Do you guys think Bendis even tries anymore? Is he so guaranteed to get good writing jobs that he can just shoot out shit and not care in the slightest if his output is good?

Seriously, I think the last time Bendis was consistently good was...what? Late USM? Maybe Dark Avengers?

He and Slott both should move to editorial positions. They have decent ideas, but their books are just unbearable now.
>>
>>82377106

And leave the writing to who? One of these shitters that can't sell a book?
>>
>>82377140
Seems like most of their books are legacy characters that sell in spite of the writers not because of them.

It's been a while, I don't remember the writing specifically as much as I do the general premise being fun as fuck.

No. Obviously not. I think he puts a little effort into Miles' book but that's pretty much it.

Current Spider-man is good so far. The problem is that the editorial doesn't let him write Miles at all when he's finally getting interesting. They keep forcing him to stupid crossover events like United We Stand or that Galactus shit. And he was in the middle of the storyline when someone decided "you know what? we changed our minds, we are going to destroy the ultimate universe too".

I can't blame anyone but himself for the rest of his work, but it's clear he's trying with Miles. He just has terrible luck.
>>
>>82377778
>Current Spider-man is good so far.
I dropped it after last issue. The entire book was about Miles getting grounded by his abuela. It would've been funny/endearing if that lasted a few pages at most, but in perfect Bendis fashion, it'll probably be a 12 issue arc of nothing.
>>
>>82376724

Daredevil. USM became shit around the time it started to ship two or three times a month and never recovered. DA was shit from the start and a poor imitation of Ellis' Thunderbolts.
>>
>>82377140
Slott doesn't sell shit. Look at his SS. Spider-Man sells. And it ain't selling that well currently.

>>

The problem with Bendis and even his Spider-man is that it reads really slow every month, but in the long run the pacing pays off and it's a way faster read.
The original USM had like 5 issues before Peter actually wore the costume and yet is a very praised run.

If it works great then it works great.

Not only that. He probably wrote the best Spider-man run ever with Peter. It had all the elements that make Spider-man appealing while avoiding its pitfalls.

Trying to read or watch any other Spider-man feels so watered down in comparison.
>>
>>82376982
What did he mean by this?
>>
>>82379012
>Not only that. He probably wrote the best Spider-man run ever with Peter.
No Lee and Ditko did that decades ago and it will never be topped. There is lots of stuff post Lee/Ditko that's miles better than Bendis.
>>

No, fucking Bendis. Bendis wrote the best Spider-Man.

I want these fucking idiots who've never read anything older than themselves to leave.
>>
>>82379058
Bitch please. Spider-man didn't even get that good until Romita Sr became part of the team.

But also Bendis had all the advantages of having Spider-man mythos fleshed out enough to cover lots of cool storylines in his style. It's distilled Spider-man, complete Spider-man. Stan Lee's Spider-man was the very important seed of what Bendis' Spider-man could become, which is the best one..

Yes. Just face the facts. Just because you have a hateboner for current Bendis doesn't take away the merits of Ultimate Spider-man.

Faggot don't throw names out there, it wasn't even Romita Sr's best work. Lee/Ditko is definitive because it gave us all the iconic characters and their best interpretation.

I just can't stand Ditko's art. How is this by any standard good art?
Am I the pleb? Look at his unbalanced head shape, at that ear. His skull is a mess. This is what a newbie artist looks like, not a professional. He would never get hired by modern standards, he only got the job because it was the 60s and comicbooks were the lowest cheapest form of entertainment.
>>

Stop feeling like you need to defend and like it, simply because it's an older artstyle, and probably the style that drew you into comics.

It's objectively mediocre art, at fucking best,

Some fair points here, but like Kirby, what Ditko lacked in raw draftsmanship he made up for in style and atmosphere.
If you want to see what people like about Ditko, see past his technical limitations,
consider artists like the Hernandez Brothers, Paolo Rivera, Darwyn Cooke, and Chris Samnee.

Bendis doesn't hate Moon Knight, he wrote a solo of him.

Not being a previous fan of Moon Knight I honestly had a blast with Bendis. Regardless of how the character is supposed to be, it was a very entertaining story.
I feel sorry for the fans though.

I love Bendis, I tell all my friends to buy stories from Bendis. But they always buy something else, and complain later about how bad it was. And then I let them read some of my books, and they say "where can I get some more good stories like this?" And then I drop some knowledge on them. I take them to school. They read a few, and they buy some, and they come back saying "More. I need more Bendis!" It feels pretty great, I'm not going to lie. It's like spreading the word of God

If he doesn't try then he hasn't been trying for a long time.

Honestly the problem is that most writers just lose it after a long time. Bendis has been writing comics for Marvel nonstop for 16 years, he's exhausted all of his stories, everyone does. It happened to Claremont on the X-Men, it happened to PAD to an extent on Hulk and X-Factor and it's happened to Bendis. Given how bad Siege was, I'd say he burned out around there. That would've been a good time for him to step away from comics for a bit.
>>
>>82380429
It's not so much that writers run out of stories, but comparing them to their seminal work is never fair. Most writers have one or two amazing books and the rest can be just good but will never measure up. All the famous writers had this. But that doesn't mean they can't be challenged again, they just need to take a step back and explore something new.

So yes, I agree, Bendis should quit for a couple years, do something completely different, do some soul searching or whatever heavy drugs and then come back to writing.
>>
>>82376704

>Current Spider-man is good so far
>Blackheart defeats all avengers and scarlet witch
>runs away after a single venom blast
>Comes back, makes Peter jump
>Peter, the amazing spider-man, in his new bullet proof suit, lands on his head and knocks himself out
>Miles proceeds to beat up blackheart with three venom blasts and throws a mail box at him
>Hypocritical (but overall good) stance on black spider-man
>Stereotypical hispanic Grandma
This new run is his worst yet.

>bendis is the adam sandler of comics
>>
>>82376940
He's right. Lowe is the Guardians of the Galaxy editor and there's zero coherence or continuity between current books. They even contradicts with others. Why is he not fired already is beyond me.
>>
>>82379115
USM only works because Bendis was able to crib from dozens of existing stories instead of making it up wholesale, which he's proved time and again he sucks at.

It's a good book and re/introduced a lot of people to Peter but it's hardly original and certainly not definitive.
>>
>>82383850
Bendis won Eisners for Alias, Powers, Daredevil, and yes, USM.
>>
>>82378681
Its a mini series Bendis did, has nothing to do with the Secret WARS series.
Gabrielle Dell Otto fully painted the interior art.
>>

>Eisners
but why
>>
>>82384154
For being a mediocre white male.
>>
>>82384154
Here's what he was up against those years
2002:
Brian Azzarello, 100 Bullets, Hellblazer (DC/Vertigo)
Brian Michael Bendis, Powers (Image); Alias, Daredevil, Ultimate Spider-Man (Marvel) *
Grant Morrison, FF 1234, New X-Men (Marvel)
Greg Rucka, Queen & Country (Oni); Detective Comics (DC)
Mark Waid, Ruse (CrossGen)

2003:
Brian Michael Bendis, for Powers (Image); Alias, Daredevil, Ultimate Spider-Man (Marvel) *
Ed Brubaker, for Catwoman, Detective Comics, Gotham Central (DC)
Bruce Jones, for Incredible Hulk (Marvel)
Greg Rucka, for Queen & Country (Oni) Gotham Central, Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia (DC)
Bill Willingham, for Fables (DC/Vertigo)

They looked at all those and said "Yep we're going with Bendis." Though honestly Bruce Jones is the only one there I'd consider unquestionably worse.
>>
>>82384224
Grant should've one the first one, Brubaker the second.
>>
>>82377026
>Seriously, I think the last time Bendis was consistently good was...what? Late USM?
Late USM was the death of Peter Parker and the introduction of Miles Morales. So no. Absolutely not good.

>but why

We're talking about Brian Michael Bendis. The man who brings unforgettable moments like this in practically every book he writes. do you even have to ask? He wakes up and shits gold
>>
>>82377778
>Current Spider-man is good so far.
Fucking no. No.

>>82378668
Bendis is more famous than you. He has more fans than you. He has more money than you. His legacy will outlast yours by genertions. He's effectively been immortalized by his books and by the live action adaptation of Powers. You will never have accomplished this much in your lifetime.

You have no business feeling sorry for Bendis. He doesn't even know you exist.
>>
>>82384772
what good is something that lasts longer than you can enjoy it?
>>
>>82384772
Guy better stop snacking so much while working or that legacy of his is going to take over much sooner than expected.
>>
>>82376676
I'm surprised more people don't call him Benis.
>>
>>82379045
"I'm an asshole" is usually the standard.
>>
>>82383666
Because Satan he is able to bring in writers like Ennis and Ellis, and has fostered good work out of writers like Robbie Thompson
And also it's Alonso/Brevoort's fault in the first place that book is fucked, they're the ones who give Bendis free reign
>>
DO SOMETHING WITH MILES YOU FAGGOT WHY IS HE SO BORING GIVE HIM A QUIRK I DON'T CARE IF YOU SHIP HIM WITH MS MARVEL BECAUSE THAT WON'T SAVE HIM I WANT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND I WANT IT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
