For some reason, an old-ass PS2 game could emulate a webline (literally the simplest fucking stretched polygon) connecting to a building.

Yet every other game since needed to go back to Spider-Man: the movie game mechanics where it connects to the sky.

The fuck? How lazy can these developers be? Okay, you can give me a shitzillion skins, but not a web that connects to a building? What is this, the year 2000?

Maybe if we are really lucky the eventual tie in game for homecoming will have swinging like spiderman 2

>>
>>82374451

Go back and replay it. The game is ass, but fun. The graphics sucked for the time, the combat was too finicky, the story was nonexistant, dear God the voice acting was awful besides Bruce Campbell, the only thing "great" about it was the swinging, which looking back on it, wasnt really anything special. Groundbreaking, yes, but just a physics simulator at that. Try going back and replaying it, it gets old fast. Spidey isn't even animated well, he just did the same exact pose every time you swing.

Compare it to USM or TASM2, which both have superior graphics, gameplay, story, acting, animating, and swinging, and it's nothing special any more.

Best spiderman game for sure with OPs pic close second. The only two games that gave you dat spiderman feeling imo
>>
>>82376602
I need to pick that game up again
>>
>>82374545

It has to do with gameplay over physics. Let's compare the other games that have the web actually stick to the buildings:

Ultimate Spider-Man: Yes
Spider-Man 3: Yes
Web of Shadows: Yes, with a small gap.
The Amazing Spider-Man: No
The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Yes

That's only one other free roaming Spidey game that doesn't have pendulum based mechanics. SM2 had a lot more weight to it, so you could travel faster, and the webs always connected directly to an object, which meant sometimes Spidey would be at a really weird angle visually.

The other games actually corrected this issue by having the webs come "close enough" to the surface to allow for maximum stability and control. WOS' swinging looks and feels the best, because Spideys webs have the slightest gap between the web and the surface to make sure he can swing completely vertically if he needs to, which is insanely useful for navigation and the combat the game has. Function over form.

>>
>>82376602

Eh, this one was fun but has no real replay value. There was no atmosphere to it either. Just environment after environment. Also, holy shit did the combat bother me. Didn't feel like Wolverine at all. Why the flying fuck does Logan have a ground-pound attack to all his combo finishers. And also the grapples where he punches people across the room. And also environmental kills like taking the pilot out of a flying chopper and holding his head into the blades? What the fuck lol. Doesnt feel like Wolverine at all. Also, his ability to jump hundreds of feet from a standing position. Also, there's zero difference between bone claws and metal claws gameplay wise, which is a huge mistake.

>>82374800

This anon gets it, this is the best Wolverine game, and probably the third best /co/ game.

Marvel doesn't make or license their stuff out for triple a games anymore. Focused on free to play and mobile now, outside of that Telltale game I think.
>>
>>82374922

Most licensed games usually put no effort because companies gives the devs as little budget and time as possible so they can sell all of their merchandise in bulk to promote their movies or televised series at the height of their popularity. If a licensed game is somehow decent, then sadly it is purely an accident.

>>
>>82374922
SM2 was an interesting case. A guy at Activision created the swinging system in his own free time, and they decided to use it for the game.

Other studios would have to re-make the code from the ground up, and that's too much for a licensed game.

Everyone jerks themselves silly over the swing mechanics in SM2 but also seem to ignore that every other aspect of that game is awful. The graphics were bad (even for the era), the combat was some of the worst I've ever played, the difficulty was all over the place, navigating interiors was next to impossible... Take away the swinging and it would probably be considered one of the worst /co/ games of all time.

Ultimate Spider-Man is superior in every regard except for the swing mechanics, which are good but not quite great.

That said, Arkham City is GOAT /co/ game to date. Yes, it's better than Asylum, come at me.
>>
>>82381854
>Yes, it's better than Asylum, come at me.
No, you're right.
>>
I have always wanted a game set in the Evolve or Die story.

The tutorial would be spidey fighting Morlun (and getting his ass kicked) while getting a massive power boost.
You would then unlock abilities by using them.

Love swinging since that is all you are doing? Well your swinging speed/acrobatics will be through the roof.

Punch every badguy you can see? You get tons of combos and improved strength (So now you can lift a car even faster)

Maybe you are training your spider sense. I don't know how but you might be able to do it. After this you would be in that "bullet time" even longer, have a longer time to push the dodge button etc, highlight boss weak points etc.
>>
>>82381838
I was so hype when Mysterio got like 5 lifebars in SM2. I was ready for an awesome battle with illusions and mindfucks.
>>
How about a game that takes part from the animated show? We could have Peter battling Morbius and getting a secondary Man-Spider form which you could switch between like in WoS

Hell.. just a WoS sequel would be good. I want to know what happened to spidey as he tried to overtake the world with symbiot-Cat and battling symbiot-Wolverine

I loved SM2 and I played many hours on it but you're right, it had major flaws.

Honestly I hated having to do the stupid repetitive civilian mission where you fight some shitty goons. The combat was so clunky at times.

My favorite of the spontaneous civilian missions was probably getting the balloon for the kids. They surprisingly challenging if you didn't happen to be in the area right when the balloon leaves the ground. That and trying to catch Black Cat and racing to different locations because you got to make use of the excellent swing mechanics.

>>
>>82379794
I just played SM2 for the first time recently, actually, and I disagree. Well, I mostly agree with your points, but I wouldn't say USM is better. USM's swinging tried to be more accessible but in doing so felt like it had a lot less momentum to it. SM2's swinging had a small learning curve but it was so much more rewarding than USM's watered down swinging. USM and SM2 both had bland, uninspired combat.
>>
>>82383993
Just thinking the same thing. I would kill for Marvel to port all their PS2 era games to Steam. As it is now we have to emulate or jury-rig old pirated copies of these games to get them to work on modern PCs and even then that doesn't work for Spider-Man 2 which had a weird bullshit version of the game made for computers.

I preferred Knight... Even the Batmobile sections. Except the Cobra battles.

I certainly REMEMBER hating the combat less. Like, it's been years, but I recall bouncing from enemy to enemy in Ult Spider-Man, never letting them get hits in simply because I Didn't get pinned down. Compare that to Spider-Man 2's "Oh he blocked. Oh, he dodged my web. Oh, the dodge button didn't work in time so I got wanged with a wrench and ate asphalt for a good three seconds".

Ultimate did get frustratingly difficult at times, though.

I recall the Electro segment with Venom taking me about a week to beat.

As much as it doesn't have the benefits of nostalgia on its side, I'd say Arkham Asylum was pretty damn good

Some of the old Disney games were great, like the racing one.

This will be controversial but me and my Dad played the hell out of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game. It was essentially just a tweaked version of the Force Unleashed but the Sentinels really had a great feel to them.

This goes without saying
>>82376497
I emulated it recently and it's still a helluva fun game to play with some of the best voice acting

>Arkh
At least with comic book characters, it'd make a lot more sense to contract studios out and have them just make the game in their own time. That's what helped the Arkham series, it wasn't tied to anything, they just set up their own continuity and style, without having to fit any schedule or promotional material or anything. And now it sells like crazy.

The same shit worked with Disney and KH, with Capcom and MVC, and Walking Dead from Telltale. (forget about the problems with the series, you have to at least admit that they're much higher quality than most licensed games).

They all sold well too because they weren't rushed and made a passable game, rather than something just thrown together.

I don't get why DC and Marvel don't just follow suit. contract out some studio that has decent quality games already and let them run free.

I've only played SM2 and USM. How are the rest of the Spider-Man games? Do any of them at least have the fun exploring around the city feel to them that SM2 had?
>>
>>82395315
They only seem to bother doing that now with TT for the Lego games since they're all fairly similar and I assume easy to pump out without a super high budget. But even then Marvel managed to fuck that up with Lego Avengers being far inferior to the first Lego Marvel by focusing entirely on the movies and leaving out Spidey, X-Men, F4 and many others.
>>
>>82395397
The two Spider-Man games on the PS1 are linear level-to-level games but are both really fun and full of fanservice. The first Spidey movie game is great and definitely worth playing but 3 is a huge piece of shit. Web of Shadows is another open world game and has really fun combat but suffers from being an early game in the PS360 generation and it also has terrible voice acting. Friend or Foe is fine for a kids game but is easily forgotten. Shattered Dimensions is another linear level based game but it's easily the best most recent Spider-Man game with a lot of fun and varied gameplay and a ton of comic references. It's follow up Edge of Time is far inferior and the two two ASM movie games are mediocre imitations of the old movie games that aren't really worth playing. If all you're looking for is New York exploration then the two you listed are still your best bets but in terms of just plain old good Spider-Man games there are a good amount to choose from.

The biggest slap in the face was Slade. Like jesus...you take a pretty awesome battle from Origins, and then you do THAT to him, like..wtf were they even thinking?

Also forgot to mention, while not exclusively focused on Spider-Man Lego Marvel Superheroes is also really good and let's you explore all over Lego New York with tons of Marvel comics landmarks. Skip the sequel Lego Avengers though, it's not great and doesn't have Spidey at all.

To each his own.

I only remember the boss battles from Asylum and basically nothing else. I remember a great deal of City, both bosses and exploration.

All that said I suppose it's just contrasting gameplay styles. Asylum is more of a "Metroidvania" style experience while City feels much more like a Zelda game. I personally much prefer basically any Zelda game over every Metroid game, except Prime.

It's based entirely around the MCU which really limited what they could do. The game has levels from Cap 1 & 2, Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Avengers 1 & 2 and most of them feel stretched incredibly thin which is a problem a few Lego games have. The cutscenes use movie dialogue but for some reason a lot of it sounds like really poor quality recordings of the lines, plus the DLC levels and a few of the side story levels don't have proper cutscenes, just slideshows with narration.

The New York hub is just reused from the first game with less to do, and the new hubs are all so small and mostly lifeless so they feel pointless. But the main problem is the characters. Aside from characters who appeared in the films used the rest of the cast is made up of either new stuff Marvel is currently pushing (Whor, Cap Falcon, Kamala, Hellcat, etc.) or Z-listers, which would be fine if we got major characters along with them but we don't. Because of the MCU focus we did not get any characters from Spidey, X-Men, F4, Ghost Rider, Punisher and more, and in some cases we got only the bare minimum (GotG only got Ronan, Collector and Nebula, Netflix shows only got the lead characters with no story, etc.).

Basically coming off of Lego Marvel which was a fanservice smorgasbord it feels like a huge step down that exists to help push the MCU branding rather than to give fans what they want. It was a major disappointment and if they do another I hope the don't make the same mistake again.

The trifecta of perfect /co/ related vidya is Spider-Man 2, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and Batman Arkham City.

These three games succeed in the most important area that is, making you FEEL like you are the character you're playing as.

No you deluded fuck. Even if AA was a tighter experience all together. City had better Boss Battles and a much fun to explore Open World. Like holy shit, everything about AA was great (Outside the boss battles) but nothing from Arkham City was as terrible as Hulked Out Joker.
