The tragedy is implicit, though. All of his allies are dead, he's essentially totally alone because he was forced to kill his council and he's forever separated from his One True Love. The best ending that's possible for Holland is the one that Soule gave to him: acceptance.
There's just something beautiful about a heroic monster sitting in the lotus position, and accepting his place in the world. To no longer struggle, and to attempt to gain enlightenment.
