If they are smart, they'll play out Bruce's killing and extreme brutality in BvS as something that only increases the compassion he has toward his foes.
Make clear that he had a code for most of his "career", but having a Robin die and everything in Metropolis happen in a short time brought him to his darkest side. Have him go back to his rules, and be determined to redeem himself, and use that as reinforcement for believing that people can change and be better.
That belief is fundamental for the character, I think. He's a man defined by his will and the choices he made when faced with tragedy. A man so determined in becoming something more has to believe that others can to, and that by stopping them he's helping them in some way too. Of course, BvS's Batman might have been too brutal for that to stick, even if he had reasons to be that way at that time.
