I watched this again recently and I wanted to talk about how much I love the fuck out of it mostly I want to amass a collection of fan art and webms

Despite the crummy story I just never get tired of watching it.

I always thought Song of the Sea was a bit more boring than Secret of Kells.
I hope they aren't trying to trod out some sort of formula ans will instead make a completely different movie in the future,
>>
>>82378973
I found Kells bit dull but I agree. Both movies are fantastic, I want them to step away from Irish folklore and try something radically different but I want same artstlye.
>>
I did not expect that the Vikings would actually kill half of the town before they left.

Also, the book having absolutely no effect on them was a nice touch.
>>
>>82376410
Its been a while since I saw this movie. It was and remains a uniquely special animation experience for.

>>82378421
I can't believe I haven't gotten around to watching that yet.

>>82379106
>I want them to step away from Irish folklore
What if they stuck to European folklore?
>>
>>82376410

Absolutely beautiful movie. If only the story was a little stronger, it could be one of the all time best.

Story: 7/10
Music: 9/10
Animation: 10/10

I'm a sucker for wolf stories, especially man vs nature stories where they stand in for nature.
>>
Is this the Irish Ghibli?
>>
>>82378973
The studio is heavily subsidized by the Irish state so there will always be pressure to make stuff based on Irish myths and history,
>>
>>82379131
Or rather the content was a book. Which then just turns out to be a just-so story about how the original Kells cover got lost.
>>
>>82379594
I like that. American cultures and famous mythos are all fine and interesting, but it's nice seeing stuff I would've otherwise never have known about.

>>82379594
Makes sense. Then I just hope they don't run out of ideas.
>>
>>82379517
More like the Irish, Fleischer Studios. They've lit a fire under the local film scene but they haven't had anything with the international impact of Spirited Away, I bet some other studio will use the hype that they've built up and become the next Hollywood darling with something more Disneyesque
>>
>>82379594
>The studio is heavily subsidized by the Irish state
Wow, that's news to me and I would've never guessed it.

How come Ireland's animation subsidies gives us The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea but Canadian subsidies gives us Johnny Test?
>>
>>82379652
Ireland, wants to get shit to Cannes so they can get foreign art money. Canada wants to get shit to Cartoon network so they can get syndication money.
>>
>>82379682
Interesting.

Any idea why each country chose there respective revenue stream? Is Canadian animation more connected to the US cartoon production scene while Ireland is more connected to the indie movie scene or something?
>>
>>82379617
>implying nature isn't evil
there's a theory on that. In European culture the cities, for centuries or maybe even millenia have been fucking deathtraps. They only ever grew because people kept migrating to them. Sickness, plague, poverty, other human beings being assholes, etc.

Nature had a status of being perfect in the catholic mindset, and provided escape from the squalor of the cities.

Meanwhile, in the USA, nature was wild and untamed, full of dangerous predators, unknown plants and animals, possibly spooky ghosts and hostile natives.
Cities provided safety and protection and strength in numbers.

Ive heard this theory come up when discussing horror and the different settings used in the USA and EU. Think Cabin in the Woods vs Jack the Ripper. One in the middle of nowhere, the other in the middle of the city.
>>
>>82379760
Bingo, you got it in one. Basically, Ireland was always a popular place to make B movies because of the Tax rates and cheap land. So there has been a kind of Gentrification of the existing scene over the last few years.

There's a good documentary about it called "It came from Connemara" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffho1E9VUL4

On the other hand European wilderness was just as dangerous if not even more so than the American one. Full of robbers too. Travelling through the woods (which most of Europe consisted of) meant to give yourself up to unpredictable forces. Most cities were not very big and provided protection from nature.
Meanwhile the wilderness that settlers found in America (at first) was already tamed and relatively benign.
>>
>>82379652
Canadian subsidies gave us a long history of Canadian animation. Mostly shorts which tended to dominate the Oscars.
>>
>>82380152
the wildersness had been relatively tamed since the middle ages, not to mention that most forests were managed by the people that lived near them. The early medieval days had a lot of issues with bandits, but later on in history the people made a point of making the roads safer.

The american wildlife was relatively wild, but more importantly it was unknown to the europeans. All kinds of dragons could be hiding behind those mountains. Remember the first settlers had a really hard time not starving to death.
Although cities were not huge relative to contemporary cities, they would still count hundreds of thousands of people, if not over a million in the big ones. But they had big walls which provided protection but also caused squallor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVPUFMwm73Y
>>
>>82380209
I guess that depends about which period one talks and which parts of Europe. By the time of colonisation Europe definitely was mostly tamed and cultivated.
However romantisation of nature only really started with the first beginnings of industrialisation at the beginning of the 19th century which was also the time for example in which most fairy tales got written down.
>>
>>82380259
no way, the catholic view on nature was that it was made of god, and sort of god's domain on earth. they believed it was in perfect balance and harmony, unlike the world of man that was chaotic and full of conflict. That's one of the main reasons the theory of evolution was opposed.

The romantic period romanticized nature as a means of escaping industrial life.

Song of the Sea was pretty rad, why do people think it was worse than Kells? The modern setting? I loved all the parallel characters and thought the visuals and plot were stronger.

I couldnt tell you that, but it would've been the monks and the people educated by the monks making the literature, which in turn likely shaped the opinions of the populace.

Lovely movie. My only critique is that I wish they had focused a little more on the dynamic between Brendan and Aisling. Was a bit disappointed that she just kind of disappeared after the showdown with Crom.
>>
>>82383294
It's a matter of tastes. I love SotS way more for having much clearer visuals compared to Kells often overly abstract old drawing style, and I liked the much stronger focus on the characters themselves, but lots of people think they removed what made them unique doing that.
>>
>>
>>82376410
So the lesson is not to prepare for anything because it's fucking pointless. I don't like that.

>>
>>82383785
Or, you know, preserving knowledge and/or culture for later generations.
>>
>>82383294
I don't know about others, and I'm not sure how to properly put it, but Song of The Sea felt more... scattered in its focus? Yea it had the central plot of Ben looking out for his sister, but all the mythology and folklore gets introduced, then cast aside in almost the same instance, which sort of lessens the impact of the story some in my opinion. It's still an enjoyable film, no doubt about that. But that's how I felt.
>>
>>82384087
By having one old man running away and letting hundreds die? That's what he was advocating. Just forget about the peasants and run because preparation is stupid.

Those fuckers hoarded knowledge. While working over the population to keep it dumb and docile on the peasant's coin and sweat. It's the rise of the merchant class, the rise of powerful rich cities, and the creation of the non-noble middle class that finally brought knowledge and education to the masses. Church a shit. The only instances when it educated someone was either to make them clergy or for large amounts of money.
>>
>>82383294
I just didn't feel there to be much urgency to be behind the story. It took a long time to get rolling.
I don't think it sucked though.

>>82383771
While I totally loved the more abstract style of Kells it just wouldn't have fit into Song of the Sea. It was a style that very much fit to the movie's setting and story and would have been wrong elsewhere.

The message of this movie confuses me somewhat. It seemed like a story about Christianity dealing with Norse invaders then it turned to "Our Paganism > Their Paganism"

>>82394724
I think the point was more like, Goodness is god, regardless of faith. As you said, the Vikings lust for gold was actually a religious thing and Ashling is a pagan deity but these are just lenses to look at god, or humanity, spirituality, whatever you want to call it.
>>
>>82394695
Well we don't like people bigger than us.
Humanity, if we can't kill it, trap it or tame it, we'll outbreed it that's for damn sure.

The Norse had the right idea. "We'll all die someday in blood and fire, and then someone else will take up the mantle."

Bloody hell though after watching Song of the Sea first I expected this to be equally comfy, my body wasn't at all prepared to see innocents murdered and the Abbott almost killed. Movie should come with a damn warning message
Also kind of a shame they didn't go back to Aisling after Brendan grew up. Her role in the movie is far smaller than I thought it would be. She was cute though.

I'd actually would like a film where the fey manage to eradicate the human plague and the world remains full of magic.
>>
So is it just me or is there something inherently funny with Abbot's voice? Everyone's voice acting has a accent yet Abbot sounds like this really bored average guy and for some reason every time he talked me and my cousin would have a stupid laughing fit the first time we saw this movie.

I mean it's not just me right?

But yeah, 10/10 film it was great.
>>
>>82396580

I think I read a story like that once, a "hero" goes on an epic journey to slay a huge monster but as the monster dies the land dies around it and the man realizes that the beast's magic was actually keeping the land fertile and green as a source of magic, despite the occasional person it ate. So now the villagers have to work twice as hard to keep the land or get fucked.
Of course the villagers all chalk it up to the monster's curse and the hero suffers no drawbacks.

If it does, it's usually about men failing at a harmless stage in their history, without ever having made anything of themselves and hardly deserving of scorn. More a "snuffed out before they could reach their prime" sort of deal.

Even magical beings teaming up against a human empire is not exactly the type of banal thing that I would find entertaining.

What I would like to see is the fey just turning men around and sending them back where they came from with "We'll have none of that!". Even a comedic account perhaps. Thwarting of attempts to form kingdoms or developing technology.

I so hate when the elves are portrayed as haughty or impotent faggots who don't give a shit about anything outside their forest before it's too late and men are spreading across the land like cancer eradicating all other intelligent and not very so life.

Interesting to see you use the spelling 'fey' as I have always seen/used 'fae' as in 'fae folk' (and sometimes I've seen 'fay'). Both are technically correct according to reference sites but 'fey' usually first definition is damned or fated to die, with faerie folk being second or third.

May I ask from which portion of the world you hail from? I've seen 'fey' only in the Germanic mythos and language.

>Meanwhile, in the USA, nature was wild and untamed, full of dangerous predators, unknown plants and animals, possibly spooky ghosts and hostile natives.
>Cities provided safety and protection and strength in numbers.
Except for the fact that to the highly religious folks of the 1800's, the cities of the east were the places of the devil with black smoke and liquor everywhere.

California was initially settled by folks who believed unspoiled nature was the last refuge of God in man's world. As the Gold Rush folk settled in, the railroads took over and the lands were logged clear, those folks moved north to Oregon and Washington.

The very first national parks for preservation (as opposed to those maintained for hunting or that were trimmed as giant gardens) were in fact created within the United States by those folks specifically as places where mankind can commune with the spirit of God and Jesus Christ in nature.
As a result, being basically a religious hippie is in the very soul of the peoples of the American west coastlands.

That's part of what was so ridiculous about those white trash terrorists that took over the Oregon wildlife buildings. Those lands were set aside to never be ranched on, hunted in, or developed before Oregon was even a state. For them to claim that somehow the government is keeping the lands from the people was a joke, considering none of them were even from there in the first place.
>>
>>82406535
Those guys were mostly upset about double-jeopardy in the case of those two ranchers who let their controlled burn get out of control, and also "restrictive" policies regarding the private use of federal lands that are specifically intended for grazing and other economic activity.

If the court had just sentenced them to a fine or community service or whatever instead of several more years in prison, the whole fiasco would not have happened.

Instead, more peoples' lives were ruined, one guy died for being a jumpy idiot, and federalists/Democrats/anti-guns everywhere were provided with a fresh new strawman in spite of the occupiers never firing a single shot.

And were they really terrorists for staging an armed protest? They weren't actively seeking to instill terror in anyone, they just felt like their complaints were being ignored and that this stunt would get them attention. If they had occupied the buildings unarmed, the FBI would have just swept right in and carted them away that night, and there may have been one or two news stories about it.

But instead of actively negotiating with them, the authorities basically just told them to surrender and accept jail time while letting them live there for weeks out of fear of a shooting battle before engaging in a military-style siege anyway.

The kind of escalation that we saw from both sides was entirely unnecessary, and both sides handled their operations very poorly from start to finish.

Anyway, this is too /pol/ for my taste.

Oh god that would be hilarious. But no. I'm a yuropoor so the chances of you seeing my work is pretty nonexistent.
One of them was for a museum in my country doing an exhibition about Roman gladiators. We were given pictures of roman graffiti and we basically had to make those drawings 'come to life'. Then they were projected on the walls. Very awesome first job since I actually studied Latin in school before moving to animation. Pic related, one of the graffiti we were given and I animated.
The other is a cute short film that'll probably be finished by June. I did a little bit animation, but mostly cleanup/coloring.
