Here, take a look at this: There's two heart beats, and the picture makes it look like the normal state of things is that only one heart is beating at a time. This panel marks the point at which the opossum's heart started beating again and the king's shut down once more (to remove his own magical field from the equation and prevent it from feeding the tumor).
I suspect they simply sedate the king and switch over to his heart powering both bodies during transit, probably waiting through the period it takes for the null field to die away. The "withdrawal" they mention is possibly the withdrawal of null-field energy in their combined vascular systems - the king was having a delayed reaction to that, which possibly flashed back through the link and knocked the opossum out - heck, we saw how Poppy's heart started beating ultra-loud and then conked out when she was absorbing dragon magic, the opossum in the bubble may have been put into arrest by the king's heart starting up and setting off a surge of high-level magic from the tumor. His "withdrawal" may also have been withdrawal of the sedative.

Probably more than a few seconds, I should think, as they'd need to unhook the previous one and ship him/her out of the magical zone. But the addendum makes me think of something: We know gamba can teleport, we've seen everyone's favourite dour-faced swordspossum do it. The post also says they can produce the same antimagic signal, and that both signals can be created at varying levels. We already know that they have some kind of drugs to boost the magical signal (booster tabs) - Friedrich uses them in combat. What if they also have drugs to boost/dampen the antimagic signal? So they tilt the gamba one way, teleport, then tilt it back the other way, ready to be used as a blood filter.
Or even better, what if they've developed a similar drug to dampen the antimagic signal in standard opossums and that's how they get one through a teleport/wormhole? That could be an excellent plot point - it's been developed entirely for the king's own use and kept secret, but opossums could benefit from it greatly as it would potentially enable them to receive magical healing treatments and use magical items, though without the magical signal generator brain component they could still never use magic themselves.
That sheep will later start the revolution.
