked the damn thing.

So what do you guys hope to see in Middy's future now that his series is over with?
>>
>>82467966
In the long run? Another series.
But I'm glad they'll at least be using him in Nightwing, so he won't completely fall into obscurity.
But damn if this issue didn't make me want more Apollo. He really need to appear in the Superfamily books.
>>
>>82467966
Midnighter and Apollo book
>>
>>82467966
I have like this really generic pitch but it could work.
Authority villains attack Justice League, half of the League is incapacitated. Dick tells Batman to ask help of Middy and Apollo. They both help League and build Authority from the ground up. At the end Waller is asked by America to sanction the government led team called Authority. They're the failsafe if League should ever fail and they would keep Wildstorm fucks in check. Could swap America for UN honestly.
Also I want Seeley and Orlando to write this and Hitch to draw it.
>>
>>82468035
I'd like that too, but given how bad the numbers for Midnighter are I strongly doubt that will ever happen.
>>
>>82467966
I hope he will find Christ and abandon his sinful way of the faggot.
>>
>>82468147
>I hope he will find Christ
This reminds me, wasn't Jesus suppose to join the Authority at one point? I think I recall some writer saying he wanted to do that but it never happened.

>>

>>
>>82465902
Fuck Clark and Lois, this is the best DC couple right here.

I'd give anything to see a little Jenny Quantum show up over in Super Sons.
>>
>>82469136
I miss Jenny Sparks, she's one of my favorite comic characters ever. Was never really a fan of Quantum, probably because I'm not that into kid characters.
>>
>>82469136
>see a little Jenny Quantum show up over in Super Sons
She's not really close with Middy and Apollo in the DC universe though.
>>
>>82468264
I think the idea was Christ comes back and he's super pissed off at everything then the Authority calm him down, something happens with the Magician, I think he and Christ fight, then either Magician leaves and Christ joins or Authority just has two Magician-level reality warpers.
>>
>>82469136
>>82469191
>>82469219
It's hard to write a good Jenny Quantum, since she's basically the Franklin Richards of the DC Universe.
Also, yeah, Middy genuinely tried to kill her, I doubt he's suddenly looking into adopting the 11 year-old now.
>>
>>82468882
That's what I'm thinking but it's the only book announced that he's doing so far.
Didn't Didio or someone say that the announced Rebirth titles aren't all they have lined up?

>>82469191
Oh man, I never dreamed we'd see Sparks again.
I'd take her over Quantum, Spark's power set was a lot more fun than "Oh, quantum mumble-science and problem goes away".

>>82469219
Then we can forget Quantum ever existed and just roll with Jenny Sparks.
>>
>>82469276
This sounds both retarded and amazing at the same time.
>>
>>82469382
He's also writing a story for the American Vampire Anthology, but yeah, so far that's all they've announced.
I'm sure there'll be more titles later on. For example, I'm surprised they haven't announced a World's Finest/Batman+Superman book from the get-go. That title always gets high sales.

>>
>>82468649
Lots of people who don't read comics consider them peak human.
I suppose original Middy was sorta in that league strength wise (but strongly superhuman resilience and tactical wise) but current Middy pulls shit like slicing through lamp posts with a kick.

Read Stormwatch volume 2 then Authority by Ellis, Hitch and Millar (ghost written by Morrison), Quitely. Then read Midnighter mini series by Ennis. There is lots of stuff in between by Brubaker, Giffen, DnA but I don't know if it's good enough or not.
>>
>>82470804
Brubaker's was okay in my opinion, the rest not that interesting.
But personally, Orlando's Middy is the best take on the character since Ellis.
>>
>>82470804

If you have nothing better to do, here's pretty much all their appearances. Midnighter and Apollo are introduced in Stormwatch V2 issue 4, but I would recommend the first volume too. Ellis is great.

Personally I'd recommend everything Ellis, Millar and Brubaker runs, Kev stuff and Midnighter 1-9. Definitely avoid Midnighter 10-20 and the New52 Stormwatch series.
>>
>>82470893
I don't know, I don't think I've laughed at anything in comics as hard as I did at the Prometheus reveal, I'd give that arc an A+ just for that.
>>
>>82470893
Isn't that how villains work with how Ellis wrote them? They're the big bads and then get defeated in seconds. Remember New World Order or whatever it was called in Stormwatch 37-40?

>his personality is terrible
4u

I think he's a very fun character, even if he's kind of a dick he's still loveable in his own way. He enjoys the superhero life, doesn't angst about the terrible shit that happened in his past, talks shit while fighting, all while still being caring with the people he likes. I don't know what to tell you, I love violent action books and violent anti-heroes, so this series is right up my alley.
>>
/co/ I hope he just doesn't make any appearance outside of the books edited by Doyle. If he appears in Red Hood only to get shit on by Jason, I'll murder Lobdell.
>>82471205
He's just a no nonsense bastard and he doesn't brood all day. Better than Shit Hood or any other wankfest characters.
>>
>>82471357
>he's still loveable in his own way.
People keep saying that but no one seems to have any examples of Midnighter being anything but a self-serving asshole.

>>82471302
he's an asshole. that's and being gay make up the totality of his character.

>>82471286
He's not fun, he's just smug and overpowered. Deadpool is fun because he jokes around and is actually a friendly person. Midnighter is not.
>>
>>82471743
oh no, Red Hood's also terrible, but that doesn't make Midnighter appealing.
>>
>>82471767
4u. Not everyone here has autism.
>>
>>82471810
I mean, non-autists don't usually have the fantasy of just being confident and socially abled enough to be an asshole.

Midnighter also jokes around and is friendly. I get it, you don't like the character. Doesn't mean that others can't find him entertaining and loveable.
>>
>>82471745
>He's not fun, he's just smug and overpowered. Deadpool is fun because he jokes around and is actually a friendly person. Midnighter is not.
Yeah enjoy your lol so random humor, at least Midnighter has well placed darkish sort of humor. And if you actually think his whole character is just being gay, you honestly didn't read it past the tagline.
>>
>>82472005
I didn't say his whole character is being gay. I said his whole character is being gay AND an asshole.

>>82471886
context?
>>
>>82472059
He saved a little girl who was being trafficked.

You don't even read the comic and you come here to bitch about why others like the character? I don't get you.

Oh, so you haven't actually ready anything with Midnighter in it. Okay.

If I'm wrong then please tell me which books/issues you've read that have Midnighter in them.
>>
>>82472059
>context?
Oh okay so you've never actually read anything, never mind then, carry on your shitposting.
>>
>>82472166
I read the entirety of "The Authority" and most of "grayson". he was always an asshole, always.

Anon's probably just trolling.
>>

Yes, its impossible for someone to have missed a single example of a character.
>>
>>82472141
Yeah that's just how Ellis writes. Damn I want to storytime Stormwatch and Authority now.

Normally that would make sense if the anon wasn't asking for context for an image which came from the series in this storytime.

It's obvious he (you?) doesn't like Midnighter and isn't looking to change his mind about the character. So all he's doing is asking people why they do like Middy and then bitches about their reasons. If he was really trying to understand why others like Midnighter then he would at least try reading the Orlando series.
>>

This is my first midnighter comic. Is everyone in this comic gay?
>>
>>82473707
No, Just Middy and Apollo. The guys in later pages are Middy's friends so I guess they count as well.
>>
>>82473773
Gotcha. But man, whatever makes people metahuman must also influence sexuality, because i feel like a lot more than 10% of superheroes are gay these days.

Sure.

He also saves Grayson's ass twice in his own book and solves all their problems in Eternal without getting anything in return.
>>
>>82473707
Bar owner definitely isn't. Middy's female friend probably isn't.
>>
>>82473853

Everyone knows that getting super computers implanted on your brain makes you gay.

Isn't she fat in Suicide Squad Rebirth?

Since Spyral will be gone, do you guys think Waller and Helena will make a good book? I think this Helena Bertinelli in would do better in Suicide Squad than joining Birds of Prey.
>>
>>82475405
I'm disappointed she's joining Birds of Prey, that's such a downgrade for her. She deserves better than playing second fiddle to a group of teenagers and a dumbified Babs.
>>
>>82465887
A carefree grinning Middy is probably my favorite panel from this issue.
I'm bummed the run's over, but this was a good send-off.

That was a neat finale. I will miss Middy.

The art is strange, though. A little different from previous ACO/Petrus previous issues.

Worst case scenario: pops up for really bad nonsensical cameos in Nightwing that fuck with the narrative, like him jumping in that last issue of Grayson (but earlier issues were fine) and B&RE.

Best case scenario: pulls work with the Skawd occasionally, mentors Cullen, makes an occasional appearance with the Batfam.

I trust Seeley to handle him better than the stand-in writers.
Anyway, he'll be in Nightwing #1

Apollo a cute.
He was great this issue, I really hope we see more of him in Rebirth, he deserves some spotlight for a change.
>>
>>82465882
I actually thought he WAS shooting blood from his eyes for a sec, especially because of Midnighter's dialog page in before this.

>>
>>82470410
No, he was not. In the first arc of the Authority he casually slaughters Superhumans who were durable enough to fly through buildings at supersonic speeds without getting hurt. He has always been extremely powerful. You are wrong, just admit it and read some Midnighter comics.

>Millar (ghost written by Morrison)
Can this meme die? Millar has written good comics. Not every good Millar comic is written secretly by Morrison. The run is covered in Millar stuff.
>Obsession with sex
>Extreme vulgarity
>Villains are all rapists
>The rogue doctor's villain origin was that he had a microdick
>the Iron Man pastiche turns out to be gay for Midnighter

>>
>>82487882

>>
>>82487882

>>
>>82487882
How is Millar's Empress? It's getting a movie. Is it good or Millar?
>>
>>82492138
consider the quality of other Millar comics turned into movies and draw conclusions from there
>>
>>82487882
Millar has written good stuff, but Morrison confirmed that he covered for Millar on Authority because the latter was ill and couldn't finish the script at that time.
>>
>>82495966
>>
>>82493309
So let me get this straight
The second vol of authority was written by Morrison pretending to be Millar? That must be why it's edgy but at the same time it get pompous as fuck
>>
>>82482340
>Apollo is such a cuck. He could find Middy fucking a random guy in his bed and even then he would act like a faithful wife.
Except that time he did find out that Middy slept with another guy and punched him through a wall. But that was a shit book anyway.
>>
>>82465905

Don't forget in BvS he takes Supes to an empty part of the city.... and then kites Doomsday through a populated area to bring him back to the spear.
>>
>>82465912
What a based fucking run. I'm so sad it's ending, but also so grateful that Orlando and ACO delivered and I was there for it. I'm a huge Midnighter fan and this was the realest shit.
>>
Is this really the end of Midnighter and Apollo? Will they ever see the light of day in rebirth that aren't cameos?
>>
>>82500422
Hopefully Orlando gets to write Authority.
>>
>>82498491
It was only one issue towards the end that Morrison wrote. The vast majority of that run is pure Millar
>>
>>82500422
Hopefully the trades start to sell when people finally catch on to how good this book is.
Cameos might help as well, especially if Apollo starts appearing in Superbooks.
