It's fucking party time!.

>Any kid who rushed home to watch G.I. Joe and Transformers after school probably had M.A.S.K. on their TV and in their toy boxes, too. And this fall, superpowered masks and transforming vehicles are revving up pop culture again with a high-octane hero's origin story.

>Writer Brandon Easton and artist Tony Vargas are putting a Fast and Furious spin on the mid-1980s franchise with a new M.A.S.K. comic book debuting from IDW.

>Also in the works is a M.A.S.K. feature film as part of Paramount Pictures’ Hasbro Cinematic Universe, but according to Easton, the comic won’t be a cookie-cutter retread of the TV show where Matt Trakker’s good guys in M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) battled Miles Mayhem’s antagonistic organization V.E.N.O.M. (Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem) to a catchy soundtrack.

>“This is a M.A.S.K. for the 21st century with a diverse team of specialists who are chosen for a top-secret program with a painful learning curve,” the writer says. “Ultimately, each participant will have to choose a side — and no matter which side they choose, the consequences will be great.”

>There will be throwbacks — Vargas says they’ve kept “color combinations and vital identifiable components” relating to key players. Plus, expect modernized takes on vehicles like Thunderhawk, a Camaro that became a jet plane back in the day, and motorcycle-turned-helicopter Condor.

>Yet Easton promises M.A.S.K. will look very different in some ways. “We won't be going too grim, gritty or dark. However you're not going to see a teenage kid riding a cowardly robot across the battlefield.”
>>
>>82412274
>This Matt Trakker is a cross between Elon Musk and Idris Elba — Easton describes him as “an engineering genius and intellectual bad boy who has been in search of stability since the loss of his father at an early age.” Matt’s had a troubled adolescence, and as an adult, “he's given one last chance at redemption: going through the M.A.S.K. boot camp.”

>And instead of being a bumbling villain, Miles "Mayhem" Manheim is a master manipulator, brilliant military strategist and control freak whose plans to rule the world are extremely close to fruition.

>“V.E.N.O.M. will be a true force. They don't lose often nor do they accept defeat with grace,” says Easton, promising that the group and its leader will be deadlier than portrayed in the past.

>Matt and Miles have almost a father-son bond, the writer adds, but when Matt learns what the older man has done for power, “it provides the catalyst for Matt to stop searching for a ‘role model’ and figure out what it means to follow his own heart and soul.”

>The supporting cast also reflects 21st-century occupations and motivations, but will have some familiarity. Easton’s giving V.E.N.O.M. henchman Sly Rax a totally new identity, and he thinks readers will like the two female leads, villainess Vanessa Warfield and heroine Gloria Baker. The latter is one of several characters getting mask upgrades — Gloria’s is capable of “a bunch of cool holographic hacker-interface things,” says Vargas.

>The new M.A.S.K. on the whole speaks to the current zeitgeist of constant upgrades and need for immediate gratification, according to Easton.

>“Imagine if your car, motorcycle, SUV or yacht could change into a more powerful vehicle complete with state-of-the-art weapons systems and other cutting-edge technology,” the writer says. “The possibilities are as fun as they are disastrous.”

Literally posted this in the last "comics that you want to see" thread like a couple weeks ago. I explicitly said "a M.A.S.K. comic from IDW".

>>82412274
>>82412292
Sounds like they're going for a reboot instead of a straight adaptation. I can deal with either. I'll definitely look for this when it comes out.

>MASK
Those are clearly helmets.

So did I, now all we need is a fucking IDW Centurions comic and I can die happy

Cover is by Tommy Lee Edwards.

M.A.S.K. stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, duh.

They fight the Vicious Evil Network Of Mayhem.

I'd probably still read it.

>Not M.A.S.Q.U.E.
>>
>>82412250
>M.A.S.K.
My brother and I were the only people we ever met who knew what M.A.S.K. was.
I saw all the '80s reboots happening and thought bitterly that I would never see this day.
Blogposting aside, how are Easton and Vargas?
Vargas' Rot and Ruin doesn't look that good, but wikipedia tells me Easton was nominated for an Eisner for best one-shot/single issue.

TMNT and Mirconauts are good and I've also heard positive things about Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Star Trek (the latter of which I would probably read if I wasn't so utterly against the J.J. Abrams reboot)

>IDW publishes comics based on characters from the 80s
>Marvel publishes comics based on characters from the 60s
>DC publishes comics based on characters from the 30s
>somehow it's IDW who's the "nostalgia company" and not Marvel/DC

>IDW comics only exist because of TV shows
>Marvel comics only exist because of movies
>DC comics only exist because of movies
>somehow IDW is dismissed as "licensed comics" and Marvel/DC aren't
>>

>DC comics only exist because of movies
I'm not so sure about this.
>>
>>82413908
>>somehow IDW is dismissed as "licensed comics"
Most of its current and upcoming lineup is.
>>
>>82413908
I mean, it's not like they're terrible at it though. Transformers is one of my favorite series and I've been putting that on my pull list since 2012.
>>
>>82413974
>I read Starscream Gets Away With Everything and Gay Space Robots In Outer Space
Just kidding, they're both good, MTMTE's better, and I can't believe MTMTE and SotW finale just got delayed.
>>
>>82413945
Marvel and DC are licensed comics. They are literally nothing more than movie tie-in merchandise. Deal with it.

IDW publishes (or has published) TMNT, G.I. Joe, Disney reprints, Popeye, Garfield, Little Nemo, Micronauts, and (soon to be) ROM. ALL of which started as comics (only Disney characters that didn't originate in the comics are Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and Pete, the rest of their supporting casts are from the comics).

IDW is LESS reliant on bringing in fans of other mediums than Marvel or DC are. Like half their lineup or more is about REVIVING OLD COMICS FOR THE ORIGINAL FANS. How many Marvel/DC books are currently made for the people that read comics before the /tv/ adaptations? The answer is NONE, you faggots.
>>
>>82414094
I agree with you but Clark & Lois is explicitly for long time comic fans, not the moviegoers.
Likewise, that Clark becoming Nu52's main Superman post-Rebirth is for long term fans, not the movie crowd.
Marvel hasn't been successful with any of their comics for comic fans and none of them have had much impact on the core universe, though.
>>
>>82414094
IDW has some creator-owned shit though (a few has been adapted to other media such as their first comic, 30 Days of Night).
>>
>>82413754
Theor comics are mostly good so I don’t give a shit, cry some more.

Come on guys. INHUMANOIDS! You know you wanna!

Not that I'm entirely against the idea, but wouldn't it just be like the numerous Godzilla books IDW already has?
>>
>>82415719

Not really, no.
>>
sweet now all I need is my sci-fi/fantasy fix with a Thundarr the Barbarian book

Since Warner and Disney seem content to off load a good bit of their properties onto IDW, it makes me wonder why IDW hasn't just been given He-Man
>>
>>82416053

Because that's Mattel.

Also, WB doesn't own He-Man, Classic Media (and, by extension, Dreamworks) does.
>>
>>82416053
>it makes me wonder why IDW hasn't just been given He-Man
Hasbro made really big eyes and IDW said no to mattel.
>>
And DC is already making a He-Man comic, although no one seems to know or care.

The FCBD ROM issue's only a few days away now.

What do people think of Micronauts so far?

Just OK. I'll keep reading it, but it's nothing special (yet).

Never
G. I. Joe never got big in Germany, nor Europe in general I think, so everybody had M. A. S. K.
