Something happens to Homer to make him seriously question his life and he has a semi mental breakdown, while in a psychiatric hospital, Karl from the early seasons visits him to help gain him more confidence in himself, meanwhile, as Homer was in the hospital, the power plant was taking over Hank Scorpio who successfully managed to overthrow the east coast and wanted to expand his empire. Makes Homer his second in command while Karl becomes the new Smithers, to thank him Homer invites Karl out to a Christmas play with the family. Mr Burns and Smithers are either dead or went into hiding in another country.

it was just old man moes wacky stories about his buddy homer and his family.
Days before Christmas, Santa's Little Helper gets sick/injured because Homer wasn't watching him like he was supposed to. In order to cheer everyone up and hide his own guilt he tries to make the perfect Christmas but it backfires and the family is angry at him. He gets hammered at Moe's and ends up breaking into the vet's office to cry over Santa's Little Helper, who talks to him and tells him how he can make it up to the rest of the family. On Christmas day the Simpsons wake to find Homer has bought therm each a cheap gas station gift, but also written a letter that explains how each gift represents what he loves about each of them. They all forgive him and drive out to the vet to see their dog, who is expected to make a full recovery.
Flanders somehow ends up accidentally killing the entire Simpsons family. Goes insane with guilt, even going as far as to make dakimuras of them in their own house after buying it and having conversations with them of pre-recorded voice messages of certain catch phrases.

The series ends with the citizens of Springfield realizing that their town is a pocket dimension that doesn't allow them to age, and that they will be in this repeating hell forever. The Simpsons convince the omnipotent being who runs the town, a talking fox, to let Springfield move on.
It takes some convincing, but the fox allows Springfield to become a normal town, where people can age normally and no one is unsure of the town's location. The episode ends with Homer singing a cover of "My Way" by Frank Sinatra, with the entire town joining in as back up singers.
The team creates any other episode where Homer really sees getting drunk is a problem after losing his job and unable to be rehired. It's a slow episode of depressing images that ends with a Marge saying, "We'll find a way out of this one."
