Man, I always liked this story. Its a prime example of the human spirit. Its something so basic anyone can appreciate it. Shame it'd just get crucified for being "racist" if it ever got brought up again.

Who the fuck thinks the story of John fucking Henry is racist?

Whoever they are, they can go fuck themselves.

He was one of my first role models.
>>
>>82406252
Tumblr would probably hate it because literally everything is racist. /pol/ would hate it because black people. /co/ would like it until it got popular. And the mainstream would probably condemn it because the only portrayal of black people they want is Beyonce-tier "empowerment," because who better to look up to than famous rich people who have nothing in common with you except skin color (assuming you're black). Historically accurate, uplifting, and interesting pieces of art are not really appreciated.

It reduces the worth of a black man to how much work he can accomplish on a railroad. Sounds pretty fucking racist to me.
I don't believe that at all, but I guarantee you'd see that on some shitty tumblr blog or Salon.com if this was released today.

Frozen can suck a fat cock.
That being said, it's all very generic and samey looking, I get much more entranced looking at the 2D concept art. All it does is make me sad because if it wasn't for retarded americlap consumers we'd have more movies in SUPERIOR 2D ANIMATION.

>He thinks I don't read comics.

I wouldn't have as strong an opinion if I hadn't invested months into this shit. Comics are a really versatile medium with absolutely shit mainstream writers. The quality of the writing in every big cape event is worse than the fucking Star Wars Prequels. It's all stupid to the point of offensive, built around brand recognition. And shit like race/rape/whatever-is-edgy-atm is always well beyond their ability to depict (without fucking up horribly).

I fucking love comics, but mainsteam cape written worse than fucking reality TV and that image is a perfect example of those hacks' work. When amazing shit like Transmetropolitan is out there, I'm amazed the quality control is so fucked.
>>
>>82410500

>KKK hood

Moron, people put bags over the heads of people they're going to hang, and he was clearly being hanged, judging by the noose.

It also gives him the look of an executioner

There's no thought behind it, it's just a rip off from Hooded Justice frokm watchman and it's a completely retarded decision.

They also used those hoods in Spanish Catholic ceremonies. But Henry isn't in Spain. He's in the States in the 1870s or some shit, while the KKK was active. And a burning fucking cross? A noose around his neck? Plenty of comic writers are hardcore right wing, but I honestly think this was just abject stupidity. But if you know your history, it comes across as a weird, racist point. Hacks of this level can't get work in film or TV anymore, you'd never see anything that dumb unless it was offensive on purpose.

John Henry's story is a complete mess. Thr only thing anyone agrees on is that there was a strong black man named John who fought against a machine.

Some stories make it a friendly contest, others have it with higher stakes. Some have him die at the end, others have him live.

So I'm not the only one that thinks this would make a cool spin-off comic right?
>>
>>82406596
Yes, he actually ran into a bear that wanted his delicous seeds and then kiled the damn thing with a knife, wrote a letter but given his hands were mangled he wrote the knife is a real 'ka bar' which lead to the legendary Kabar name. Also he adopted the orphan bear cub and named it Teddy, hence the start of the teddy bear.
>>
>>82411547
I actually watched this in school.
>>
>>82420623
>Also he adopted the orphan bear cub and named it Teddy, hence the start of the teddy bear.
That's not true. It was named after the president Theodore Roosevelt. It was inspired from a story of the president when he went bear hunting with some friends but didn't manage to hunt a single thing. Feeling bad his friends captured a bear cub and told him to kill it but Theodore refused saying that shit ain't sportsmanlike.

I can tell which class everyone is except for the newsman and the Cowboy

Is the Cowboy supposed to be Scout and newsman supposed to be Engineer?

The cowboy is Billy the Kid and the other guy Nikola Tesla. So yes, that's exactly right.

I just don't get why they are all bundled. internet streaming is the PERFECT medium for throwing random short films out there, its not a DVD.

Disney's short is really good. You can see that a lot of the people Disney hires are genuine artists, and the stuff only gets tampered with when executives and focus groups get into the picture. There is a picture book illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats that I really like, too.

>Generic CGI Shit
I miss 2D too, but come on.

>>82411120
I think Project S.T.E.A.M. is pretty cool but I hate what they did to John Henry.
>>
Since feature films are more profitable in CGI Disney should make more traditional 2D shorts like this. Like a huge series of folk tales and fairy tales drawn in the classic Disney style. Folk tales like John Henry, mythology from different cultures, religious stories, the original versions of fairy tales they've already done as features, etc. That'd be so dope.
>>
>>82415613
Classic Man vs Technology stories like that do have a bit of a deeper theme. Afterall, John Henry is wearing clothes likely spun from a machine and wielding a tool, if a primitive one. He's not punching the stakes into the ground with his fists. The important bit is that machine he faces is automated. Something built and constructed using math and knowledge far removed from the day to day experiences of the working man.

It's just as much about the man on the ground versus the pencil pusher out of town. The experience of a craftsman, as lowly as that craft may be, versus the generalized, interchangeable automation. A similar story could be spun out of a man who built him self custom robo parts and who spent his whole life tinkering with his own machines for specific tasks and a general automaton made by a committee across the country.

It probably wouldn't be as drammatic of a story. The story does rely on a more contrasting image of a man and a hammer and a complicated machine of industry.

>It's tragic though
Well obviously.
But the idea that the pinnacle of human ability remains unmatched by any artificial machine is uplifting. Even if that human limit is ephemeral - reached reached only in a few fleeting moments of incredible willpower and inspiration - it is still there as something for others to strive for, a monument to human determination and strength.

There is a little bit of John Henry in every person who can claim to be a real master of their craft, from athletes and artists to engineers and scientists.
>>
>>82430892
Unmatched
Henry was barely better than it and he killed himself beating it.
At the end of the day the machine still works and it works at a output of 0.999 John Henry's
The machine was better.
>>
>>82433476
The machine was more powerful. The man was better.

The railroad company was using its resources put the men out of work so they wouldn't have to give them the land that they promised to give them. And before you say "that's the free market" remember that there is no way a former slave would be able to make or buy a steam engine. The deck was stacked against him. Only the rich were getting richer.
The rich and powerful were trying to exploit the laborers out of what they earned.
John gave his life to ensure that this didn't happen. It's a bittersweet story.

I don't care if that's not how it was said to have happened. I'm just going by the Disney short.
>>
>>82433476
In the long run, yes, the machine is better. What John Henry represents is the idea that the human "genius", whether physical or mental, is unique and can't be replicated by artificial things like machines.

Depending on how you look at it John Henry's death is a either pyrrhic victory or a romanticized failure.
>>
>>82434198
>is unique and can't be replicated by artificial things like machines.
But it was replaced
Because John Henry was dead
>>
>>82434745
Anon don't be obtuse.
The point isn't that it's more practical to use the engine, the point is the Machine will never have the spark that makes us human.

>explain the difference
Even if the machine replaces John Henry, it hasn't replicated him or his feat.
It's like if Bucky becomes Captain America then he has replaced Steve, but he hasn't BECOME Steve.

>All that matters is who's still standing and it wasn't John Henry.
But he DID beat the steam drill. That it cost him his life is part of the fable, part of the emotional symbolism. Does the idea of a noble sacrifice - of truly giving everything you have to your work - not resonate with you?
>>
>>82435388
>it hasn't replicated him or his feat.
No just a feat almost as impressive a infinite amount of times.
>It's like if Bucky becomes Captain America then he has replaced Steve, but he hasn't BECOME Steve.
The machine's purpose wasn't to become John Henry though simply to prove it's better at his job which it is because in order for to beat it he had to work himself to death whereas the machine can keep it's pace forever.
>But he DID beat the steam drill.
Once
>Does the idea of a noble sacrifice - of truly giving everything you have to your work - not resonate with you?
Sure it does but be that as it may the claim of the machine was that it was better at the job and ultimately it was.
If I could offer you two guns before you are shipped off to a warzone, one that is a normal gun that can be fire for as many times as you have ammo and another that I assure you is very powerful but can only ever be fired once and after that it will be broken forever which would you say is the better weapon? Which would you entrust your life to?
John Henry's victory was hollow.
>>
>>82435222
>How Sappy
Yes that's the point.
And obviously it isn't all that matters since if he hadn't done it all the workers would've been dicked out of their claims.
So it's both a moral and literal victory despite John dying and y'know the theme of his tale.
>>82435644
Obviously it wasn't. It lost the competition.
>>
>>82435824
>Obviously it wasn't. It lost the competition.
But not the war
>>
>>82435644
>>82435891
What point are you trying to make? Nobody is claiming that the machine is worse at its job than John Henry in the long run. We're just explaining the symbolism behind what John Henry did and why it's worthy of being a folk tale.
>>
>>82435891
But he absolutely did.
His motive was to win his coworkers claims. He accomplished that.
