Howard's Arc Reactor and Unknown Element saved his life in the first two Iron Man movies. Plus, Howard (though he never outright said that he loved Tony) confessed that he had faith in his son's intellect and character.
Tony's biggest regret regarding Howard (as shown in CW) is that he never told his dad that he loved him.
He assumedly had a better relationship with his mother, which is whyseeing her perish in such a horrific away drives him over the edge.
