I think it shows just how good a grasp modern-Disney has on character-focused storytelling. They're able to take a concept that may seem shallow or tired and turn it into something compelling through simple, relateable emotional drama.
They don't reinvent the wheel with plots or events or settings because they don't need to. They realize all you need is to grab a cute bunny and a smug motherfucking fox and just hit your basic goddamn story beats exactly when you need to hit them.

I was cautiously optimistic. I wanted Disney to make a really good animal movie again, but I was worried that it would end up being some Ice Age-tier thing with too many puns and edgy jokes. I'd argue that they actually poured a lot of thought into the setting and world-design: Zootopia succeeded with me because it not only provided compelling character dynamics and personalities which played off each other, but also because the setting could additionally support character interactions or make for a compelling realm to let the audience's imagination inhabit that space.
For example, Byron and Rich explained the logic behind not including cats, dogs, etc, which to me spoke of a more carefully designed world that plays out pretty well in the film.
Also the film pretty much won me over with the preview of the DMV.

Oh no doubt. They have a very passionate and talented team right now. But I meant more on the conceptual level. Think about Wreck-It-Ralph. Sounds dumb as hell, right? Bunch of video game characters running around together? From any other studio, that would have been full of schlocky jokes and references and the plot would never really go anywhere. Hell, let's be honest... it would have been Pixels.
But Disney took that basic concept and developed THE FUCK out of it, with a strong character story at its core. Same with Zootopia. Shows you can make almost any idea work with enough time and passion.

Even as a kid I remember being kind of disappointed that it didn't look much like Simba's character model in the movie. Oh please. Nick's entire monologue in this scene is pointing out that it takes very little to reveal someone's prejudices.
After all they'd been through, it still only took a wrinkled nose and a snarl, *in the middle of a monologue about how easily predators are presumed dangerous* to get Judy's heart racing and put her in fight-or-flight mode. Yes, Judy was professional in the way she moved to defend herself, but she still proved Nick's point 100%.
The fact that she sincerely thought Nick might attack her just showed how deeply prejudiced and easily frightened by predators Judy was in this scene.
Nothing wrong with moving to defend yourself, but Judy's reaction here was textbook prejudice in every sense of the word.
