Hm...that actually seems kinda possible. The gems seem rather exhausted whenever the keep up big fusions for a while (e.g. Sugilite). And during Fusion Cuisine, after Alexandrite fell apart there was this split second we could see Ruby and Sapphire although they fused together as Garnet again in an instant. They used Alexandrite only for a short and rather passive moment there, so who knows after such intense moment against Malachite Ruby and Sapphire might not be able to immediately fuse back again.
